Application of Isotope Dilution to the Determination of Anthracene in Environmental Samples by Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction and Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry

Crystal violet-modified HKUST-1 framework with improved hydrostability as an efficient adsorbent for direct solid-phase microextraction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received extensive attention in adsorption applications owing to their high surface area. However, some MOFs do not perform well as the extraction medium when used under aqueous conditions. The low hydrostability of MOFs limits the practical application of these materials in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Here, the fabrication of a water resistance SPME fiber coating is introduced based on the crystal violet (CV)-modified HKUST-1 framework on copper (Cu@HKUST-1@CV). The HKUST-1 was prepared by the in situ growth method, followed by post-synthetic modification of HKUST-1 with the CV layer. The preparation of the modified HKUST-1 was characterized by FESEM, XRD, FTIR, and DFT approaches. The prepared SPME coating was successfully employed for the quantification of anthracene (AN), as a model analyte, in water samples. The limit of detection was 0.8 ng mL^-1. The developed method will open up a new door towards searching for promising materials in SPME applications.

Miniaturized sample preparation methods for saliva analysis

Saliva, as the first body fluid encountering with the exogenous materials, has good correlation with blood and plays an important role in bioanalysis. However, saliva has not been studied as much as the other biological fluids mainly due to restricted access to its large volumes. In recent years, there is a growing interest for saliva analysis owing to the emergence of miniaturized sample preparation methods. The purpose of this paper is to review all microextraction methods and their principles of operation. In the following, we examine the methods used to analyze saliva up to now and discuss the potential of the other microextraction methods for saliva analysis to encourage research groups for more focus on this important subject area.

Determination of phthalates in wine by headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Use of deuterated phthalates as internal standards

This study proposes the use of deuterated phthalates as internal standards for the accurate determination of phthalates in wine by headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Unlike other internal standards proposed previously such as benzyl benzoate, deuterated phthalates enabled matrix-error free determinations to be performed without standard addition because statistically equal slopes were obtained for synthetic, white, rose and red wines. The relative standard deviation values under intermediate precision conditions ranged from 0.24 to 4.6%, and detection limits below 35 ng L(-1) were obtained. Recovery values were around 100% in most of cases and the method provided similar results to standard addition. Finally, the method was used to screen phthalate levels in 10 wine samples.

Recent developments in headspace microextraction techniques for the analysis of environmental contaminants in different matrices

Headspace microextraction procedures such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and single drop microextraction (SDME) or liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) are increasingly used for the extraction of environmental organic pollutants from a variety of aqueous, viscous, semisolid and solid environmental and biological matrices. In this article, recent analytical applications of these methodologies when used as an isolation and trace enrichment step prior to the analysis of organic pollutants (pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated compounds, organotin compounds, phenolic derivatives, aromatic amines, phthalates, etc.) by gas and liquid chromatography are reviewed. The applicability and inherent limitations of headspace microextraction are also discussed. The future direction of research in this field and general trends toward commercial applications are considered.
