Abstract
BACKGROUND Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are common causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in low-income countries. Reducing adverse outcomes associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy has been the ultimate priority in recent years. We aim to evaluate the association between calcium supplementation and preeclampsia and gestational hypertension risk among pregnant women. METHODS A systematic literature search was performed in electronic databases from inception to 15th July 2023, including only randomized controlled trials. Odds ratio (OR) were, and their corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI). RESULTS A total of 26 studies with 20,038 patients (10,003 patients with calcium supplements and 10,035 patients with placebo group) were included in the analysis. The Pooled analysis of primary outcome shows that calcium supplements reduce the risk of preeclampsia by 49% (OR, 0.51(95%CI: 0.40-0.66), P<0.001), and reduce the risk of gestational hypertension by 30% (OR, 0.70 (95%CI: 0.58-0.85)), P<0.001) compared to placebo. There was a trend of lower incidence of preterm delivery (OR, 0.88 (95%CI: 0.71-1.09), P=0.23), labor induction (OR, 0.90 (95%CI: 0.78-1.03), P=0.13), small for gestational age (OR, 0.70 (95% CI:0.37-1.32), P = 0.27), low birth weight (OR, 0.96 (95%CI: 0.86-1.08), P=0.53), perinatal mortality (OR, 0.88 (95%CI: 0.72-1.09), P=0.24), and maternal mortality (OR, 0.48 (95%CI: 0.12-1.84), P=0.28) among calcium supplementation group compared with the placebo group, however, statistical signifance was not achieved. CONCLUSION This study shows that calcium supplements are associated with a significant reduction in the risk of preeclampsia and gestational hypertension and a trend toward better maternal and fetal-related outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is the most common food allergy in infants. As this food allergy indicates a wide range of clinical syndromes due to immunological reactions to cow's milk proteins, we aimed to evaluate the status of micronutrients in infants suffering from cow's milk allergy. METHODS In this historical cohort study, infants with CMA were divided into two equal groups: breastfeeding and diet formula feeding. Data were gathered by a form, including the micronutrients such as iron, selenium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamin D. Groups were compared and data were analyzed by the IBM SPSS version 21. RESULTS This study involved 60 six-month-old infants, and the findings revealed no significant difference between the two groups concerning magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamin D. However, infants in the formula-feeding group exhibited significantly elevated mean serum levels of iron and selenium, whereas breastfed infants displayed higher levels of calcium. CONCLUSION The findings of this research revealed a significant difference in calcium, selenium, and iron levels between formula-fed and breastfed infants, even though all variables were within the normal range for both groups. In light of these results, conducting further studies with a larger sample size and extended follow-up periods becomes imperative.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diets dense in fruits and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of preeclampsia, but pathways underlying this relationship are unclear. Dietary antioxidants may contribute to the protective effect. OBJECTIVE We determined the extent to which the effect of dietary fruit and vegetable density on preeclampsia is because of high intakes of dietary vitamin C and carotenoids. METHODS We used data from 7572 participants in the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: monitoring mothers-to-be (8 United States medical centers, 2010‒2013). Usual daily periconceptional intake of total fruits and total vegetables was estimated from a food frequency questionnaire. We estimated the indirect effect of ≥2.5 cups/1000 kcal of fruits and vegetables through vitamin C and carotenoid on the risk of preeclampsia. We estimated these effects using targeted maximum likelihood estimation and an ensemble of machine learning algorithms, adjusting for confounders, including other dietary components, health behaviors, and psychological, neighborhood, and sociodemographic factors. RESULTS Participants who consumed ≥2.5 cups of fruits and vegetables per 1000 kcal were less likely than those who consumed <2.5 cups/1000 kcal to develop preeclampsia (6.4% compared with 8.6%). After confounder adjustment, we observed that higher fruit and vegetable density was associated with 2 fewer cases of preeclampsia (risk difference: -2.0; 95% CI: -3.9, -0.1)/100 pregnancies compared with lower density diets. High dietary vitamin C and carotenoid intake was not associated with preeclampsia. The protective effect of high fruit and vegetable density on the risk of preeclampsia and late-onset preeclampsia was not mediated through dietary vitamin C and carotenoids. CONCLUSIONS Evaluating other nutrients and bioactives in fruits and vegetables and their synergy is worthwhile, along with characterizing the effect of individual fruits or vegetables on preeclampsia risk.

