Abstract
Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor. While preliminary data point to the positive effects of rehabilitation for patients with glioblastoma, there are unique challenges for clinicians working with this population, including limited life expectancy and/or rapid neurological deterioration. The aim of this article is to review the literature on rehabilitation of adults with glioblastoma, including the feasibility of interventions, their effectiveness, as well as the current clinical practice. The reviewed literature suggests that rehabilitation has been found beneficial for improving the functional prognosis and quality of life of adults with glioblastoma and is desired by patients. We summarize the qualitative evidence regarding healthcare professionals' and patients' perspectives on the use of supportive care services. We conclude there is a need for the design of effective rehabilitation programs for patients with glioblastoma, as well as for the development of glioblastoma-specific clinical guidelines for rehabilitation practitioners.

Abstract
Sarcopenia has been identified as a prognostic factor among certain types of cancer. However, it is unclear whether there is prognostic value of temporalis muscle thickness (TMT), a potential surrogate for sarcopenia, in adults patients with brain tumors. Therefore, we searched the Medline, Embase, and PubMed to systematically review and meta-analyze the relationship between TMT and overall survival, progression-free survival, and complications in patients with brain tumors and the hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratios (OR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) were evaluated. The quality in prognostic studies (QUIPS) instrument was employed to evaluate study quality. Nineteen studies involving 4570 patients with brain tumors were included for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Meta-analysis revealed thinner TMT was associated with poor overall survival (HR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.45-2.04; P < 0.01) in patients with brain tumors. Sub-analyses showed that the association existed for both primary brain tumors (HR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.55-2.63) and brain metastases (HR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.30-1.49). Moreover, thinner TMT also was the independent predictor of progression-free survival in patients with primary brain tumors (HR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.85-4.46; P < 0.01). Therefore, to improve clinical decision making it is important to integrate TMT assessment into routine clinical settings in patients with brain tumors.

Abstract
Working memory, language and speech abilities, motor skills, and visual abilities are often impaired in children with brain tumours. This is because tumours can invade the brain's functional areas and cause alterations to the neuronal networks. However, it is unclear what the mechanism of tumour invasion is and how various treatments can cause cognitive impairment. Therefore, this study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of tumour invasion on the cognitive, language, motor, and visual abilities of paediatric patients, as well as discuss the alterations and modifications in neuronal networks and anatomy. The electronic database, PubMed, was used to find relevant studies. The studies were systematically reviewed based on the type and location of brain tumours, cognitive assessment, and pre- and post-operative deficits experienced by patients. Sixteen studies were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria following the guidelines from PRISMA. Most studies agree that tumour invasion in the brain causes cognitive dysfunction and alteration in patients. The effects of a tumour on cognition, language, motor, and visual abilities depend on the type of tumour and its location in the brain. The alteration to the neuronal networks is also dependent on the type and location of the tumour. However, the default mode network (DMN) is the most affected network, regardless of the tumour type and location.Furthermore, our findings suggest that different treatment types can also contribute to patients' cognitive function to improve or deteriorate. Deficits that persisted or were acquired after surgery could result from surgical manipulation or the progression of the tumour's growth. Meanwhile, recovery from the deficits indicated that the brain has the ability to recover and reorganise itself.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is recommended that people with gliomas engage in rehabilitation, but high-quality evidence to support this recommendation is lacking. OBJECTIVE This study assesses the effectiveness of a physical therapy- and occupational therapy-based rehabilitation intervention compared with usual rehabilitation care for quality of life (QoL) during active anticancer treatment. DESIGN This study was a randomized controlled trial. SETTING The study took place in Odense University Hospital, Denmark. PARTICIPANTS The trial included people with gliomas who were functionally independent. INTERVENTION The participants were randomly assigned to a supervised rehabilitation intervention or usual rehabilitation care during the active anticancer period. The supervised rehabilitation included physical therapy and occupational therapy-based interventions. MEASUREMENTS The primary outcome was the between-group difference in the overall QoL from baseline to the 6-week follow-up. It was self-rated with the global health status (GHS)/QoL domains from the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Questionnaire. Eighty-eight participants per group were required to find a 10% between-group difference from baseline to the 6-week follow-up. Secondary outcomes were the health-related QoL domains, symptomatology, and functional performance. RESULTS A total of 64 participants were included (32 in the intervention group and 32 in the control group). At follow-up, the intervention group self-rated a nonsignificantly better score for GHS/QoL than the control group (adjusted mean difference = 8.7% [95% confidence interval = -4.36 to 21.79]). Compared with the control group, the intervention group had consistently better results on self-rated secondary outcomes, including cognitive functioning (β = 16.2) and fatigue (β = -13.4), and objectively measured aerobic power (β = 2.6). LIMITATIONS The number of participants and duration of follow-up were inadequate to determine if the intervention was superior to the current usual rehabilitation care. CONCLUSIONS The physical therapy- and occupational therapy-based rehabilitation intervention did not affect GHS/QoL. However, the trial found promising significant effects on both objective and self-reported secondary outcomes, making rehabilitation efforts during active anticancer treatment promising.

