Electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers with and without magnetic nanoparticles for selective and efficient separation of glycoproteins

Surface imprinted microhelical magnetic polymer nanocomposite fibers for targeted lysozyme separation

Magnetic microhelical structures have recently drawn attention as microswimmers capable of mimicking bacterial propulsion in the low Reynolds number regime. Such structures can be used in microfluidic bioseparation or targeted delivery and their interaction with proteins is extremely important. In this study we fabricated silica coated magnetic microhelices resembling artificial bacterial flagella like structures via electrospinning magnetite nanoparticle incorporated polystyrene nanocomposite solution followed by silica sol coating. Two model proteins, Lysozyme (Lyz) and Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), were used for protein imprinting along with a polydopamine layer on the magnetic microhelical substrates. The adsorption mechanism of lysozyme on the molecularly imprinted support system was analyzed using adsorption model fitting (Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin). Adsorption capacity, selective binding and imprinting factor values were calculated for both imprinted (Lyz and BSA) and non-imprinted samples. A significantly higher adsorption capacity was obtained compared to previously reported studies.

Analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: An update for 2019-2020

This review is the tenth update of the original article published in 1999 on the application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2020. Also included are papers that describe methods appropriate to analysis by MALDI, such as sample preparation techniques, even though the ionization method is not MALDI. The review is basically divided into three sections: (1) general aspects such as theory of the MALDI process, matrices, derivatization, MALDI imaging, fragmentation, quantification and the use of arrays. (2) Applications to various structural types such as oligo- and polysaccharides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, glycosides and biopharmaceuticals, and (3) other areas such as medicine, industrial processes and glycan synthesis where MALDI is extensively used. Much of the material relating to applications is presented in tabular form. The reported work shows increasing use of incorporation of new techniques such as ion mobility and the enormous impact that MALDI imaging is having. MALDI, although invented nearly 40 years ago is still an ideal technique for carbohydrate analysis and advancements in the technique and range of applications show little sign of diminishing.

Synthesis of silver nanoplates on electrospun fibers via tollens reaction for SERS sensing of pesticide residues

Silver nanoplates were for the first time synthesized on electrospun chitosan/polyethylene oxide (CS/PEO) fibers via tollens reaction. Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers were used as the SERS-active substrates for quantitative evaluation of 2-naphthylthiol, with an enhancement factor (1.41 ± 0.07) × 10⁶. The SERS-active substrates are flexible, stable, and easy for transportion and preservation, and act as the SERS platform for sensitive detection of the target. Thiram and thiabendazole as the representatives of pesticide residues were identified and detected by the Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers, exhibiting linear response ranges from 10^-11 to 10^-7 M with a detection limit of 10^-11 M. The Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers meet the requirement of thiram detection in practical samples, such as apple, pear, tomato, and cucumber juices. The strategy revealed the feasibility of fabrication of Ag nanoplates on electrospun fibers via tollens reaction and SERS sensing of pesticides in real samples. Ag nanoplates/CS/PEO fibers were fabricated by tollens reaction and electrospinning for SERS sensing of pesticide residues with high sensitivity.

Use of aloin-based and rosin-based electrospun nanofibers as natural nanosorbents for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phenoxyacetic acid herbicides by microextraction in packed syringe method prior to GC-FID detection

The synthesis of three kinds of sorbents is described. The first kind was a hydrophobic nanofiber as a specific sorbent for non-polar compounds. The second one was a hydrophilic nanofiber as a specific sorbent for polar compounds and the third one was a generic sorbent synthesized from hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds. The functional groups were natural compounds extracted from aloin plant and gum of pine tree. The aloin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN), rosin/PAN, and aloin/rosin/PAN electrospun nanofibers were synthesized through electrospinning strategy and then characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thereafter, the synthesized sorbents were used in microextraction using the packed syringe (MEPS) method. The determination was conducted using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Under the optimum condition, the method using aloin/rosin/PAN nanofibers as a sorbent showed a good linearity in the range 1.0-250 ng mL^-1 for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (as a model for non-polar compounds) and 1.0-200 ng mL^-1 for phenoxyacetic acid herbicides (CAPs) (as a model for polar compounds) with correlation coefficient (R²) higher than 0.997. Limits of detections (LODs) for PAHs and CAPs were in the range 0.1-0.3 ng mL^-1 and 0.3-0.5 ng mL^-1, respectively. The intra-day (n = 3) and inter-day (between 3 days) relative standard deviations (RDSs%) were in the range 6.3-12.3% for a single syringe. Finally, the MEPS-GC-FID method was applied as a simple, facile, and time and cost-effective method to analyze environmental, farm, and industrial water samples.
