Abstract
Background Non-obstructive coronary artery disease (NOCAD) is a condition in stable patients that experience angina despite not having significant coronary obstructive lesion. Knowledge on the role of certain biomarkers in patients with NOCAD is still limited. This study aimed to evaluate the roles of inflammation and adhesion molecules in the development of NOCAD. The correlations between the peripheral and coronary levels of the inflammatory biomarkers and adhesion molecules were also investigated. Methods In this cross-sectional study, symptomatic angina patients scheduled for coronary angiograms were recruited and separated into obstructive coronary artery disease (OCAD) and NOCAD groups based on those angiograms. Peripheral and coronary blood samples were taken to measure inflammation biomarkers [high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15)], and adhesion molecules [vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1)]. Subjects without angina symptoms were recruited for the control group. Results The hsCRP, GDF-15, and VCAM-1 levels were higher in the OCAD and NOCAD groups than in the control group. VCAM-1 levels successfully predicted the incidence of NOCAD [p = 0.010, area under the curve (AUC) = 0.716]. All biomarkers' levels in the peripheral and coronary blood were correlated in OCAD and NOCAD patients (p < 0.001). Conclusion Elevated levels of the hsCRP, GDF-15, and VCAM-1 were found with NOCAD, despite the absent of significant coronary obstruction. VCAM-1 successfully predicted NOCAD and may thus serve as an early NOCAD biomarker. Significant correlations of hsCRP, GDF-15, and VCAM-1 level in peripheral and coronary blood indicate that the peripheral levels of these biomarkers reflect the levels and changes that occur at the coronary level.

Abstract
Vascular causes are most commonly associated with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). This study was performed to determine the relationship between serum endothelin-1 (ET-1), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) levels, and the degree of hearing loss in patients with SSHL. Firstly, 60 SSHL patients were admitted to The First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University. In the same period, 60 healthy subjects matching the age and gender of SSHL patients were selected as the control group. Then, serum levels of ET-1, HDL-C, and sVCAM-1 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Next, the relationship between serum levels of ET-1, HDL-C, and sVCAM-1 with clinicopathological factors and their diagnostic and prognostic values were analyzed and evaluated. Serum ET-1 and sVCAM-1 were increased, and HDL-C was decreased in patients with SSHL. Serum ET-1 and sVCAM-1 were higher and HDL-C was lower in patients aged ≥ 45 years, or severe hearing loss patients (P < 0.05). ROC analysis determined that ET-1 (AUC = 0.839), HDL-C (AUC = 0.830), and sVCAM-1 (AUC = 0.865) had excellent diagnostic values. In addition, patients with low levels of ET-1 and sVCAM-1 and high levels of HDL-C had better hearing prognosis (P < 0.05). Abnormal serum ET-1, HDL-C, and sVCAM-1 in patients with SSHL are closely related to age, and degree of hearing loss, and perform diagnostic and prognostic values.

Abstract
Coronary microvascular dysfunction is an underdiagnosed pathologic process that is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Biomarkers, molecules measurable in the blood, could inform the clinician by aiding in the diagnosis and management of coronary microvascular dysfunction. We present an updated review of circulating biomarkers in coronary microvascular dysfunction representing key pathologic processes, including inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, coagulation, and other mechanisms.

