Abstract
BACKGROUND Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC), the second most prevalent thyroid cancer after papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), tends to metastasize distantly, leading to poorer outcomes. Despite substantial research, a holistic bibliometric analysis of FTC literature is lacking. This study aims to fill this gap by employing bibliometric methods to track FTC research evolution. METHODS English FTC publications were systematically gathered from the Web of Science. Bibliometric analysis, using R, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Excel, synthesized data and explored global research trends and topics. RESULTS From 2000 to 2023, 9086 authors from 1953 institutions across 75 countries contributed to 1776 papers in 491 academic journals on FTC. The last two decades have witnessed a steady increase in publications related to FTC, with the United States leading in terms of publication volume. The United States dominated both in publications and citations, with the National Cancer Institute and Sheue-Yann Cheng as leading contributors. The journal 'Thyroid' featured the most publications, while the 'Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism' ranked highest in citation frequency. Research focused on gene expression analysis and preoperative diagnostics, with recent trends shifting toward prognosis management and machine learning due to advances in medical technology and increased health awareness. CONCLUSION This comprehensive bibliometric analysis has mapped the landscape of FTC research, highlighting key contributors, institutions, and thematic trends. Current discourse predominantly revolves around genetic analysis, prognostic determinants, and preoperative diagnostics in FTC. This foundational work guides future FTC research, providing insights into its evolution.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of 4 different ultrasound-based risk scoring systems for thyroid nodules (TNs). This study consecutively included 256 patients (mean age: 43.98 ± 12.94 years, min-max: 18-89 years; 225 females, 31 males) with 266 TNs. Each nodule was evaluated and classified according to the American Thyroid Association (ATA), American College of Radiology (ACR), European Thyroid Association, and Korean Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (ACR-TIRADS, EU-TIRADS, and K-TIRADS, respectively) before performing ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Pathological results were reported according to the Bethesda system. Outcomes of the 4 classification systems were compared with respect to Bethesda results. Twenty-eight (10.5%) nodules had malignant cytology results. Diagnostic performances of the scoring systems were comparable with similar area under the curve values according to the reference standards of category 5 of each scoring system. The sensitivity and specificity values of these guidelines were as follows: ACR-TIRADS, 60.7% and 95.4%; EU-TIRADS, 71.4% and 93.3%; ATA-2015, 71.4% and 93.3%; and K-TIRADS, 67.9% and 93.3%. The biopsy rate of malignant nodules was 57.1% for K-TIRADS and ATA, whereas this value was 46.4% for ACR and EU-TIRADS. ACR-TIRADS had the lowest unnecessary biopsy rate (141 of 238 benign nodules, 46%). The diagnostic performance of 4 risk stratification systems appears to be comparable, as shown by similar sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve values. However, the ACR-TIRADS had slightly higher accuracy and necessitated fewer unnecessary biopsies for benign nodules.

Abstract
PURPOSE Familial papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (FPTMC) can present a more aggressive behavior than the sporadic microcarcinoma. However, few studies have analyzed this situation. The objective is to analyze the recurrence rate of FPTMC and the prognostic factors which determine that recurrence in Spain. METHODS Spanish multicenter longitudinal analytical observational study was conducted. Patients with FPTMC received treatment with curative intent and presented cure criteria 6 months after treatment. Recurrence rate and disease-free survival (DFS) were analyzed. Two groups were analyzed: group A (no tumor recurrence) vs. group B (tumor recurrence). RESULTS Ninety-four patients were analyzed. During a mean follow-up of 73.3 ± 59.3 months, 13 recurrences of FPTMC (13.83%) were detected and mean DFS was 207.9 ± 11.5 months. There were multifocality in 56%, bilateral thyroid involvement in 30%, and vascular invasion in 7.5%; that is to say, they are tumors with histological factors of poor prognosis in a high percentage of cases. The main risk factors for recurrence obtained in the multivariate analysis were the tumor size (OR: 2.574, 95% CI 1.210-5.473; p = 0.014) and the assessment of the risk of recurrence of the American Thyroid Association (ATA), both intermediate risk versus low risk (OR: 125, 95% CI 10.638-1000; p < 0.001) and high risk versus low risk (OR: 45.454, 95% CI 5.405-333.333; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION FPTMC has a recurrence rate higher than sporadic cases. Poor prognosis is mainly associated with the tumor size and the risk of recurrence of the ATA.

