Synthesis of highly spherical Ziegler–Natta catalyst by employing Span 80 as an emulsifier suitable for UHMWPE production

Improving Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance of High-Density Polyethylene Grades by Comonomer Addition and Nanocomposite Approach

The aim of this paper is to determine the effect of polymer density, correlated to the comonomer content, and nanosilica addition on the mechanical and Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance (ESCR) characteristics of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). In this regard, five HDPE samples with similar Melt Flow Index (MFI) and molar mass but various densities were acquired from a petrochemical plant. Two polymerization reactors work in series and differ only in the amount of 1-buene comonomer fed to the second reactor. To ascertain the microstructure of the studied samples, GPC and SSA (successive self-nucleation and annealing) analyses were accomplished. All samples resulted having similar characteristics but slightly various SCB/1000 C=7.26-9.74 (SCB=Short Chain Branching). Consequently, meanwhile studied HDPEs reveal similar notched impact and stress at yield values, the tensile modulus, stress-at-break, and elongation-at-break tend to demonstrate different results with the SCB content. More significantly, ESCR characteristic varied considerably with SCB/1000 C extent, so that higher amount of SCB acknowledged advanced ESCR. Notably, blending HDPE sample containing higher amount of SCB/1000 C, with 3 wt.% of chemically modified nanosilica enhanced ESCR characteristic by 40 %. DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations unveiled the role of the comonomer, quantitatively by binding energies and qualitatively by Non Covalent Interaction (NCI) plots.

Influence of the Ethanol Content of Adduct on the Comonomer Incorporation of Related Ziegler-Natta Catalysts in Propylene (Co)polymerizations

The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the ethanol content of adducts on the catalytic behavior of related Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalysts in propylene homo- and copolymerizations (with 1-hexene comonomer) in terms of activity, isotacticity, H2 response, and comonomer incorporation. For this purpose, three MgCl2.nEtOH adducts with n values of 0.7, 1.2, and 2.8 were synthesized and used in the synthesis of related ZN catalysts. The catalysts were thoroughly characterized using XRD, BET, SEM, EDX, N2 adsorption-desorption, and DFT techniques. Additionally, the microstructure of the synthesized (co)polymers was distinguished via DSC, SSA, and TREF techniques. Their activity was found to enhance with the adduct's ethanol content in both homo- and copolymerization experiments, and the increase was more pronounced in homopolymerization reactions in the absence of H2. Furthermore, the catalyst with the highest ethanol content provided a copolymer with a lower isotacticity index, a shorter meso sequence length, and a more uniform distribution of comonomer within the chains. These results were attributed to the higher total surface area and Ti content of the corresponding catalyst, as well as its lower average pore diameter, a larger proportion of large pores compared to the other two catalysts, and its spherical open bud morphology. It affirms the importance of catalyst/support ethanol-content control during the preparation process. Then, molecular simulation was employed to shed light on the iso-specificity of the polypropylene produced via synthesized catalysts.

Engineering Polymer-Based Porous Membrane for Sustainable Lithium-Ion Battery Separators

Due to the growing demand for eco-friendly products, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have gained widespread attention as an energy storage solution. With the global demand for clean and sustainable energy, the social, economic, and environmental significance of LIBs is becoming more widely recognized. LIBs are composed of cathode and anode electrodes, electrolytes, and separators. Notably, the separator, a pivotal and indispensable component in LIBs that primarily consists of a porous membrane material, warrants significant research attention. Researchers have thus endeavored to develop innovative systems that enhance separator performance, fortify security measures, and address prevailing limitations. Herein, this review aims to furnish researchers with comprehensive content on battery separator membranes, encompassing performance requirements, functional parameters, manufacturing protocols, scientific progress, and overall performance evaluations. Specifically, it investigates the latest breakthroughs in porous membrane design, fabrication, modification, and optimization that employ various commonly used or emerging polymeric materials. Furthermore, the article offers insights into the future trajectory of polymer-based composite membranes for LIB applications and prospective challenges awaiting scientific exploration. The robust and durable membranes developed have shown superior efficacy across diverse applications. Consequently, these proposed concepts pave the way for a circular economy that curtails waste materials, lowers process costs, and mitigates the environmental footprint.

A Novel Method for Dynamic Molecular Weight Distribution Determination in Organometallic Catalyzed Olefin Polymerizations

In this study, a mathematical model for the time evolution of molecular weight distribution (MWD) was developed. This temporal model is based on the well-known Ziegler–Natta polymerization mechanism and reaction kinetics by the parametric solving of related differential equations. However, due to the generality of the reactions involved, the model can be extended to the other type of catalysts, such as metallocenes, Phillips, etc. The superiority of this model lies in providing the possibility of a more precise prediction over the active sites and kinetic parameters using a simple mathematical equation, which leads to improved reactor design in large-scale production. The model uses a function to develop a methodology for MWD calculations. In this way, the transient response is limited to the first few minutes of the reaction; however, it is important as it demonstrates the establishment of the final MWD. According to the results, almost for practical conditions with negligible transfer resistances, the time dependency of the MWD has a transient interval, depending on the kinetic constants of polymerization reactions. Increasing the time to infinity results in an increase in MW and a widening in MWD, which confirms the experimental plots well. In short, the main advantage of our proposed model over the previous ones is its ability to predict the MWD even before the completion of the polymerization reaction. The results of the present model match well with those of the well-known Schulz–Flory distribution, which only predicts the final molecular weight distribution, thus confirming that the model is reliable and generalizable.