Abstract
PURPOSE To inform high-quality rehabilitation services, this study investigates if patients with glioma located in the right- or left-hemisphere present with different health-related quality of life, symptomatology, and functional performance in the early disease state. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between 2013 and 2017, 81 adult patients were assessed during the first week of chemo-radiation, following resection. Patients were stratified into two groups depending on a right- or left-hemispheric lesion. Independent t-tests analyzed potential differences regarding health-related quality of life, symptomatology, and functional performance. RESULTS Forty-five patients (56%) had a tumor located in the right hemisphere, whereas 36 patients (44%) had a tumor in the left hemisphere. Except for more patients with tumors in the left hemisphere having their tumor located in eloquent brain areas, the groups were well matched. No group differences were found in health-related quality of life. Group differences were found in communication deficits (Δ-10.9, 95%CI -19.1; -2.3, p = 0.01), which were more frequent in patients with left-sided lesions, and of headaches (Δ13.9, 95%CI 1.8; 25.9, p = 0.02), which were more frequent in patients with right-hemispheric lesions, who also had significantly greater difficulties with process-skills when performing everyday life tasks (Δ-0.3, 95%CI -0.5; -0.1, p < 0.01). Also, weak evidence suggests that patients with Glioblastoma Multiforme located in the right hemisphere are more affected by fatigue compared to their left-hemispheric comparisons (Δ14.6, 95%CI 0.19; 29.0, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The hemispheric location of a glial-cell brain tumor has no consequence for health-related quality of life at the beginning of chemo-radiation treatments. However, findings of tumor-location dependent conditions of communication, headache, patients' ability to perform executive functions, and fatigue should be considered in rehabilitation situations when designing an intervention to potentially improve executive functions and relieve the symptoms.Implications for rehabilitationIt is unclear if laterality impact glioma patients health-related quality of life and functional performance, which might implicate differentiated rehabilitation interventions.The hemispheric location of a glial-cell brain tumor has no consequence for the health-related quality of life at the beginning of chemo-radiation, following surgery.Tumor-location dependent conditions of communication, headache, fatigue, and patients' ability to perform executive functions should be considered when designing an intervention to improve executive functions and symptom-relieve.In rehabilitation interventions, tumor laterality is not a factor that needs to be considered before recommending aerobic training to improve the functional capacity of patients with glioma.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this pilot study was to describe the acceptance and feasibility of an exercise intervention in breast cancer patients of Turkish origin in Austria by using a hand-held swinging-ring system.Methods: The inclusion period lasted 1 year (1 February 2016-31 January 2017). In a multicentre cooperation, Turkish female breast cancer patients were included by using face-to-face information, email, facebook®, phone, and notice boards. The exercise program consisted of 1) supervised and 2) home-based exercise by using the smovey® vibroswing system. Feasibility and acceptance were assessed by using the Austrian school grading system and a qualitative approach after 3 months. Furthermore, the six-minute walk test (6MWT), handgrip strength, body composition (BIA), and health-related quality of life (QOL) were assessed at baseline (T0) and after 3 months (T1).Results: Only 5 breast cancer patients could be included, from whom one dropped out due to breast cancer recurrence. The exercise intervention showed no side effects and was well accepted by all 4 patients. Furthermore, results of the 6MWT, handgrip strength, BIA, and QOL improved.Conclusion: These results indicate notable barriers towards regular physical activity in female Turkish breast cancer patients in Austria. Four out of five of those involved were comfortable with the intervention. Therefore, it seems to be essential to further address these barriers in order to plan and implement effective interventions.Implications for RehabilitationExercise is an effective means of improving health and quality of life experienced by female patients suffering from breast cancer.Although extensive efforts were taken only a minority of Turkish female patients attended a structured exercise program.It seems to be essential to further address barriers to exercise in order to plan and implement effective interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND So far, the development and course of therapy-induced deficiencies in hypothalamic-pituitary hormones in adult patients with malignant gliomas has not received much attention. However, such deficiencies may