Abstract
Nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy can have serious consequences for the health of the (unborn) child. This systematic review provides an updated overview of the available food and nutrient intake data for pregnant women in The Netherlands and an evaluation based on the current recommendations. Embase, MEDLINE, and national institute databases were used. Articles were selected if they had been published since 2008 and contained data on food consumption, nutrient intake, or the status of healthy pregnant women. A qualitative comparison was made with the 2021 Dutch Health Council recommendations and reference values. A total of 218 reports were included, representing 54 individual studies. Dietary assessments were primarily performed via food frequency questionnaires. Protein, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin C, iron, calcium, and magnesium intakes seemed to be adequate. For folate and vitamin D, supplements were needed to reach the recommended intake. The reasons for concern are the low intakes of fruits, vegetables, and (fatty) fish, and the intakes of alcohol, sugary drinks, and salt. For several foods and nutrients, no or limited intake data were found. High-quality, representative, and recent data are needed to evaluate the nutrient intake of pregnant women in order to make accurate assessments and evaluations, supporting scientific-based advice and national nutritional policies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of incorporating calcium advice into early pregnancy counseling on calcium intake during pregnancy in the Netherlands. METHODS A multicenter prospective before-after cohort study was conducted introducing risk-based care including calculating individual pre-eclampsia risk. Part of the intervention was to incorporate calcium advice into routine counseling. We calculated individual daily calcium intake and adequacy of calcium intake (≥1,000 mg/day) at 16, 24 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. We performed a multiple logistic regression adjusting for covariates to identify any differences in the risk of inadequate calcium intake between RC and CAC. RESULTS In regular care (RC, 2013-2015, n=2,477) 60% had inadequate calcium intake, compared to 49% during calcium advice care (CAC, 2017-2018, n=774) (aOR 0.75, 95% CI 0.64-0.88). Specific calcium supplements were used by 2% and 29% in RC and CAC, respectively (OR 25.1, 95% CI 17.8-36.0). Determinants of an inadequate calcium intake were lower age (aOR per additional year 0.96, 95% CI: 0.94-0.98), nulliparity (aOR 1.22, 95% CI: 1.03-1.45) and non-Caucasian origin (aOR 1.83, 95% CI 1.09-3.09). In CAC, risk of inadequate intake decreased with increasing predicted pre-eclampsia risk, which was a trend reversal compared to RC. CONCLUSIONS Incorporating calcium advice into early pregnancy counseling was shown to lead to a decrease in the risk of inadequate calcium intake during pregnancy, but still inadequate intake in half of the women suggesting the need for further study on improving implementation. Awareness of individual increased PE risk had positive effect on calcium intake.

Abstract
This research analyzes the determining factors in diet quality among the Spanish pregnant population with the aim of promoting healthier eating habits and preventing the development of non-communicable diseases. It is a diagnostic, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and observational study, with correlational descriptive methodology, and 306 participants. The information was collected using the 24 h dietary recall. Various sociodemographic factors that influence diet quality were analyzed. It was found that pregnant women consume too much protein and fat, score high in SFA consumption, and do not achieve the CH recommendations, consuming twice as much sugar. Carbohydrate intake is inversely related to income (β = -0.144, p < 0.005). Likewise, protein intake is linked to marital status (β = -0.114, p < 0.005) and religion (β = 0.110, p < 0.005). Finally, lipid intake appears conditional upon age (β = 0.109, p < 0.005). As regards the lipid profile, a positive association is only observed with age and MFA consumption (β = 0.161, p < 0.01). On the other hand, simple sugars are positively related to education (β = 0.106, p < 0.005). The results of this research show that the diet quality of pregnant women does not meet the nutritional recommendations established for the Spanish population.

Abstract
Choline is an essential nutrient that is involved in various developmental processes during pregnancy. While the general adequate choline intake (AI) for adults has been set at 400 mg/day by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), an AI of 480 mg/day has been derived for pregnant women. To date, the choline intake of pregnant women in Germany has not been investigated yet. Therefore, in this survey, the total choline intake from dietary and supplementary sources in pregnant women was estimated using an online questionnaire. A total of 516 pregnant women participated in the survey, of which 283 met the inclusion criteria (13 to 41 weeks of gestational age, 19−45 years). 224 (79%) of the participants followed an omnivorous diet, 59 (21%) were vegetarian or vegan. Median choline intake was 260.4 (±141.4) mg/day, and only 19 women (7%) achieved the adequate choline intake. The median choline intake of omnivores was significantly higher than that of vegetarians/vegans (269.5 ± 141.5 mg/day vs. 205.2 ± 101.2 mg/day; p < 0.0001). 5% (13/283) of pregnant women took choline-containing dietary supplements. In these women, dietary supplements provided 19% of the total choline intake. Due to the importance of choline for the developmental processes during pregnancy, the study results prove the urgent need for an improved choline supply for pregnant women.

Abstract
Pregnancy is considered physiological stress, during which a woman's normal static metabolism becomes dynamic anabolism and significant changes are observed in biochemical factors. This study aimed to assess the relationship of serum vitamin D and calcium levels in a pregnant woman with a missed miscarriage. A comparison was performed among 160 women, including 80 females with missed miscarriage (as the study group) and 80 pregnant women (as the control group) in the first and second trimester of pregnancy (before the end of the 24th week of the pregnancy). The results of the comparison showed that there was an insignificant change in serum calcium, while there was a significant reduction in serum vitamin D (P≤0.05). It was also revealed that, in comparison to normal controls, there was a significant increase in the ratio of serum calcium/vitamin D ratio in cases of missed miscarriage (P≤0.05). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the estimations of serum vitamin D and calcium/vitamin D ratio in certain pregnancies can be considered valuable parameters in predicting missed miscarriage.

