Abstract
Non-pharmacological approaches to managing symptoms and side effects of cancer treatments are not always aligned with true needs and characteristics of patients. Without proactive patient-tailored interventions to anticipate, prevent, and manage side effects, risk of patients experiencing treatment interruption or discontinuation increases. A targeted literature review identified published studies evaluating the impact of tailored (customized based on individual patient characteristics) non-pharmacological interventions on patient outcomes in oncology versus routine care (usual clinical practice), enhanced care (support beyond routine care, including additional patient education, psychological support, and medication tracking), or uniform engagement (non-tailored support offered in a uniform manner). Thirty completed clinical studies were included. Approximately 50% of interventions across studies were remote health education/self-management programs, and the remaining provided clinical follow-up for symptom management. All types of tailored intervention led to positive patient outcomes versus routine care. Significant improvements were seen in favor of self-efficacy for self-management (patient's belief in their ability to manage own symptoms and treatment; p < 0.05) and symptom burden (overall as well as specific symptoms including anxiety, nausea, vomiting; all p < 0.05), although there were inconsistent effects on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), healthcare resource utilization (HCRU), and adherence. Compared with enhanced care, most studies showed no consistent improvement for tailored interventions in symptom burden, self-efficacy, HRQoL, HCRU or adherence, although benefits were slightly more common in larger/longer studies. Tailored interventions were not consistently better than uniform engagement in improving outcomes, although the number of studies was limited, with small sample sizes/short follow-ups. In summary, tailored interventions showed positive benefits versus routine or enhanced care (the latter only in larger and longer studies). No consistent benefit was observed compared with uniform engagement. Clinical outcomes were most sensitive to type of intervention. Tools to both enhance and measure the process should be routinely incorporated in clinical trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgery is used widely for cancer treatment, and in most types, after discharge, patients usually report multiple symptoms, which, if not controlled, can put postoperative recovery at risk. Understanding which patient-reported outcomes (PROs) should be monitored could have a significant impact on reducing the symptom burden associated with cancer and its treatment by playing a pivotal role in developing symptom self-management plans and designing tailored approaches to optimize patients' symptom self-management behaviors. OBJECTIVE To map the PROs used for patients' postsurgical symptom self-management after hospital discharge following cancer surgery. INTERVENTIONS/METHODS Our scoping review process was guided by the steps for conducting scoping reviews recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute. RESULTS The search identified 97 potentially relevant studies, with 27 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The most frequently assessed and monitored PROs were problems with surgical wounds, more general physical symptoms, psychological functioning outcomes, and quality of life. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed an overall uniformity among the PROs selected to be monitored in surgical cancer patients after hospital discharge. Monitoring through electronic platforms is widely used and seems useful to self-manage symptoms and optimize the recovery of cancer patients after discharge following surgery. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This study provides knowledge about PROs that can be applied in oncologic patients after surgery to self-report their symptoms following discharge.

Abstract
Objective To systematically understand the research frontiers, hotspots and development trends of exercise therapy in the intervention of tumor-related sleep-wake disorders, and to provide scientific basis for follow-up research. Methods Downloaded the original research papers on February 26, 2024, from the Web of Science core collection database, on tumor-associated sleep-wake disorders. The data that met the inclusion criteria were imported into the Bibliometric Analysis Platform (http://biblimetric.com), CiteSpace 6.3.R1 and VOSviwer1.6.20 software for visual analysis, and imported into Excel2021. Scientometric analysis was performed with Oringin2021 and PyCharm Community Edition 2022.1.3. Results A total of 512 original research papers on tumor-related sleep-wake disorders were obtained. The most influential countries in the subject area are the United States, Spain and German, the institutions are the University of California System, Sun Yat Sen University and Northwestern University, et al., the authors are Berger AM, Aaronson NK, Bower JE, et al., and the journals are Cancer, Brit J Cancer and Cancer Nurs. The co-cited references suggest that the current research frontier in the field mainly involves the level, place and program of exercise therapy, including the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behavior and cancer prevention and control. The results of co-occurrence keyword network analysis showed that quality of life, physical activity, breast cancer, exercise, fatigue, and survivors may be the research hotspots in this field, with breast cancer, health, aerobic exercise, adults, and chemotherapy