Abstract
OBJECTIVES Osteoporosis is the most prevalent metabolic bone disorder worldwide. This review was undertaken to compare the efficacies of bisphosphonates therapies for patient persistence and compliance for the treatment of osteoporosis. METHODS A systematic review was performed in accordance with the available reporting items. MEDLINE and Cochrane library databases were applied for literature searched up to January 2020. All major studies such as prospective, retrospective and reviews articles that examined patient persistence or compliance to bisphosphonates for osteoporosis were included. RESULTS Literature search found 656 relevant published reports, out of which 87 were included. The 10,712,176 osteoporotic patients were studied for patient persistence and 5,875,718 patients were studied for patient compliances. Analysis of all studied bisphosphonates showed almost similar patterns for patient persistence rates as it was decreased over the time following initial prescription but persistence length was found to be significantly high for alendronate therapy as compared to the other studied bisphosphonates (p<0.001), whereas the length of persistence of all other bisphosphonates (other than alendronate) were almost same (p>0.05). Analysis of patient compliances with etidronate therapy showed the highest percent medication possession ratio (MRP) at 12 months, followed by the MRPs of ibandronate, alendronate, risedronate, and clodronate. CONCLUSIONS This is the first systematic review that shows the comparison of the efficiencies of bisphosphonates for patient persistence and compliance for the treatment of osteoporosis. The data showed that the length of patient persistence was highest for alendronate therapy, whereas patient compliance was highest for etidronate therapy for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examined patient adherence and persistence to oral bisphosphonates for the treatment of osteoporosis in real-world settings. METHODS A systematic review was completed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database NHS EED) databases were searched for studies published in English language up to April 2018. Prospective and retrospective observational studies that used prescription claim databases or hospital medical records to examine patient adherence and persistence to oral bisphosphonate treatment among adults with osteoporosis were included. The Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of included studies. RESULTS The search yielded 540 published studies, of which 89 were deemed relevant and were included in this review. The mean age of patients included within the studies ranged between 53 to 80.8 years, and the follow-up varied from 3 months to 14 years. The mean persistence of oral bisphosphonates for 6 months, 1 year and 2 years ranged from 34.8% to 71.3%, 17.7% to 74.8% and 12.9% to 72.0%, respectively. The mean medication possession ratio ranged from 28.2% to 84.5%, 23% to 50%, 27.2% to 46% over 1 year, 2 years and 3 years, respectively. All studies included scored between 6 to 8 out of 9 on the NOS. The determinants of adherence and persistence to oral bisphosphonates included geographic residence, marital status, tobacco use, educational status, income, hospitalisation, medication type and dosing frequency. CONCLUSIONS While a number of studies reported high levels of persistence and adherence, the findings of this review suggest that patient persistence and adherence with oral bisphosphonates medications was poor and reduced notably over time. Overall, adherence was suboptimal. To maximise adherence and persistence to oral bisphosphonates, it is important to consider possible determinants, including characteristics of the patients.

Abstract
Background Adjuvant bisphosphonates (BPs) are recommended as part of routine early breast cancer treatment for many postmenopausal (PM) women within the past year. There is a paucity of ‘real world’ data on compliance and patient satisfaction with oral BPs in this population. The aim of our study was to investigate patient reported compliance and toxicity of these drugs in a retrospective cohort study. Patients and methods 413 patient were identified as receiving adjuvant oral BPs as part of their breast cancer treatment in the past 12 months from five NHS hospitals. The validated Osteoporosis Patient Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (OPSAT-Q) was sent to all suitable patients (n = 389). Results 295 (76%) of patients responded. Average age was median (range) 67 (35–89). The majority of patients had T1 (52%), N0 (61%) grade 2 (58%) ER positive (87%), HER2 negative (84%) breast cancer and were PM at diagnosis of breast cancer (93%). All patients had been prescribed at least 1 month of oral ibandronate 50 mg daily. Review of items rated on the 7-point scale (1 = very dissatisfied to 7 = very satisfied), the mean item scores ranged from 5.0 (lowest) for time required to take oral BPs, to 6.1 (highest) for how easy it is to remember to take the medication. <10% of patients were extremely bothered by heartburn or stomach upset. 16% of responders stopped oral BPs with 10% of those converting onto IV BPs. Conclusions Prevalence of severe side effects in a ‘real world’ population of PM women receiving adjuvant BPs is low and these drugs are generally well accepted and tolerated by patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Until recently, people with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) had a very poor prognosis. New treatment approaches have prolonged the time that people with MBC live, but their quality of life has received less attention. Consequently, the needs and concerns across financial, vocational, psychological, social, and physical domains in MBC patients are poorly understood-particularly regarding the collateral damage or longer-term, life-altering impacts of MBC and its treatments. This study's aims were to characterize MBC-related collateral damage, identify groups most likely to experience collateral damage, and examine its associations with psychological health, illness management, and health behaviors. METHODS Participants (N = 515) with MBC were recruited from Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation's Army of Women® and other advocacy organizations. Participants completed questionnaires of MBC-related collateral damage, depressive symptoms, anxiety, self-efficacy for managing oncologic treatments and physical symptoms, sleep, and physical activity. RESULTS Eight domains of MBC-related collateral damage, as well as MBC-related benefit finding, were reliably characterized. Concerns about mortality/uncertainty were most prominent. Participants also endorsed high levels of benefit finding. Participants younger than 50 years, with limited financial resources, or with children under 18 at home reported the most collateral damage. Collateral damage was associated significantly with compromised psychological health, lower illness management efficacy, and poorer health behaviors, beyond sociodemographic and medical characteristics. CONCLUSIONS Subgroups of MBC patients report long-term, life-altering consequences of MBC and its treatments, which relate to important health outcomes. Clinical implications and recommendations are discussed.

