Abstract
PURPOSE To explore potential feasibility of texture features in magnetic susceptibility and R2* maps for evaluating liver fibrosis. METHODS Thirty-one patients (median age 46 years; 22 male) with chronic liver disease were prospectively recruited and underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), blood tests, and liver biopsy. Susceptibility and R2* maps were obtained using a 3-dimensional volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination sequence with a 3T MRI scanner. Texture features, including histogram, gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), gray-level dependence matrix (GLDM), gray-level run length matrix (GLRLM), gray-level size zone matrix (GLSZM), and neighboring gray tone difference matrix (NGTDM) features, were extracted. Texture features and blood test results of non-significant (Ishak-F < 3) and significant fibrosis patients (Ishak-F ≥ 3) were compared, and correlations with Ishak-F stages were analyzed. Areas under the curve (AUCs) were calculated to determine the efficacy for evaluating liver fibrosis. RESULTS Nine texture features of susceptibility maps and 19 features of R2* maps were significantly different between non-significant and significant fibrosis groups (all P < 0.05). Large dependence high gray-level emphasis (LDHGLE) of GLDM and long run high gray-level emphasis (LRHGLE) of GLRLM in R2* maps showed significantly negative and good correlations with Ishak-F stages (r = -0.616, P < 0.001; r = -0.637, P < 0.001). Busyness (NGTDM) in susceptibility maps, LDHGLE of GLDM and LRHGLE of GLRLM in R2* maps yield the highest AUCs (AUC = 0.786, P = 0.007; AUC = 0.807, P = 0.004; AUC = 0.819, P = 0.003). CONCLUSION Texture characteristics of susceptibility and R2* maps revealed possible staging values for liver fibrosis. Susceptibility and R2*-based texture analysis may be a useful and noninvasive method for staging liver fibrosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Noninvasive assessment of significant liver fibrosis in rabbits by spectral CT parameters and texture analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-three rabbits were randomly divided into 27 carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis group and 6 control group. Spectral CT contrast-enhanced scan was performed in batches, and the liver fibrosis was staged according to the histopathological results. The portal venous phase spectral CT parameters [70 keV CT value, normalized iodine concentration (NIC), spectral HU curve slope (λHU)] were measured, and MaZda texture analysis was performed on 70 keV monochrome images. Three dimensionality reduction methods and four statistical methods in B11 module were used to perform discriminant analysis and calculate misclassified rate (MCR), and ten texture features under the lowest combination of MCR were statistically analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to calculate the diagnostic performance of spectral parameters and texture features for significant liver fibrosis. Finally, the binary logistic regression was used to further screen independent predictors and establish model. RESULTS A total of 23 experimental rabbits and 6 control rabbits were included, of which 16 had significant liver fibrosis. Three spectral CT parameters with significant liver fibrosis were significantly lower than those of non-significant liver fibrosis (p < 0.05), and the AUC ranged from 0.846 to 0.913. The combination analysis of mutual information (MI) and nonlinear discriminant analysis (NDA) had the lowest MCR, which with 0%. In the filtered texture features, four were statistically significant and AUC > 0.5, ranges from 0.764 to 0.875. The logistic regression model showed that Perc.90% and NIC could be used as independent predictors, the overall prediction accuracy of the model was 89.7% and the AUC was 0.976. CONCLUSION Spectral CT parameters and texture features have high diagnostic value for predicting significant liver fibrosis in rabbits, and the combination of the two can improve its diagnostic efficiency.

Abstract
Given the central role of interstitial fibrosis in disease progression in chronic kidney disease (CKD), a role for diffusion-weighted MRI has been pursued. We evaluated the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of using radiomic features to phenotype apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps and hence to the clinical classification(s) of the participants. The study involved 40 individuals (10 healthy and 30 with CKD (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2)). Machine learning methods, such as hierarchical clustering and logistic regression, were used. Clustering resulted in the identification of two clusters, one including all individuals with CKD (n = 17), while the second one included all the healthy volunteers (n = 10) and the remaining individuals with CKD (n = 13), resulting in 100% specificity. Logistic regression identified five radiomic features to classify participants as with CKD vs. healthy volunteers, with a sensitivity and specificity of 93% and 70%, respectively, and an AUC of 0.95. Similarly, four radiomic features were able to classify participants as rapid vs. non-rapid CKD progressors among the 30 individuals with CKD, with a sensitivity and specificity of 71% and 43%, respectively, and an AUC of 0.75. These promising preliminary data should support future studies with larger numbers of participants with varied disease severity and etiologies to improve performance.