being the most popular. Conclusions The number of papers published and the research enthusiasm in this field show a steady upward trend. However, there is a lack of influential institutions and scholars, and there is relatively little research collaboration across countries/regions/institutions. The scientific research influence of institutions and scholars in most European and American countries/regions is significantly ahead of that of institutions and scholars in Asian and African countries/regions. But Sun Yat Sen University in China is a relatively active and influential scientific research institution in recent years, which is worthy of attention. In addition, the research frontier of this discipline is the level, place and program of exercise therapy auxiliary intervention, and the research hotspots involve breast cancer, health, aerobic exercise, adults, chemotherapy, et al. Their clinical efficacy needs to be further demonstrated in multi-center, large-sample and high-quality prospective studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effectiveness of ePRO-based symptom management interventions on symptom burden, quality of life, and overall survival among patients with cancer for the first time and to explore the effects of different types of these interventions. BACKGROUND Since advances in screening and treatment have transformed cancer into a chronic illness rather than a fatal disease, symptom management has become increasingly critical in oncology nursing. In recent decades, ePROs have been increasingly used in the symptom management of cancer patients to improve their symptom burden, quality of life and overall survival, but the existing findings are still inconsistent and equivocal. METHODS A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web-of-Science, CENTRAL, and CINAHL-Plus-with-Full-Text from inception to January 31, 2023. The quality of methodology and evidence were evaluated by the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation framework. All data were analyzed using R within the RStudio platform, and the effects of interventions were determined by calculating SMD, HR and 95 %CI. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis and cumulative meta-analysis were performed, and statistical heterogeneity was examined by I2 statistic, P value, and Egger's or arcsine test. Statistical significance was defined as a two-tailed P value <0.05. RESULTS A total of 23 randomized controlled trials with 7231 patients were included. The results indicated that ePRO-based symptom management interventions could improve the symptom burden (SMD = -0.19, 95 % CI [-0.33, -0.05], P < 0.01), quality of life (SMD = 0.16, 95 % CI [0.06, 0.25], P < 0.01) and overall survival (HR = 0.84, 95 % CI [0.73, 0.97], P = 0.02) of cancer patients. Subgroup analysis showed that targeted interventions for patients undergoing specific treatments were effective in relieving the symptom burden and enhancing quality of life. Short-term (≤3 months) interventions or reporting via telephone call contributed to alleviating the symptom burden, while quality of life improved when the intervention was more than three months in duration or not reported by telephone call. The pooled results of symptom burden and quality of life were stable, and the beneficial trends of all three outcomes were steady. The overall quality of methodology and evidence was moderate. CONCLUSIONS We found that ePRO-based symptom management interventions are conducive to improving symptom burden, quality of life, and overall survival of cancer patients. In addition to encouraging the integration of ePRO-based interventions into routine oncology care, interventions with tailored plans, proper intensity and multidimensional supports need to be developed in the future to optimize the symptom management of cancer patients. Enhanced supportive care for advanced cancer patients: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial. BMC Nurs 2022; 21:338. Abstract
BACKGROUND Early palliative care along with standard cancer treatments is recommended in current clinical guidelines to improve the quality of life and survival of cancer patients. This study protocol aims to evaluate the effect of "Enhanced Supportive Care", an early primary palliative care provided by nurses. METHODS A randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted including advanced cancer patients scheduled for first-line palliative chemotherapy (N=360) and their caregivers in South Korea. Participants will be randomly assigned to the intervention or control group in a 1:1 ratio. Participants in the intervention group will receive the "Enhanced Supportive Care", which provides five sessions of symptom management and coping enhancement counseling by nurses. The control group will receive symptom monitoring five times. The primary endpoints are symptoms, coping, and quality of life (QoL) at 3 months. Secondary endpoints are symptoms, coping, and QoL at 6 months, depression and self-efficacy for coping with cancer at 3 and 6 months, symptom and depression change from baseline to 3 months, survival at 6 and 12 months among patients, and depression among caregivers at 3 and 6 months. DISCUSSION This RCT will evaluate the effects of "Enhanced Supportive Care" on symptoms, depression, coping, self-efficacy for coping with cancer, QoL and survival of patients, as well as depression of caregivers. It will provide evidence of a strategy to implement early primary palliative care provided by nurses, which may consequently improve cancer care for newly diagnosed patients with advanced stage cancer. Abstract
Electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) applications promise great added value for improving symptom management and health-related quality of life. The aim of this narrative review is to describe the collection and use of ePROs for cancer survivorship care, with an emphasis on ePRO-symptom monitoring. It offers many different perspectives from research settings, while current implementation in routine care is ongoing. ePRO collection optimizes survivorship care by providing insight into the patients' well-being and prioritizing their unmet needs during the whole trajectory from diagnosis to end-of-life. ePRO-symptom monitoring can contribute to timely health risk detection and subsequently allow earlier intervention. Detection is optimized by automatically generated alerts that vary from simple to complex and multilayered. Using ePRO-symptoms during in-hospital consultation enhances the patients' conversation with the health care provider before making informed decisions about treatments, other interventions, or self-management. ePRO(-symptoms) entail specific implementation issues and complementary ethics considerations. The latter is due to privacy concerns, digital divide, and scarcity of adequately representative data for particular groups of patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the relationships among cancer therapy-related symptom occurrence and severity, selected cancer-related variables, and demographic variables. Secondary purposes were to examine participants' reported symptom occurrence and severity by ethnicity and by age group and to identify self-care methods. SAMPLE & SETTING Convenience sampling was used and included 110 adults receiving cancer treatment from a major hospital in the northeast region of the United States. METHODS & VARIABLES A descriptive correlational design was used. Study variables were symptom occurrence and severity and selected demographic and cancer-related variables. The Therapy-Related Symptom Checklist was used to measure symptom occurrence and severity, and the Symptom Alleviation. RESULTS Significant relationships were found between symptom occurrence and severity and gender, economic status, and disease stage. Feeling sluggish was the most frequently reported symptom. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Oncology nurses are in an influential position to educate and manage participants' cancer therapy-related symptoms.

Abstract
CONTEXT The existence of stable symptom clusters with variations or changes in cluster membership and the merging of symptom clusters over time urge us to investigate how symptom relationships change over time. OBJECTIVES To identify stable symptom clusters and understand networks among symptoms using longitudinal data. METHODS Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from a nonblinded randomized clinical trial, which evaluated the effect and feasibility of the developed cancer symptom management system. For the present study, data from all participants of the original trial were analyzed (N = 249). The severity of 20 symptoms was measured before the start of chemotherapy (CTx) and during the initial four cycles of CTx. Symptom clusters were identified using principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses, and network analysis was used to explore the relationships among symptoms. RESULTS Three common symptom clusters were identified. The first cluster consisted of anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, pain, and dyspnea. Fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and drowsiness formed a second stable cluster throughout the CTx cycles. The third cluster comprised loss of appetite, taste change, nausea, and vomiting. In terms of the symptom networks, close relationships were recognized, irrespective of symptom severity level, between anxiety and depression, fatigue and drowsiness, and loss of appetite and taste change. Fatigue was the most central symptom with the highest strength. Edge thickening after starting CTx demonstrated evolving symptom networks in relation to CTx cycles. CONCLUSION Stable symptom clusters and evolving networks were identified. The most central symptom was fatigue; however, the paucity of studies that investigated symptom networks and central symptoms calls for further investigations on these phenomena. Identification of central symptoms and underlying mechanisms will guide efficient symptom management. Future studies will need to focus on developing comprehensive interventions for managing symptom clusters or targeting central symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the relationship between health literacy and illness self-care management in individuals with cancer. SAMPLE & SETTING 207 individuals with cancer undergoing treatment in the chemotherapy unit of a university hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. METHODS & VARIABLES Data were collected using a sociodemographic and illness characteristics questionnaire, the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire-Turkish Version (HLS-EU-Q-TR), and the Self-Care Management Process in Chronic Illness. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, student t test, Pearson correlation test, and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS 86% of individuals displayed an inadequate or problematic to limited level of health literacy. Extended family status and HLS-EU-Q-TR score were significant predictors of self-care management. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Nurses can organize health programs designed to improve the level of health literacy in the population, but they should take into consideration the health literacy levels of their patients.
