Abstract
As major nonenzymatic antioxidant components in the body, dietary Zinc (Zn) and Selenium (Se) may have an impact on breast cancer development. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary Zn, Se intake and breast cancer risk in Chinese women. The case-control study included 1591 cases and 1622 age-frequency matched controls. Dietary intake was collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Dietary Zn and Se were divided into four categories: Zn/Se from plants, Zn/Se from meat, Zn/Se from red meat, and Zn/Se from white meat. Unconditional logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed to identify potential associations. Zn from white meat intake was linearly and inversely associated with breast cancer risk, and Se from red meat intake was linearly and positively associated with breast cancer risk, with adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval of 0.76 (0.61-0.95) and 1.36 (1.04-1.77), respectively. Non-linear relationships were found between total dietary Zn, Zn from meat, Zn from red meat intake and breast cancer risk (pnon-linearity < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary Zn and Se intake were associated with breast cancer risk in Chinese women, and the optimal intake of Zn may be beneficial for breast cancer prevention.

Abstract
BackgroundAlthough the association of zinc (Zn) with cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been studied, no consensus has been reached on this relationship, particularly dietary Zn intake. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of dietary Zn intake on the risk of CVD and to analyze whether this effect varied according to zinc consumption using representative data from China.Methods11,470 adults from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) were eventually enrolled. The dietary information was collected by the 3 day 24-h dietary recalls combined with dietary weighting method. CVD was defined as participants with self-reported physician-diagnosed apoplexy and/or myocardial infarction during the follow-up. Cox regression was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) of CVD with 95% confidence intervals. Restricted cubic spline function plus Cox regression was used to visualize the influence trend of dietary Zn intake on new-onset CVD and to test whether this trend is linear. 2-segment Cox regression was established to address the nonlinear trend.Results431 participants developed CVD, including 262 strokes and 197 myocardial infarctions. Compared with the lowest quintile (Q1), the adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence interval (CI) of CVD in Q2 to Q5 of dietary Zn intake were 0.72 (0.54, 0.97), 0.59 (0.42, 0.81), 0.50 (0.34, 0.72) and 0.44 (0.27, 0.71), respectively. The influence trend of dietary Zn intake on new-onset CVD was nonlinear and L-shaped. When dietary Zn intake <13.66 mg/day, increased dietary Zn intake was significantly associated with decreased risk of developing CVD (HR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.82–0.92, p-value <0.0001).ConclusionAn L-shaped trend was observed between dietary Zn intake and the risk of developing CVD, indicating that dietary Zn intake should be improved moderately, but not excessively, for the benefit of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Previous studies have suggested a possible association among dietary zinc and vitamin B6 intake and CVD mortality and all-cause mortality. However, evidence on the association of dietary zinc and vitamin B6 intake and their interactions with CVD mortality and all-cause mortality remains unclear. This prospective study utilized data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2016. After a median follow-up of 10.4 years, 4757 deaths were recorded among 36,081 participants. Higher dietary zinc intake levels (≥9.87 mg/day) were associated with lower CVD mortality (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.83−0.87). Vitamin B6 intake levels (≥1.73 mg/day) were associated with lower CVD mortality (HR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86−0.96) and all-cause mortality (HR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.90−0.93). Higher dietary zinc intake and higher vitamin B6 intake were associated with a lower risk of CVD mortality, with an interaction between dietary zinc intake levels and vitamin B intake levels (LZLV group (HR, CI): 1.21,1.12−1.29; LZHV group (HR, CI): 1.42, 1.34−1.50; LZHV group (HR, CI): 1.28, 1.14−1.45; HZHV group (HR, CI): ref). There was also a J-type association (p for nonlinear < 0.001) between the dietary zinc−vitamin B6 ratio and CVD mortality, with a high dietary zinc−vitamin B6 ratio increasing the risk of CVD mortality (HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.19−1.35), whereas a moderate dietary zinc−vitamin B6 ratio appeared to be beneficial for CVD mortality. These results suggest that increasing the appropriate proportion of dietary zinc and vitamin B6 intake is associated with a lower risk of CVD mortality. Furthermore, precise and representative studies are needed to verify our findings.

