Detection method based on a coupled illumination correction algorithm for the detection of surface defects in ZrO2 ceramic bearing balls

To address the problem of feature texture loss in defective images of zirconia bearing balls on unbalanced illumination backgrounds, a coupled algorithm of the local gamma function transform-block interpolation balancing equation is designed. A combination of a light reflection imaging model and a three-dimensional Gaussian surround function is used to extract the illumination estimate of the original image. Subsequent illumination balance correction is performed in the value color space. The contrast between the edges of the feature texture and the background is analyzed to construct a locally adaptive gamma function transformation model. We establish local block interpolation balance equations to eliminate the effects caused by illumination that is too high or too low. The experimental results show that the information entropy of the images after illumination correction changes in the range of 5% or less. The standard deviation and mean gradient can be increased by 15.21% and 14.78%, respectively.

CNN-based severity prediction of neurodegenerative diseases using gait data

Neurodegenerative diseases occur because of degeneration in brain cells but can manifest as impairment of motor functions. One of the side effects of this impairment is an abnormality in walking. With the development of sensor technologies and artificial intelligence applications in recent years, the disease severity of patients can be estimated using their gait data. In this way, decision support applications for grading the severity of the disease that the patient suffers in the clinic can be developed. Thus, patients can have treatment methods more suitable for the severity of the disease. The presented research proposes a deep learning-based approach using gait data represented by a Quick Response code to develop an effective and reliable disease severity grading system for neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and Parkinson's disease. The two-dimensional Quick Response data set was created by converting each one-dimensional gait data of the subjects with a novel representation approach to a Quick Response code. This data set was regressed with the convolutional neural network deep learning method, and a solution was sought for the problem of grading disease severity. Further, to demonstrate the success of the results obtained with the novel approach, native machine learning approaches such as Multilayer Perceptron, Random Forest, Extremely Randomized Trees, and K-Nearest Neighbours, and ensemble machine learning methods, such as voting and stacking, were applied on one-dimensional data. Finally, the results obtained on the prediction of disease severity by testing one-dimensional gait data with a convolutional neural network architecture that operates on one-dimensional data were included. The results showed that, in most cases, the two-dimensional convolutional neural network approach performed the best among all methods.

A Medical Image Registration Method Based on Progressive Images

Background

Medical image registration is an essential task for medical image analysis in various applications. In this work, we develop a coarse-to-fine medical image registration method based on progressive images and SURF algorithm (PI-SURF) for higher registration accuracy.

Methods

As a first step, the reference image and the floating image are fused to generate multiple progressive images. Thereafter, the floating image and progressive image are registered to get the coarse registration result based on the SURF algorithm. For further improvement, the coarse registration result and the reference image are registered to perform fine image registration. The appropriate progressive image has been investigated by experiments. The mutual information (MI), normal mutual information (NMI), normalized correlation coefficient (NCC), and mean square difference (MSD) similarity metrics are used to demonstrate the potential of the PI-SURF method.

Results

For the unimodal and multimodal registration, the PI-SURF method achieves the best results compared with the mutual information method, Demons method, Demons+B-spline method, and SURF method. The MI, NMI, and NCC of PI-SURF are improved by 15.5%, 1.31%, and 7.3%, respectively, while MSD decreased by 13.2% for the multimodal registration compared with the optimal result of the state-of-the-art methods.

Conclusions

The extensive experiments show that the proposed PI-SURF method achieves higher quality of registration.
