Uterine arteriovenous vascular malformations (UAVM) are uncommon vascular diseases, occurring during reproductive age. Patients affected by UAMVs usually present with recurrent pregnancy loss or menorrhagia. Initial evaluation of UAVMs is made with ultrasonography (US) and US-Doppler. Magnetic resonance is used when a UAMV is suspected at US. Treatment can be surgical (hysterectomy or surgical removal of AVM), or with selective uterine arterial embolization. We report a case of UAMV, from its clinical signs to diagnostic confirmation and subsequent treatment.

Vascular malformations involving the female pelvis

Vascular malformations (VM) are classified by flow characteristics and channel content. They can involve any organ and tissue plane, and occur in focal and diffuse forms. Slow-flow vascular malformations (venous and lymphatic malformations) are typically treated by sclerotherapy, whereas fast-flow lesions (arteriovenous malformations) are managed with embolizations. Some VMs, such as VMs of the rectum or uterus, are best dealt with surgically. This review will present a summary of the conditions, their imaging features, and some useful endovascular therapeutic techniques.

Novel technique for evaluating complex pelvic arteriovenous malformations with catheter-directed subtracted MR angiography

Residual or recurrent arteriovenous malformation (AVM) nidal filling is not uncommon after embolization of complex peripheral AVMs. The major reason for this is incomplete embolization of the nidus owing to failure to detect all feeder vessels other than the dominant one. Herein, the authors describe a novel "intravenous minus intraarterial" subtraction magnetic resonance (MR) angiography technique that enabled the delineation of additional feeding branches not clearly identifiable at intravenous contrast-enhanced MR angiography or nonselective pelvic angiography. This technique may be particularly useful in the evaluation of complex AVMs and their subsequent management with embolization.
