The effect of a minimum amount of octyl-β-D-glucoside on micellar, nematic, and hexagonal phases of the CTAB/glycerol/ water system

Use of the ternary phase diagram of a mixed cationic/glucopyranoside surfactant system to predict mesostructured silica synthesis

Mixed surfactant systems have the potential to impart controlled combinations of functionality and pore structure to mesoporous metal oxides. Here, we combine a functional glucopyranoside surfactant with a cationic surfactant that readily forms liquid crystalline mesophases. The phase diagram for the ternary system CTAB/H(2)O/n-octyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (C(8)G(1)) at 50 degrees C is measured using polarized optical microscopy. At this temperature, the binary C(8)G(1)/H(2)O system forms disordered micellar solutions up to 72 wt% C(8)G(1), and there is no hexagonal phase. With the addition of CTAB, we identify a large area of hexagonal phase, as well as cubic, lamellar and solid surfactant phases. The ternary phase diagram is used to predict the synthesis of thick mesoporous silica films via a direct liquid crystal templating technique. By changing the relative concentration of mixed surfactants as well as inorganic precursor species, surfactant/silica mesostructured thick films can be synthesized with variable glucopyranoside content, and with 2D hexagonal, cubic and lamellar structures. The domains over which different mesophases are prepared correspond well with those of the ternary phase diagram if the hydrophilic inorganic species is assumed to act as an equivalent volume of water.

Molecular dynamics characterization of n-octyl-β-d-glucopyranoside micelle structure in aqueous solution

n-Octyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (OG) is a non-ionic glycolipid, which is used widely in biotechnical and biochemical applications. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations from two different initial coordinates and velocities in explicit solvent have been performed to characterize the structural behaviour of an OG aggregate at equilibrium conditions. Geometric packing properties determined from the simulations and small angle neutron scattering experiment state that OG micelles are more likely to exist in a non-spherical shape, even at the concentration range near to the critical micelle concentration (0.025 M). Despite few large deviations in the principal moment of inertia ratios, the average micelle shape calculated from both simulations is a prolate ellipsoid. The deviations at these time scales are presumably the temporary shape change of a micelle. However, the size of the micelle and the accessible surface areas were constant during the simulations with the micelle surface being rough and partially elongated. Radial distribution functions computed for the hydroxyl oxygen atoms of an OG show sharper peaks at a minimum van der Waals contact distance than the acetal oxygen, ring oxygen, and anomeric carbon atoms. This result indicates that these atoms are pointed outwards at the hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface, form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules, and thus hydrate the micelle surface effectively.

The effect of octyl glucoside on the lamellar phase of diluted C12E4 and alcohol systems

A systematic study on phase behavior of the mixture of nonionic surfactants with alcohols at 30.0+/-0.1 degrees C was carried out. The total surfactant concentration was kept to 0.1 M varying the mole ratio of n-octyl beta-d-glucopyranoside (OG) and tetraethylene glycol monododecyl ether. Two uniphasic regions were found, the lamellar phase at low OG mole fraction and micelles at high OG mole fraction. The presence of OG favors the lamellae-micelle transition. Alkanols and benzyl alcohol were used as cosurfactants. The more hydrophobic alcohols (octanol and decanol) increase the OG content in the mixed bilayers. On the contrary, benzyl alcohol is not as favorable to the OG incorporation in the lamellar phase as in the mixed micelles. The L(3) phase has only been found as a uniphasic region with hexanol.