impact patient's quality of life substantially. METHODS In this monocentric longitudinal trial, we examined hormonal levels of TSH, T3, T4, fT3, fT4, FSH, LH, testosterone, estradiol and prolactin in patients with malignant high grade gliomas before the start of radiochemotherapy (RCT), at the end of RCT and then every three months for newly diagnosed patients and every six months in patients diagnosed more than two years before study inclusion. Growth hormone was not measured in this trial. RESULTS 436 patients (198 female, 238 male) with high-grade gliomas, aged 19-83 years (median 50 years), were included in this study. Low levels of thyroid hormones were observed in around 10% of patients within the first six months of follow up and increasingly after 36 months. Half of premenopausal women at study entry developed premature menopause, 35% showed hyperprolactinemia. Low testosterone levels were measured in 37% of men aged less than 50 years and in 35/63 (55%) of men aged 50 years or older. DISCUSSION The results of this study show that a significant percentage of patients with malignant gliomas develop hormonal deficiencies mandating regular clinical follow up, state of the art counseling and if clinically necessary substitution therapy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This case report describes the rationale and development of an exercise intervention in a patient with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM ) and discusses potential relations of observed effects in functional performance and quality of life (QOL). METHODS A 54-year-old GBM survivor completed a supervised six-week exercise intervention during irradiation treatment beginning 42 d after resection. Exercise modalities of cardiorespiratory, resistance, and balance training were designed on generic recommendations of various cancer populations and literature review. RESULTS Our case attended all possible sessions without experiencing adverse effects, and improved in aerobe power (24%), muscle strength (0-38%), standing balance (71%), walking ability (9%), and QOL domains of "Global Health Status/QoL" and "Physical functioning." CONCLUSIONS Based on this single case, exercise rehabilitation has the ability to maintain or improve functional performance and QOL domains even during heavy treatments. It also implies that patients with GBM are capable and may be willing to participate in exercise rehabilitation if supervised by physical therapists. Implications for rehabilitation The use of exercise as part of rehabilitation still needs attention in strong methodology studies of patients with gliomas. Exercise rehabilitation may maintain or even improve functional performance and QOL domains during medical treatment regimens. Functional independent patients with GBM are capable to comply with generic exercise recommendations and may be willing to participate in exercise rehabilitation if supervised by physical therapists.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to evaluate compliance with and safety of a novel independent home exercise program for patients with high-grade brain tumors. We designed this program around the preferences and individual capabilities of this population as well as the potential barriers to exercise in cancer patients. Demographics were collected to better understand those that persisted with exercise. METHODS Subjects with high-grade brain tumor received one-time training that included watching an exercise video and live demonstration of resistance band exercises, a balance exercise, and recommendations for walking. Subjects were instructed to do the exercises every day for 1 month. Main outcome measures were percentage of subjects who exercised throughout the month, frequency of exercising, demographic factors, quality of life scores (assessed by FACT-BR), and self report of adverse events. RESULTS Fourteen of the 15 (93%) subjects started the exercises during the course of the month. Nine of the fifteen (60%) continued the exercises throughout the month. Three additional subjects would have continued to exercise if formal or supervised rehabilitation had been offered. Among the subjects who continued the exercises regularly, higher frequency of exercising was significantly associated with living as married (p = 0.033), annual income >$50,000 (p = 0.047), scores of physical well-being (p = 0.047), and brain cancer specific well-being (p = 0.054) subscales. Among those who exercised frequently, there was also a trend towards increase in total FACT-BR scores (p = 0.059). The subjects who scored higher on the social well-being subscale of the FACT-BR at baseline self-reported a higher likelihood to continue the exercises after 1 month of participation in the study (p = 0.018). No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS Our small group of subjects with high-grade brain tumors demonstrated compliance with and safety of a novel independent strength and balance exercise program in the home setting. Higher frequency of exercising was associated with life quality parameters as well as marriage and income.