Abstract
The current gold standard for diagnosis of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) in the absence of myocardial diseases, whose clinical manifestation is microvascular angina (MVA), is reactivity testing using adenosine or acetylcholine during coronary angiography. This invasive test can be difficult to perform, expensive, and harmful. The identification of easily obtainable blood biomarkers which reflect the pathophysiology of CMD, characterized by high reliability, precision, accuracy, and accessibility may reduce risks and costs related to invasive procedures and even facilitate the screening and diagnosis of CMD. In this review, we summarized the results of several studies that have investigated the possible relationships between blood biomarkers involved with CMD and MVA. More specifically, we have divided the analyzed biomarkers into 3 different groups, according to the main mechanisms underlying CMD: biomarkers of "endothelial dysfunction," "vascular inflammation," and "oxidative stress." Finally, in the last section of the review, we consider mixed mechanisms and biomarkers which are not included in the 3 major categories mentioned above, but could be involved in the pathogenesis of CMD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relations of circulating adhesion molecule vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) with carotid artery elasticity in patients with impaired glucose regulation (IGR). METHODS A total of 208 subjects were enrolled from January 2013 to March 2014. One hundred forty-eight were IGR patients, and 60 had normal glucose tolerance (NGT). Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), carotid artery pressure-strain elasticity coefficient (Eρ), stiffness (β), arterial compliance (AC), and pulse wave velocity (PWVβ), as well as blood pressure, body mass index, blood glucose, blood lipids, insulin resistance index, VCAM-1, and ICAM-1 were measured and compared between IGR and NGT patients. RESULTS Eρ, β and PWVβ were significantly higher in the IGR group than in the NGT group (P<0.05), but the IMT showed no significant difference (P>0.05). VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 were significantly higher in the IGR group than in the NGT group (P<0.05). VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 were positively correlated with Eρ, β, and PWVβ and negatively correlated with AC in IGR patients. CONCLUSIONS Changes in carotid artery elasticity and endothelial dysfunction are found in patients with IGR. Early comprehensive intervention should be performed in such IGR populations.

Abstract
CONTEXT Inflammation is one of the mechanisms underlying cardiac syndrome X (CSX). OBJECTIVES Few studies have compared the expression of inflammatory or adhesion molecules between coronary artery disease (CAD) versus CSX. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-two CSX and 145 CAD subjects without known diabetes mellitus underwent coronary angiogram for angina. RESULTS Vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 (median, 507 versus 431 ng/ml, p = 0.001) was significantly higher in the CAD group. In the binary regression, VCAM-1 was a significant differential factor for CAD versus CSX. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Adhesion molecules might be implicated in the differential expression of macro versus microvascular coronary disease. Abstract
Degenerative aortic stenosis (AS) is the most frequent form of acquired valvular heart disease. AS is known to entail endothelial dysfunction caused by increased mechanical shear stress leading to elevated circulatory levels of microparticles. Endothelial and platelet microparticles (EMP and PMP) are small vesicles that originate from activated cells and thrombocytes. We sought to evaluate whether transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedure would elicit effects on circulating EMP and PMP. 92 patients undergoing TAVI procedure for severe AS were included in this study. Samples were obtained at each visit before TAVI, 1 week post-procedure and at 1, 3 and after 6 months after TAVI and were evaluated using flow cytometry. A 12 month clinical follow-up was also performed. CD62E+ EMP concentration before TAVI was 21.11 % (±6.6 % SD) and declined to 20.99 % (±6.8 % SD) after 1 week, to 16.63 % (±5.4 % SD, p < 0.0001) after 1 month, to 17.08 % (±4.6 % SD, p < 0.0001) after 3 months and to 15.94 % (±5.4 % SD, p < 0.0001) after 6 months. CD31+/CD42b-, CD31+/Annexin+/- EMP remained unchanged. CD31+/CD41b+ PMP evidenced a slight, but statistically significant increase after TAVI and remained elevated during the entire follow-up. Apart from a procedure-related improvement in echocardiographic parameters, TAVI procedure led also to a decline in CD62E+ EMP. The reduction in pressure gradients with less hemodynamic shear stress seems also to have beneficially affected endothelial homeostasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We assessed the predictive value of estimated whole blood viscosity (WBV) in-hospital and long-term cardiovascular outcomes in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). MATERIALS & METHODS One thousand eight hundred and thirty-five STEMI patients were followed up for median 34.6 months. WBV was calculated consistent with the de Simone's formula. RESULTS In-hospital and long-term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) demonstrated an incremental trend in ascending order of WBV tertiles at low and high shear rate. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a higher occurrence of long-term MACE in third WBV tertiles compared with other tertiles. CONCLUSION WBV seems to be a feasible prognostic indicator of short- and long-term cardiovascular adverse events in patients with STEMI. As an easily available parameter, WBV may be utilized in identifying high-risk patients for subsequent MACE.
