Abstract
Chemolithoautotrophic nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB) of the genus Nitrospira contribute to nitrification in diverse natural environments and engineered systems. Nitrospira are thought to be well-adapted to substrate limitation owing to their high affinity for nitrite and capacity to use alternative energy sources. Here, we demonstrate that the canonical nitrite oxidiser Nitrospira moscoviensis oxidises hydrogen (H2) below atmospheric levels using a high-affinity group 2a nickel-iron hydrogenase [Km(app) = 32 nM]. Atmospheric H2 oxidation occurred under both nitrite-replete and nitrite-deplete conditions, suggesting low-potential electrons derived from H2 oxidation promote nitrite-dependent growth and enable survival during nitrite limitation. Proteomic analyses confirmed the hydrogenase was abundant under both conditions and indicated extensive metabolic changes occur to reduce energy expenditure and growth under nitrite-deplete conditions. Thermodynamic modelling revealed that H2 oxidation theoretically generates higher power yield than nitrite oxidation at low substrate concentrations and significantly contributes to growth at elevated nitrite concentrations. Collectively, this study suggests atmospheric H2 oxidation enhances the growth and survival of NOB amid variability of nitrite supply, extends the phenomenon of atmospheric H2 oxidation to an eighth phylum (Nitrospirota), and reveals unexpected new links between the global hydrogen and nitrogen cycles. Long classified as obligate nitrite oxidisers, our findings suggest H2 may primarily support growth and survival of certain NOB in natural environments.

Abstract
This paper describes a simple, efficient and rapid analytical method for extraction and determination of nitrite in meat and chicken products by vortex-assisted supramolecular solvent-based liquid phase microextraction (VA-SUPRAS-LPME) prior to spectrophotometric detection. The SUPRAS was rapidly formed by the addition of a colloidal decanoic acid suspension to tetrahydrofuran (THF). The validation studies were carried out in terms of linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), matrix effects, robustness, uncertainty measurement, precision, accuracy, and certified reference material (CRM) analysis using optimized experimental conditions. The LOD, LOQ, linearity and matrix effect were 0.035 ng mL-1, 0.1 ng mL-1, 0.1-300 ng mL-1, and 9.6% respectively, with high preconcentration factor (200). The method was successfully applied for the determination of nitrite in processed products. Moreover, the results obtained by the proposed method were compared to the standard Griess method, and showed no significant differences in term of Student's t-test.

Abstract
In this work new designed, highly sensitive electrochemical method is developed for the determination of nitrites in tap water using glassy carbon electrode modified with graphene nanoribbons (GNs/GCE). Graphene nanoribbons (GNs) have been newly synthetized and aligned to the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for nitrite oxidation with a very high peak currents. Studies about electrochemical behavior and optimization of the most important experimental conditions were done using cyclic voltammetry (CV), while quantitative studies were done with amperometric detection. Nitrite provides a well-defined, oxidation peak at +0.9V (vs. Ag/AgCl, 3.0M KCl) in Britton-Robinson buffer solution (BRBS) at pH 3. The influence of most possible interferent ions has been examined and was found to be negligible. Under optimized experimental conditions in BRBS at pH 3 linear calibration curves were obtained in the range from 0.5 to 105µM with the detection limit of 0.22µM. Reproducibility of ten replicate measurements of 1µM of nitrite was estimated to be 1.9%. Proposed method and constructed sensor is successfully applied for the determination of nitrite present in tap water samples without any pretreatment. This developed method represents inexpensive analytical alternative approach compared to other analytical methods.