Abstract
This study investigated the diagnostic value of the Angio Planewave Ultrasensitive (AngioPLUS) Doppler ultrasound in improving the efficacy of grey scale ultrasound in thyroid nodule diagnosis. The EU TIRADS was used for the grey scale ultrasound assessment of 94 thyroid nodules. conventional Doppler and AngioPLUS Doppler ultrasound images were evaluated using qualitative vascularity grading, where predominant central vascularity indicated malignancy-suspicion, and quantitative regional vascularity assessment, where predominant peripheral vascularity using a ratio vascularity index (RVI) of > 1 indicated benign disease. Diagnostic performance outcomes of sole and combination approaches were calculated based on final pathologic results. Using sole EU TIRADS and AngioPLUS + power Doppler imaging (APDI) based on qualitative vascularity and RVI, the results were a sensitivity of 83.3% vs. 83.3 vs. 66.7% and a specificity of 50% vs. 81.3% vs. 73.4, respectively. EU TIRADS combined with APDI significantly improved the specificity using both qualitative vascularity and RVI assessment approaches (84.4% and 81%, respectively, p < 0.05); and slightly reduced the sensitivity (76.7% and 58.1%). For cytologically-equivocal thyroid nodules, the combination approach using qualitative vascularity assessment outperformed the EU TIRADS (sensitivity: both were 88.9%; specificity: 77.4% vs. 38.7%, p < 0.05; and AUROC: 0.83 vs. 0.62, p < 0.05). APDI combined with EU TIRADS is diagnostically efficient in stratifying thyroid nodules, particularly cytologically-equivocal nodules.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer is one of the few cancers diagnosed by cytological examination of thin nodule puncture biopsies. To achieve standardization of diagnostic terminology, morphological criteria and risk of malignancy in the whole world, the 6-level Bethesda system is used. The work aimed to analyze the results of cytological examination of fine-needle aspiration puncture biopsies (TAPBs) of thyroid nodules according to the international Bethesda system for the last three years and compare them with the world practice. As a result, 5687 surveys were conducted, where the proportion of women was 87.9% and of men 12.1%. Of all the cases, the most extensive cytological findings were of class II (benign formation) - 3061 studies (57%). The number of cases interpreted as class III was within the reference values, i.e. 8.2%. The fourth class accounted for 8.2%, the fifth for 3.5%, and the sixth for 5.0%. In total, these three classes account for 17.2%. Our analysis compared the reference values and data from other laboratories revealed comparable results. The analysis of the structure of the results of cytological investigations according to Bethesda revealed a high rate of the first class (non-informative), which indicates the need for more accurate interaction between clinical physicists and cytologists.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to compare three guidelines according to their diagnostic accuracy in the management of thyroid nodules. METHODS A total of 540 patients with 597 thyroid nodules were enrolled in this study. Sonographic images were classified and scored with the American Thyroid Association (ATA-2015), American College of Radiology (ACR), and European Thyroid Association (EU) Thyroid Imaging, Reporting, and Data Systems (ACR-TIRADS and EU-TIRADS) guidelines. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was performed, and cytopathological results were reported with the Bethesda system. Outcomes of these three classification systems were then correlated with Bethesda results. RESULTS FNAB procedures revealed a total of 447 benign and 45 malignant nodules. With guideline dedicated FNAB criteria; 38 malignant nodules could have been diagnosed with ATA-2015, which is followed by 34 nodules with ACR-TIRADS, and 31 nodules with EU-TIRADS. Nonetheless, 301 benign nodules would have been biopsied with ATA-2015, 143 benign nodules with ACR-TIRADS, 222 benign nodules with EU-TIRADS. The accuracy rate was found to be highest with ACR-TIRADS (59.93 %); while 55.20 % with ATA-2015 and 51.25 % with EU-TIRADS. The sensitivity and specificity ratios of these guidelines were as follows; ATA-2015 (82.22, 53.47), ACR-TIRADS (48.89, 60.63), and EU-TIRADS (86.67, 48.99). A total of 23 nodules (3.8 %) could not be classified with ATA-2015. CONCLUSION Diagnostic strengths, unnecessary recommended FNAB rates, and categorization capabilities differ among various guidelines. Clinicians and interventional radiologists should keep in mind these features in the management of thyroid nodules.

Abstract
Background Classifying thyroid lesions is challenging; nonetheless, using ultrasonography may allow for accurate diagnosis, differentiation and management of thyroid lesions and help avoid unnecessary biopsy. Objectives The main objective of the study is to determine the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography in classifying thyroid nodules compared with fine-needle aspiration. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included all 68 patients diagnosed with thyroid nodules at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, between June 1, 2014, and November 30, 2016. Parameters were selected based on the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound criteria. Ultrasonographic features, namely, nodule margins, echotexture, vascularity and calcifications, and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) results were reviewed by two radiologists blinded to each other's findings and validated by another experienced interventional radiologist. Ultrasonography results were compared against that of FNAC to calculate sensitivity and positive- and negative-likelihood ratios, and the nodule types were compared using Fisher's exact test. Results Of the 68 nodules analyzed, 59 were reported as benign using FNAC (specificity = 95%; P < 0.001). Of these 59, 56 were also reported as benign using ultrasonography. The specificity of ultrasonography in determining benign nodules was 94.9%, and the positive- and negative-likelihood ratios were 13.0 and 0.35, respectively. Six of the nine suspicious nodules were confirmed as malignant using FNAC, and the ultrasonography and FNAC findings were strongly associated (P = 0.001). According to the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound criteria, FNAC and ultrasonography findings were significantly associated for nodule calcification (P = 0.001) and echogenicity (P = 0.001). Conclusion The diagnostic specificity of ultrasonography and FNAC in this study are consistent with those reported previously, indicating that ultrasonography reliably classifies thyroid nodules, and thus can assist in the decision-making regarding need for biopsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Billing diagnoses are used for quality assurance, estimates of prevalence and resource allocation. Validity studies showed relevant limitations. In Germany, there are no population-based data on the agreement of outpatient billing diagnoses with clinical data of thyroid disorders. OBJECTIVES The study investigated the agreement of ICD-diagnosed thyroid nodules, goitre, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and thyroiditis with clinical and self-reported data from the population-based cohort study called the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). MATERIALS AND METHODS Billing data from the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were linked on an individual level for the period from 2002-2016 with data from SHIP. The agreement was evaluated using sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive value (PPW, NPW). Data were weighted to ensure population representativeness. RESULTS The data of 5746 participants were analysed (46% male, average age 55 years, SD [standard deviation] ± 15, min: 20 years, max: 93 years). Based on clinical data, 63% (3451/5511, missing values n = 235) and based on billing data 25% (1421/5746) of the participants had thyroid disorders. The sensitivity was 12-36%, the specificity was 84-98%, the PPW was highest for thyroid nodules (75%) and hypothyroidism (70%) and the NPW was between 63 and 94%, depending on the investigated thyroid disorder. CONCLUSIONS Thyroid disorders are common and often undiagnosed. Billing data have a low sensitivity to identify clinically relevant thyroid disorders.
