Impact of digital boards on hand and neck muscle activity during online teaching process

Academicians across the globe due to Covid 19 shifted to online teaching as a mainstream method by replacing the chalk and talk method. The main objective of this study is to find the impact of different sizes of digital boards used for online teaching on muscle activity and muscle fatigue, and then results are compared with conventional writing. Initially, a questionnaire survey is conducted among 100 college professors about the issue they faced while using online teaching methods. Experimental analysis are then conducted using electromyography sensor (sEMG) among ten college professors and their muscle activity on the dominant hand and neck while writing on two commercially available digital boards namely Type 1 (small writing area) and Type 2 (large writing area). Four muscles namely Flexor carpi radialis, Extensor carpi radialis, Biceps brachii, and Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) are chosen for the study. The results are then compared with muscle activity while writing on conventional A4 sheets. Normalized root mean square (RMS) is used to assess the muscle activity and the trend line of MPF value is utilized to assess the muscle fatigue. The results show that SCM muscle has more muscle activation compared to other selected muscles followed by flexor carpi radialis. Subjective analysis is carried out using the Borg scale, which has reported that Type 2 digital board having larger working area was preferred by the participants as it reduces muscle fatigue.

Reconstruction of net force fluctuations from surface EMGs of multiple muscles in steady isometric plantarflexion

The purposes of this study were to clarify if force fluctuations during steady multi-muscle contractions have a temporal correlation with a low-frequency component of rectified surface EMG (rEMG) in the involved muscles and collection of that component across muscles allows for the reconstruction of force fluctuations across a wide range of contraction intensities. Healthy young men (n = 15) exerted steady isometric plantarflexion force at 5-60% of maximal force. Surface EMG was recorded from the medial and lateral gastrocnemii, soleus, peroneus longus, abductor hallucis, and tibialis anterior muscles. The cross-correlation function (CCF) between plantarflexion force fluctuations and low-pass filtered rEMG in each muscle was calculated for 8 s. To reconstruct force fluctuations from rEMGs, the product of rEMG and an identified constant factor were summed across muscles with time-lag compensation for electro-mechanical delay. A distinct peak of the CCF was found between plantarflexion force fluctuations and rEMG in most cases except for the tibialis anterior. The CCF peak was greatest in the medial gastrocnemius and soleus. Reconstructed force from rEMGs was temporally correlated with measured force fluctuations across contraction intensities (average CCF peak: r = 0.65). The results indicate that individual surface rEMG has a low-frequency component that is temporally correlated with net force fluctuations during steady multi-muscle contractions and contributes to the reconstruction of force fluctuations across a wide range of contraction intensities. It suggests a potential applicability of individual surface EMGs for identifying the contributing muscles to controlling or disturbing isometric steady force in multi-muscle contractions.

Differences in Respiratory Muscle Responses to Hyperpnea or Loaded Breathing in COPD

INTRODUCTION

We aimed to compare acute mechanical and metabolic responses of the diaphragm and rib cage inspiratory muscles during two different types of respiratory loading in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

METHODS

In 16 patients (age, 65 ± 13 yr; 56% male; forced expiratory volume in the first second, 60 ± 6%pred; maximum inspiratory pressure, 82 ± 5%pred), assessments of respiratory muscle EMG, esophageal pressure (Pes) and gastric pressures, breathing pattern, and noninvasive assessments of systemic (V˙O2, cardiac output, oxygen delivery and extraction) and respiratory muscle hemodynamic and oxygenation responses (blood flow index, oxygen delivery index, deoxyhemoglobin concentration, and tissues oxygen saturation [StiO2]), were performed during hyperpnea and loaded breathing.

RESULTS

During hyperpnea, breathing frequency, minute ventilation, esophageal and diaphragm pressure-time product per minute, cardiac output, and V˙O2 were higher than during loaded breathing (P < 0.05). Average inspiratory Pes and transdiaphragmatic pressure per breath, scalene (SCA), sternocleidomastoid, and intercostal muscle activation were higher during loading breathing compared with hyperpnea (P < 0.05). Higher transdiaphragmatic pressure during loaded breathing compared with hyperpnea was mostly due to higher inspiratory Pes (P < 0.05). Diaphragm activation, inspiratory and expiratory gastric pressures, and rectus abdominis muscle activation did not differ between the two conditions (P > 0.05). SCA-blood flow index and oxygen delivery index were lower, and SCA-deoxyhemoglobin concentration was higher during loaded breathing compared with hyperpnea. Furthermore, SCA and intercostal muscle StiO2 were lower during loaded breathing compared with hyperpnea (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Greater inspiratory muscle effort during loaded breathing evoked larger rib cage and neck muscle activation compared with hyperpnea. In addition, lower SCA and intercostal muscle StiO2 during loaded breathing compared with hyperpnea indicates a mismatch between inspiratory muscle oxygen delivery and utilization induced by the former condition.

Effects of inspiratory muscle strength and inspiratory resistance on neck inspiratory muscle activation during controlled inspirations

NEW FINDINGS

What is the central question of this study? What factors influence the onset and magnitude of activation of the neck inspiratory muscles during inspiration? What is the main finding and its importance? Recruitment of the sternocleidomastoid and scalene muscles during inspiration, measured by means of surface EMG, was strongly correlated with maximal inspiratory pressure. This result indicates that muscle recruitment depends on the capacity of an individual to generate inspiratory pressure. Surface measurements of neck inspiratory muscle EMG activity might complement tests currently used for the screening of respiratory-related disease.

ABSTRACT

The aims of the present study were as follows: (i) to examine the relationship between the onset of recruitment of the neck inspiratory muscles and inspiratory muscle strength; and (ii) to clarify the effect of inspiratory resistance on neck inspiratory muscle activation during inspiration at specific flow rates and to specific lung volumes. Inspiratory muscle strength, as indicated by maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), and peak inspiratory flow rate (PFR) were measured in healthy participants. Subsequently, participants inspired at target inspiratory flow rates between 20 and 100% of PFR as closely as possible, with and without artificial inspiratory resistance. Electromyographic activity (EMG_RMS ) of the sternocleidomastoid and scalene muscles was measured from surface electrodes at each target flow rate for each 10% increment of forced vital capacity (FVC) between 20 and 50% of FVC. Recruitment onset for each muscle was determined from %PFR-EMG_RMS curves at each lung volume (%FVC). Finally, linear regression analyses were performed for MIP and recruitment onset for each muscle at each %FVC. Recruitment onset during inspiration without inspiratory resistance was strongly correlated with MIP (r > 0.60, P < 0.040). Specifically, a lower MIP was associated with earlier muscle recruitment (i.e. recruitment at a lower flow rate), especially for the sternocleidomastoid muscle (r > 0.75, P < 0.005). Recruitment of both neck inspiratory muscles at a given flow rate was also earlier when inspiratory resistance was added (P = 0.002). These results indicate that the recruitment and activation of the neck inspiratory muscles depends on both inspiratory muscle strength and inspiratory resistance.