Abstract
Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery are at high risk for nutritional deficiencies before and after surgery if no proper supplementation and close follow-up are maintained. As pregnancies after these surgeries are occurring more frequently, deficiencies imply risks for both mother and child. Nutritional needs for this specific population are different from that of patients with obesity or a non-bariatric population. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the most described vitamins and minerals during pregnancy, after bariatric surgery, and during pregnancy after bariatric surgery in order to summarize their specific needs and possible side effects and to provide a useful guideline to the involved caregivers.

because it reduces the risk of heart disease and gestational diabetes. On the other hand,
vegetarians/vegans should be aware of potential deficiencies of some nutrients (iron, zinc,
vitamin B12, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iodine) and the clinical consequences
for the fetus. For example, iron deficiency may affect cognitive abilities, behavior, intelligence
and increase the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight of infants. Plant food contains
non-haem iron with variable absorption. Therefore, the vegan diet should include nutrients
increasing the bioavailability of iron, e.g. ascorbic acid, carotene and retinol. Due to the fact
that animal food is the main source of vitamin B12, vegans are at a very high risk of vitamin
B12 deficiency, which will affect the infant’s weight at birth. Low level of vitamin D, which is
prevalent in animal food, is the most common deficiency among vegans and lacto-ovo vegetarians.
This vitamin prevents gestational diabetes, reduces insulin resistance and guarantees
normal function of the musculoskeletal system. Zinc deficiency during pregnancy may lead to
preterm birth, neural tube defects or even miscarriage. In view of the clinical consequences
of potential deficiencies of nutrients, the vegetarian/vegan diet should be well balanced.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Maternal food intake during pregnancy can substantially interfere in the baby's anthropometric measurements at birth. Our objective was to perform a systematic review that investigate the influence of nutrient intake via food during pregnancy on the baby's anthropometric measurements at birth. METHODS A search was performed without time limits on CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases and manual on studies references. All nutrients and baby's anthropometric measurements at birth were included as descriptors. RESULTS Thirty articles were included, the majority of prospective cohort studies, with 15.39 (2.36) quality points (maximum value: 22). Thirty-six results of associations were found, of which 17 studies had direct associations between nutrient intake and birth outcomes. Inverse associations were identified in 8 studies and 11 articles showed no significant associations in all analyses. Maternal food intake of vitamin C, calcium and magnesium during pregnancy seems to have a positive influence on the baby's birth weight, while carbohydrates intake have an inverse association with the same outcome. CONCLUSION It is suggested that vitamin C, calcium, magnesium and carbohydrates influence on baby's birth weight. So, these specific nutrients need more attention to the consumption, in addition to carried out new studies, with robust methodologies for measuring maternal food consumption and considering the several factors that can interfere in this assessment. Abstract
Food is a major source of minerals for humans. The main objective of this study was to determine the intake level of 10 essential macro- (Na, K, Ca, and Mg) and trace elements (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cr, and Se) with major food groups among young adults. Dietary intake of elements was evaluated using the 24-h dietary recall technique in combination with F-AAS and ICP-OES methods. A very high intake of sodium and a very low intake of calcium, combined with inappropriate sodium/potassium ratio, may be harmful to the health of the population. Dietary intake of trace elements was within the range of reference values in the subjects, with cereals being the major source of a majority of those elements, while meat (38% for Na), vegetables (25% for K), and milk products (75% for Ca) were the main contributors to the daily dietary intake of macroelements. PCA revealed several visible trends in the datasetAmong men, the intake of Zn, Cr Na and K was significantly correlated with the consumption of meat and vegetables, whereas Mg, Se, Fe and Cu with cereals and water and beverages. Among women, the intake of Mg was significantly correlated with the consumption of meat and vegetables.

Abstract
There are striking inequities in calcium intake between rich and poor populations. Appropriate calcium intake has shown many health benefits, such as reduction of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, lower blood pressure particularly among young people, prevention of osteoporosis and colorectal adenomas, lower cholesterol values, and lower blood pressure in the progeny of mothers taking sufficient calcium during pregnancy. Studies have refuted some calcium supplementation side effects like damage to the iron status, formation of renal stones and myocardial infarction in older people. Attention should be given to bone resorption in post-partum women after calcium supplementation withdrawal. Mechanisms linking low calcium intake and blood pressure are mediated by parathyroid hormone raise that increases intracellular calcium in vascular smooth muscle cells leading to vasoconstriction. At the population level, an increase of around 400–500 mg/day could reduce the differences in calcium intake between high- and middle-low-income countries. The fortification of food and water seems a possible strategy to reach this goal.