Abstract
Bone metastases are common in patients with advanced solid tumors, and many individuals experience debilitating skeletal-related events (SREs; e.g. pathologic fracture, hypercalcemia, radiotherapy or surgery to bone, and spinal cord compression). These events substantially affect disease outcomes, including survival and quality of life, and healthcare systems. Plain radiography is the most widely used imaging modality for the detection of bone metastases; skeletal scintigraphy, computed tomography, positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging offer greater sensitivity but their use in routine practice is restricted by high costs and limited availability. Biomarkers of bone turnover may also have a role in the early detection of bone metastases and can provide valuable prognostic information on disease progression. SREs can be delayed or prevented using agents such as the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) inhibitor, denosumab, and bisphosphonates. Painful bone metastases can be treated with radiofrequency ablation, radiotherapy, or radionuclides such as radium-223 dichloride, which has been shown to delay the onset of SREs in men with castration-resistant prostate cancer. Close monitoring of bone health in patients with advanced cancer may lead to early identification of individuals with bone metastases who could benefit from early intervention to prevent SREs. This review examines current guideline recommendations for assessing and monitoring bone health in patients with advanced cancer, use of biomarkers and treatment of patients with bone metastases. The emerging evidence for the potential survival benefit conferred by early intervention with denosumab and bisphosphonates is also discussed, together with best practice recommendations.

Abstract
Aims To investigate age-related persistence with bisphosphonates (BIS) in women with breast cancer (BC) and bone metastases. Methods We included a dataset of 1541 patients diagnosed with BC and bone metastases and initially treated with BIS between 1994 and 2013. The primary outcome measure was the age-related rate of BIS discontinuation within 12 months after treatment initiation. Therapy discontinuation was defined as a period of at least 90 days without treatment. A multivariate Cox regression model was created to determine the influence of age on the risk of discontinuation. Health insurance coverage (private/statutory), type of care (gynecological/general), region (West/East Germany), depression, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, pain medication, antidepressants, and the number of co-medications were included as covariates. Results The mean ages in the group of women <70 and that of women ≥70 years of age were 55.7 (SD: 9.8) and 76.7 (SD: 5.1) years respectively. Within 12 months after treatment initiation, 44.3% of women <70 and 34.8% of women ≥70 had terminated treatment (p-value<0.001). Patients aged ≥70 were at a lower risk of treatment discontinuation than patients <70 (HR=0.78, 95% CI: 0.67–0.91). Furthermore, treatment in gynecological practices, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, pain medication, and number of co-medications decreased the risk of discontinuation. By contrast, residing in West Germany and private health insurance coverage increased discontinuation risk. Conclusions Women with metastatic BC aged ≥70 are at a lower risk of BIS treatment discontinuation than younger women.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study is to analyze the use of antidepressants in German patients with and without cancer. METHODS This study included patients with cancer diagnosed with depression in German neuropsychiatric practices between 2004 and 2013. Each patient was matched for age, gender, health insurance, physician, and index year with a depressed, cancer-free control. The share of patients and controls receiving medical therapy within 1 year after depression diagnosis and the proportion of subjects treated with tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or benzodiazepines were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 604 depressed cancer patients and 604 depressed controls were included. There are 27.6% of patients that had breast cancer, 13.3% malignant neoplasms of the lymphoid or hematopoietic tissue, 12.5% brain tumors, 8.3% prostate cancer, and 10.0% cancer of the digestive organs. After 1 year of follow up, 66.5% of patients and 72.8% of controls had received antidepressant drugs (p = 0.017). Tricyclic antidepressants was given less frequently to patients than to controls (31.2% vs 38.2%, p-value = 0.011). By contrast, 7.0% of patients with cancer and 4.2% of controls received benzodiazepines (p-value = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS The use of antidepressants in Germany is less common in patients with cancer and depression than in people with depression only. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
SUMMARY Although all aspects of breast cancer care rely to some extent on patient behaviors, the endocrine therapies, which are orally administered at home, are the most impacted by nonadherence and nonpersistence. A variety of issues can interfere with a breast cancer patient's adherence and persistence including the following: sociodemographic factors; healthcare team and system-related factors (such as inadequate visit time and poor medication distribution services); condition-related factors (such as prognosis); therapy-related factors (such as side effects); and patient-related factors (such as attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and expectations). In our review, we describe evidence regarding the most powerful factors mediating adherence and persistence in breast cancer patients, and explore potential interventions to reduce nonadherence and nonpersistence, primarily based on data in patients taking adjuvant endocrine therapy.

Abstract
The recent progress in oncologic management of patients with localized cancer or metastatic disease has permitted a significant improvement in life expectancy. Nevertheless, bone metastases and their consequent skeletal-related events (SREs) are still associated with unfavorable prognosis and greatly affect quality of life. Global management of these bone metastases includes traditional local approaches (surgery, radiotherapy, etc.) and systemic administration of chemotherapeutic agents. This review focuses on treatments specific for bone metastases and, in particular, on inhibitors of bone resorption that are effective for preventing and delaying the development of SREs.