Abstract
PURPOSE Not all oncology patients and their family caregivers (FCs) experience the same quality of life (QOL). The purposes of this study were to identify latent classes of oncology patients (n = 168) and their FCs (n = 85) with distinct physical, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being trajectories from prior to through 4 months after the completion of radiation therapy and to evaluate for demographic, clinical, and genetic characteristics that distinguished between these latent classes. METHODS Using growth mixture modeling, two latent classes were found for three (i.e., physical, psychological, and social well-being) of the four QOL domains evaluated. RESULTS Across these three domains, the largest percentage of participants reported relatively high well-being scores across the 6 months of the study. Across these three QOL domains, patients and FCs who were younger, female, belonged to an ethnic minority group, had children at home, had multiple comorbid conditions, or had a lower functional status, were more likely to be classified in the lower QOL class. The social well-being domain was the only domain that had a polymorphism in nuclear factor kappa beta 2 (NFKB2) associated with latent class membership. Carrying one or two doses of the rare allele for rs7897947 was associated with a 54 % decrease in the odds of belonging to the lower social well-being class [OR (95 % CI) = .46 (.21, .99), p = .049]. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that a number of phenotypic and molecular characteristics contribute to differences in QOL in oncology patients and their FCs.

Abstract
In Austria, cancer rehabilitation is an important issue in the management of cancer patients. Survival rates and survival time of cancer patients are increasing, and cancer rehabilitation is an important part in the treatment and care of cancer patients with the goal to improve functional status, quality of life, and (social) participation. Today, in Austria there are approximately 600 beds for inpatient rehabilitation. The field of outpatient rehabilitation will maybe be expanded after evaluating the existing pilot projects. Beside other specialities, the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) plays an important role in cancer rehabilitation. In cancer rehabilitation, especially activating modalities from PM&R such as exercise are very important and well-accepted parts to improve functional status, quality of life, and participation of patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Aim of this pilot study was to describe feasibility and acceptance of an exercise intervention by using an unique swinging-ring system with the goal to promote long-term exercise behaviour in cancer patients. METHODS The included cancer patients (n = 13, male:f emale (m:f) = 7:6, age = 56 ± 11, range 38-74a) were invited to perform a home-based exercise intervention. All participants of this pilot study were instructed how to use the smovey® Vibroswing. They could choose how to use the swinging-ring system, for example only indoor or only outdoor (single or in a group) or both. Feasibility and acceptance were assessed after 12 months (T2). Handgrip strength (Jamar hand dynamometer) and health-related quality of life (QOL, SF-36 Health survey) were assessed at baseline (T1) and after 12 months (T2). RESULTS A total of 10 (77%) patients (m:f = 5:5, 59 ± 9 years, range = 46-74) could be assessed at baseline and after 12 months. The exercise intervention showed no adverse events and was well accepted. Approximately 77% of patients of the study population have been exercising for more than 12 months. Furthermore, this intervention was able to increase handgrip strength in the participants. QOL improved as well in all domains. CONCLUSIONS The results of this small pilot study indicate that regular physical exercise with this swinging-ring system seems to be safe, and to promote long-term exercise behaviour of the included patients. Furthermore, this study population showed benefits in terms of increased handgrip strength and of improved QOL.

Abstract
Motor deficits, including unilateral or bilateral weakness, plegia, ataxia, spasticity, and loss of complex movement execution, can occur during any brain tumor illness. Tumor location, treatment effects, and medications contribute to these deficits. Motor dysfunction has been associated with significant deterioration in health-related quality of life in patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors. Significant decrease in median overall survival has been reported in patients with motor deficits, although the reasons for this are unclear. Motor deficits, particularly gait impairment, contribute to significant symptom burden at end of life, and are the most common reasons for initiation of hospice care. Interventions must focus on prevention and amelioration of motor dysfunction throughout the disease course in order to preserve quality of life. The impact of exercise in prolonging survival and improving quality of life requires further study.

Abstract
The diagnosis of a high-grade glioma usual is followed by functional impairment(s), cognitive decline and an impaired psycho-social well-being. This might well have a significant and negative impact on the health related quality of life. The purpose of this study was to explore physical activity levels, prevalence and severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms and health-related quality of life among patients with a highgrade glioma. This paper is based on a longitudinal mixed methods study. Patients (n = 30) completed questionnaires at 5 time points from time of diagnosis until the final follow-up after 1 year. Scores of Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), physical activity, anxiety and depression and health-related quality of life (FACT-Br) are obtained. Patients' physical activity level and KPS decrease during the disease- and treatment trajectory. The majority of patients did not report any depressive symptoms, eight individuals (26.7 %) being depressed at various time points. Among a sub-group of participants who completed all study requirements for the entire study period the level of anxiety decreased significantly during the study. The FACT-Br sub-scale of emotional well-being increased significant, indicating a better HRQOL attend of followup. The diagnosis of a HGG leads to an ongoing functional decline measured as a decline of the KPS and a reduced physical activity during leisure time. Supportive care combined with rehabilitative and palliative approaches might well be valuable along the trajectory especially during the post-surgery period when anxiety is at its highest peak.
