Abstract
A low-cost and environment-friendly sensor was developed for visual determination of gold ions (Au3+) by using label-free hydrogen doped molybdenum oxide (H0.3MoO3) nanoparticles as ratio probes. According to the characterization results of transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectra, Au3+ is easily reduced to red Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) by blue H0.3MoO3 nanoparticles. The color change of the solution depends on the concentration of Au3+, which makes it possible to detect Au3+ visually. Under optimal experimental conditions of pH 4.6, H0.3MoO3 nanoparticles concentration of 0.075 mg·mL-1, and reaction time of 7 min, the sensor offers a satisfactory determination range from 0.5 to 70 μM and a good determination limit of 0.45 μM for Au3+. The concentration of Au3+ as low as 10 μM can be directly distinguished through the naked eye. Additionally, the colorimetric probe has also been proved applicable in environmental water samples. More importantly, the resulting AuNPs have good stability and oxidase-like activity, which may be directly used in sensing, catalysis, energy, and other fields.

Abstract
An AND-NAND logic pair is reported based on non-purified carbon quantum dots (CDs) for ascorbic acid (AA) detection. In the logic operation, molybdenum oxide nanosheets (MoO3 NSs) and AA are used as two signal inputs. In the presence of AA, MoO3 NSs are reduced to plasmonic molybdenum oxide, which decreases the CD fluorescence intensity because of a static quenching, dynamic quenching, and internal filtration effect. Meanwhile, the AA is oxidized to dehydroascorbic acid and forms fluorescent 3-(dihydroxyethyl) furo [3,4-b] quinoxaline-1-one with o-phenylenediamine from non-purified CDs. On this basis, an AND-NAND logic pair was constructed and used as a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for highly sensitive detection of AA. The method has a wide linear range of 0.05-50 μM, and a detection limit of 34 nM. In addition, it was used to detect AA in fresh fruit. Potential applications include chemical computing, optoelectronic devices, biomedical science, and environmental monitoring. HIGHLIGHTS: 1. A ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on AND-NAND logic pair constructed by CDs and MoO3 NSs was successfully fabricated. 2. The ratiometric fluorescence sensor exhibited satisfactory linear range, high sensitivity, and good selectivity for AA. 3. The ratiometric fluorescence method was able to detect AA in fresh fruit with good results comparable to official fluorescence methods.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in the generation of smog and ozone. Although great efforts have been made to determine NO by using o-phenylenediamine (OPD)-based fluorescent probes, more simple and reliable colorimetric assays for detection of NO are extremely scarce because a single OPD structure cannot produce enough optical absorption for chromogenesis. In this study, we report an innovative two-in-one visual colorimetric methodology. Commercially available 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) with two OPD structures in a single molecule is selected as the colorimetric probe, and it reacts with NO via diazo-coupling reaction to generate 1H,3'H-[5,5']bibenzotriazolyl because of the increase of conjugated double bonds, accompanying a distinct color change from colorless to brownish yellow. This two-in-one colorimetric assay can determine NO at a concentration as low as 3 ppm by the naked eye and 40 ppb by UV-vis spectrometry, which is the lowest limit of detection (LOD) among reported colorimetric assays for NO. Moreover, the present two-in-one visual colorimetric assay also has good selectivity toward NO over other common potential gas interferents such as CO2, NO2, NH3, N2, O2, and SO2. This present study provides a new insight for the design and development of assays for NO. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
There is great interest in detection of the level of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) explosive due to its importance in public security and environmental protection fields. The conventional chemical sensors do not simultaneously realize simple, rapid, sensitive, selective, and direct detection of TNT in different medium without sample pretreatment. Here we present a modified wood-based chemical sensor for visual colorimetric detection of TNT in water, air, and soil. The natural wood undergoes a delignified process, which is further functionalized by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). When TNT solutions are introduced, the wood-based sensor shows a colorimetric transition from light yellow to brown for naked-eye readout because of the generation of Meisenheimer complex between APTES and TNT. The photographs are collected by smartphone camera, and the RGB components are extracted to calculate the adjusted intensity for qualitative detection of TNT. This visual colorimetric sensor for TNT solution displays a linearity in the range of 0.01-5 mM with a limit of detection of 3 μM. In addition, by taking advantage of its inherent mesostructure, the wood-based sensor can be employed for visual detection of TNT vapor as well. Furthermore, it is also able to directly detect TNT in wet soil samples based on capillary action, in which TNT carried by water transports upward along the wood microchannel, triggering the generation of Meisenheimer complex. Abstract
We report a single 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium ion (Acr+-Mes) as a solvatochromic sensor array for multicolor visual discrimination of solvents. The composite fluorescent response of Acr+-Mes to polarity, dispersed state, and lone-pair-π interactions produces different colors when it is dissolved in various solvents. The corresponding RGB values as sensing elements are extracted to create distinct fluorescence response patterns for each solvent. With the help of principal component analysis, common solvents, such as water (H2O), absolute ethanol (EtOH), acetonitrile (MeCN), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), acetone (CO(Me)2), dichloromethane (DCM), trichloromethane (TCM), tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene (PhMe), and tetrachloromethane (CCl4), are successfully discriminated and identified with an accuracy of 100%. What's more, this sensor array can also discriminate binary solvent mixtures and quantitatively detect DMSO in organic and inorganic solvents.