Abstract
Background Three‐dimensional variable flip angle (VFA) methods are commonly used for T1 mapping of the liver, but there is no data on the accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of this technique in this organ in a multivendor setting. Purpose To measure bias, repeatability, and reproducibility of VFA T1 mapping in the liver. Study Type Prospective observational. Population Eight healthy volunteers, four women, with no known liver disease. Field Strength/Sequence 1.5‐T and 3.0‐T; three‐dimensional steady‐state spoiled gradient echo with VFAs; Look‐Locker. Assessment Traveling volunteers were scanned twice each (30 minutes to 3 months apart) on six MRI scanners from three vendors (GE Healthcare, Philips Medical Systems, and Siemens Healthineers) at two field strengths. The maximum period between the first and last scans among all volunteers was 9 months. Volunteers were instructed to abstain from alcohol intake for at least 72 hours prior to each scan and avoid high cholesterol foods on the day of the scan. Statistical Tests Repeated measures ANOVA, Student t‐test, Levene's test of variances, and 95% significance level. The percent error relative to literature liver T1 in healthy volunteers was used to assess bias. The relative error (RE) due to intrascanner and interscanner variation in T1 measurements was used to assess repeatability and reproducibility. Results The 95% confidence interval (CI) on the mean bias and mean repeatability RE of VFA T1 in the healthy liver was 34 ± 6% and 10 ± 3%, respectively. The 95% CI on the mean reproducibility RE at 1.5 T and 3.0 T was 29 ± 7% and 25 ± 4%, respectively. Data Conclusion Bias, repeatability, and reproducibility of VFA T1 mapping in the liver in a multivendor setting are similar to those reported for breast, prostate, and brain. Abstract
Purpose To explore the value of texture analysis (TA) based on dynamic contrast-enhanced MR (DCE-MR) images in the differential diagnosis of benign phyllode tumors (BPTs) and borderline/malignant phyllode tumors (BMPTs). Methods A total of 47 patients with histologically proven phyllode tumors (PTs) from November 2012 to March 2020, including 26 benign BPTs and 21 BMPTs, were enrolled in this retrospective study. The whole-tumor texture features based on DCE-MR images were calculated, and conventional imaging findings were evaluated according to the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS). The differences in the texture features and imaging findings between BPTs and BMPTs were compared; the variates with statistical significance were entered into logistic regression analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess the diagnostic performance of models from image-based analysis, TA, and the combination of these two approaches. Results Regarding texture features, three features of the histogram, two features of the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), and three features of the run-length matrix (RLM) showed significant differences between the two groups (all p < 0.05). Regarding imaging findings, however, only cystic wall morphology showed significant differences between the two groups (p = 0.014). The areas under the ROC curve (AUCs) of image-based analysis, TA, and the combination of these two approaches were 0.687 (95% CI, 0.518–0.825, p = 0.014), 0.886 (95% CI, 0.760–0.960, p < 0.0001), and 0.894 (95% CI, 0.754–0.970, p < 0.0001), respectively. Conclusion TA based on DCE-MR images has potential in differentiating BPTs and BMPTs.

Abstract
Reflecting the growing interest in early diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in recent years, the development of noninvasive and reliable fat quantification methods is required. Fat quantification by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), especially MRI-derived proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) obtained by quantitative chemical shift imaging such as the multi-point Dixon method, is highly correlated with histological evaluation and fat quantification with MR spectroscopy (MRS). In recent years, MRI-PDFF has been increasingly used as a reference standard for image-based fat quantification instead of MRS because it is possible to evaluate the whole liver with a single breath-hold. Furthermore, recent advances in MR imaging have led to the application of multiparametric MRI for the diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease with specific liver tissue quantification of fat, iron, and fibrosis. One of the advantages of multiparametric MRI is that whole organ imaging to exclude sampling variability and organ-specific tissue quantification can be done simultaneously. Therefore, multiparametric MRI methods offer an attractive option for noninvasive and comprehensive liver assessment beyond the quantitative assessment of liver steatosis. In this review article, we mainly focus on a technical explanation and clinical interpretation of MRI-PDFF in the quantitative assessment of liver steatosis. Furthermore, we would like to mention future perspectives of MR imaging of the liver in relation to elastography and other specific multiparametric MRI methods such as R2* and T1 mapping.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To quantitatively assess hypoattenuation volume ratio and hepatic parenchymal hypoattenuation on contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) in patients with pyrrolizidines alkaloids (PAs)-induced hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (HSOS), and evaluate the correlations of the CT-based quantitative values with clinical factors. METHODS Thirty-five patients with PAs-induced HSOS who underwent CECT were retrospectively enrolled. The ratio of hypoattenuation volume to total liver volume, and changes in damaged area-to-normal liver density ratio (ΔDR) derived from histogram on portal venous phase were quantitatively measured. Heterogeneous hypoattenuation (CT score) scored by hypoattenuation volume ratio and ΔDR were calculated. The correlation between imaging findings and clinical factors was analyzed using Pearson correlation test. RESULTS Liver function tests were abnormal in most patients, the mean Hounsfield unit (HU) of damaged area (58.68 ± 17.3) was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than the corresponding normal liver (82.27 ± 23.97). Heterogeneous hypoattenuation were mild in 13 patients (37 %), moderate in 16 patients (46 %), and severe in 6 patients (17 %). ΔDR derived from histogram was positively correlated (weakly to moderately) with total bilirubin (r = 0.341, P = 0.045), direct bilirubin (r = 0.385, P = 0.022), and alkaline phosphatase (r = 0.491, P = 0.003), while such correlation was not observed in hypoattenuation volume ratio. The severity of heterogeneous hypoattenuation scored by hypoattenuation volume ratio and ΔDR was positively correlated (weakly) with prothrombin time (r = 0.357, P = 0.035), international normalized ratio (r = 0.363, P = 0.032), alkaline phosphatase (r = 0.359, P = 0.034), and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score (r = 0.347, P = 0.041). CONCLUSION Heterogeneous hypoattenuation scored by volume ratio and ΔDR on CECT provides a non-invasive approach in evaluating the severity of PAs-induced HSOS.