Abstract
Introduction: Renal interstitial fibrosis is a common pathophysiological change in the chronic kidney disease (CKD). Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent deacetylase sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) is demonstrated to protect against kidney injury. Vitamin B3 is the mostly used form of NAD precursors. However, the role of SIRT6 overexpression in renal interstitial fibrosis of CKD and the association between dietary vitamin B3 intake and renal function remain to be elucidated. Methods: Wild-type (WT) and SIRT6-transgene (SIRT6-Tg) mice were given with high-adenine diets to establish CKD model. HK2 cells were exposed to transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) in vitro to explore related mechanism. Population data from Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) was used to examine the association between dietary vitamin B3 intake and renal function decline. Results: Compared to WT mice, SIRT6-Tg mice exhibited alleviated renal interstitial fibrosis as evidenced by reduced collagen deposit, collagen I and α-smooth muscle actin expression. Renal function was also improved in SIRT6-Tg mice. Homeodomain interacting protein kinase 2 (HIPK2) was induced during the fibrogenesis in CKD, while HIPK2 was downregulated after SIRT6 overexpression. Further assay in vitro confirmed that SIRT6 depletion exacerbated epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition of HK2 cells, which might be linked with HIPK2 upregulation. HIPK2 was inhibited by SIRT6 in the post-transcriptional level. Population study indicated that higher dietary vitamin B3 intake was independently correlated with a lower risk of estimate glomerular filtration rate decline in those ≥65 years old during follow-up. Conclusion: SIRT6/HIPK2 axis serves as a promising target of renal interstitial fibrosis in CKD. Dietary vitamin B3 intake is beneficial for renal function in the old people.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Although zinc (Zn) was reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and protective properties in CVDs, its association with coronary artery disease (CAD) is still unclear. As methods commonly used to assess Zn levels in blood and urine do not show the full picture of the microelement supply, in this study, the nutritional status of Zn in patients with angiographically confirmed CAD was assessed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. We found no association between Zn and the severity of CAD evaluated with the Coronary Artery Surgery Study Score (p = 0.67). There were no statistically significant differences in Zn levels between patients with acute coronary syndrome and those with stable CAD (p = 0.937). A statically significant negative correlation was observed between Zn content and serum triglyceride concentration (p < 0.05). Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were found to have a significantly lower hair Zn content compared to non-diabetic individuals (p < 0.01). The role of Zn in the pathogenesis of CAD and its complications need further well-designed research as the moderation and supplementation of Zn dietary intake could be a simple intervention to reduce the CVDs risk.

Abstract
Background Epidemiological studies have investigated the association between dietary zinc intake and metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, their results are conflicting. This meta-analysis was therefore employed to investigate the associations further. Methods A comprehensive literature search was employed by using the electronic database of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase up to November 2021. The pooled relative risk (RR) of MetS for the highest vs. lowest dietary zinc intake category, and the weighted mean difference (WMD) of dietary zinc intake for MetS vs. control subjects as well as their corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Results A total of 13 observational studies (18,073 participants) were identified in this meta-analysis. The overall multi-variable adjusted RR demonstrated that the dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with MetS (RR = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.61 to 0.93; P = 0.009). The subgroup analysis confirmed such findings in cross-sectional (RR = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.55 to 0.87; P = 0.002), NCEP-ATP III (RR = 0.64, 95%CI: 0.48 to 0.84; P = 0.002), adult (RR = 0.77, 95%CI: 0.62 to 0.96; P = 0.02), dietary recall method (RR = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.55 to 0.87; P = 0.002), and >500 sample-sized study (RR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.64 to 0.99; P = 0.002), respectively. On the other hand, the overall combined WMD showed that the dietary zinc intake in MetS was also lower than that in control subjects (WMD = −0.21, 95%CI: −0.42 to 0.00; P = 0.05). Conclusions Our results suggest that the dietary zinc intake is negatively associated with MetS. However, due to the limitation of available evidence. More well-designed prospective cohort studies are still needed.
