Abstract
Sensors play vital roles in industry and healthcare due to the significance of controlling the presence of different substances in industrial processes, human organs, and the environment. Electrochemical sensors have gained more attention recently than conventional sensors, including optical fibers, chromatography devices, and chemiresistors, due to their better versatility, higher sensitivity and selectivity, and lower complexity. Herein, we review transition metal carbides (TMCs) and transition metal oxides (TMOs) as outstanding materials for electrochemical sensors. We navigate through the fabrication processes of TMCs and TMOs and reveal the relationships among their synthesis processes, morphological structures, and sensing performance. The state-of-the-art biological, gas, and hydrogen peroxide electrochemical sensors based on TMCs and TMOs are reviewed, and potential challenges in the field are suggested. This review can help others to understand recent advancements in electrochemical sensors based on transition metal oxides and carbides.

Abstract
Green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) is a viable alternative methodology because of cost-effective and availability of environmentally friendly templates for desired application, which has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years. In the present study, Co3O4 NPs were synthesized in various volume ratios in the presence of Solanum tuberosum leaf extract as a template. The synthesized Co3O4 NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), surface area electron diffraction (SAED), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. XRD analysis found that the average crystalline sizes for the 1 : 2, 1 : 1, and 2 : 1 volume ratios was 25.83, 21.05, and 27.98 nm, respectively. SEM-EDX and TEM analyses suggest that the green-synthesized Co3O4 NPs are spherical in shape without the presence of impurities. The band gap E g values of the 1 : 2, 1 : 1, and 2 : 1 volume ratios of Co3O4 NPs were found to be 1.83, 1.77, and 2.19 eV, respectively. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of various bioactive ingredients within the leaf extract of Solanum tuberosum. Co3O4 NPs-modified electrodes showed better sensing capability towards ascorbic acid and citric acid due to enhanced electron transfer kinetics. Among three volume ratios (1 : 2, 1 : 1, and 2 : 1) of Co3O4 nanoelectrodes, 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 were identified as the best performing nanoelectrodes. This is possibly due to the high catalytic behavior and the more homogenized surface structure. Co3O4 (1 : 2) nanodrug showed the enhanced antibacterial activity (16 mm) towards S. aureus which is attributed to the formation of enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Abstract
An original voltammetric sensor (Au-gr/CVE) based on a carbon veil (CV) and phytosynthesized gold nanoparticles (Au-gr) was developed for ascorbic acid (AA) determination. Extract from strawberry leaves was used as source of antioxidants (reducers) for Au-gr phytosynthesis. The sensor was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. Optimal parameters of AA determination were chosen. The sensor exhibits a linear response to AA in a wide concentration range (1 μM–5.75 mM) and a limit of detection of 0.05 μM. The developed sensor demonstrated a high intra-day repeatability of 1 μM AA response (RSD = 1.4%) and its stability during six weeks, selectivity of AA determination toward glucose, sucrose, fructose, citric, tartaric and malic acids. The proposed sensor based on Au-gr provides a higher sensitivity and a lower limit of AA detection in comparison with the sensor based on gold nanoparticles synthesized by the Turkevich method. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination of AA content in fruit juices without samples preparation. The recovery of 99%–111% and RSD no more than 6.8% confirm the good reproducibility of the juice analysis results. A good agreement with the potentiometric titration data was obtained. A correlation (r = 0.9867) between the results of AA determination obtained on the developed sensor and integral antioxidant activity of fruit juices was observed.

Abstract
The polysaccharide carboxymethyl-botryosphaeran (CMB) was used to improve the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in water. This feature was applied in modifying a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to construct a sensitive voltammetric sensor for the determination of desloratadine (DESL), a tricyclic antihistamine. The morphology and spectroscopic behavior of the sensor were evaluated. The modified sensor was characterized as homogeneous, and presented a higher electroactive area and a lower charge transfer resistance compared to the unmodified GCE. Using linear sweep voltammetry at 25 mV s-1, the developed sensor presented a sensitivity of 1.018 μA L μmol-1 in the linear working range of 1.99-32.9 μmol L-1, with a detection limit of 0.88 μmol L-1 of DESL in 0.10 mol L-1 potassium hydrogen-phosphate solution (pH 8.0). In addition, the sensor showed excellent repeatability with a relative standard deviation of only 1.02% for a sequence of 10 measurements. The sensor was successfully applied in the analysis of pharmaceutical preparations containing DESL, with equivalent results compared to a validated spectrophotometric method at the 95% confidence level. The sensor was also employed in the analysis of a spiked sample of DESL in rat serum.

Abstract
An ultra-sensitive sensor is described for the voltammetric determination of ascorbic acid (AA). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with graphene oxide (GO), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and gold nanorods (AuNRs). GO was used to prevent the aggregation of MWCNTs. The integration of positively charged AuNRs reduces the overpotential and increases the peak current of AA oxidation. Figures of merit of this sensor, typically operated at a low working potential of 0.036 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), include a low detection limit (0.85 nM), high sensitivity (7.61 μA·μM-1·cm-2) and two wide linear ranges (from 1 nM to 0.5 μM and from 1 μM to 8 mM). The use of GO simplifies the manufacture and results in a highly reproducible and stable sensor. It was applied to the quantification of AA in spiked serum. Graphical abstract Graphical abstract contains poor quality and small text inside the artwork. Please do not re-use the file that we have rejected or attempt to increase its resolution and re-save. It is originally poor, therefore, increasing the resolution will not solve the quality problem. We suggest that you provide us the original format. We prefer replacement figures containing vector/editable objects rather than embedded images. Preferred file formats are eps, ai, tiff and pdf.We have provided the original format with the attachments named g.tif. Graphene oxide (GO) in combination with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and gold nanorods (AuNRs) were used to construct a sensing interface with outstanding electrocatalytic performance for ascorbic acid detection.