Abstract
Herein, novel luminol functional gold nanoparticles (lum-AuNPs) were quickly prepared in an alkaline luminol solution with HAuCl4, which had the unique characteristics of uniform size and excellent luminescence properties. A self-made flow injection-chemiluminescence (FI-CL) system was established to study the interaction between pepsin (Pep) and five alkaloids (anisodamine, berberine, reserpine, jatrorrhizine and matrine) using lum-AuNPs as the CL probe. Based on the abovementioned home-made CL system, the possible interaction mechanisms of Pep with five alkaloids have been comprehensively discussed by molecular docking simulation, chemical thermodynamics and kinetic studies. The results indicated that there were obvious CL enhancement and inhibition effects on the lum-AuNPs CL system for the Pep and the complex of Pep/alkaloids, respectively. The possible mechanism for the interaction of Pep-five alkaloids was mainly mediated by the hydrophobic force. The binding constant K and binding site n for the Pep-alkaloid interaction are consistent with the list of Ber > Res > Ani, Jat > Mat, which is relative to the potential of groups of alkaloids interacting with the active site of Pep.

Abstract
Preparation of color-tunable and stable plasmonic MoO3 nanomaterials remains challenging, due to the lack of an effective preparation strategy and surface protection in heavily doped MoO3. Herein, we report a facile and reliable method for synthesis of oxygen-deficient MoO3 (MoO3-x ) nanosheets using dopamine as the reducing agent and precursor for the formation of a polydopamine (PDA) surface coating. The PDA-coated MoO3-x nanosheets show stable and tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region (361-809 nm) via altering the pH value of the medium, accompanying the generation of multicolor nanosheet dispersions, such as deep blue, faint bluish, orange, yellow and black. Importantly, the resulting PDA-coated MoO3-x nanosheets are quite stable even in the presence of oxidants, and they can be used as an ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. The limit of detection for rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye is down to 0.3 fM concentration, and the corresponding Raman enhancement factor reaches 1 × 1010. The coupling of charge transfer between R6G and PDA-coated MoO3-x nanosheets and molecular resonances may be responsible for the strong SERS effect.

Abstract
Here we report a simple and low-cost colorimetric assay for ultrasensitive detection of copper (II) ions (Cu2+) based on pH-dependent formation of plasmonic MoO3-x nanosheets. The reaction between ascorbic acid (AA) and Cu2+ gives birth to hydrogen ions, which remarkably promotes the reduction of MoO3 nanosheets by AA to form oxygen vacancies-rich MoO3-x nanosheets that increase the free carrier concentration, generating a strong local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption. The Cu2+-triggered LSPR is utilized for development of the colorimetric assay. Under the optimal experimental conditions, this colorimetric assay can be used for selective detection of Cu2+, and the limit of detection is 0.8 nM, which is lower than that of most of the reported methods. Additionally, the present colorimetric assay has also been successfully employed for Cu2+ determination in real serum and human hair samples with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 96% to 108%.
