Genetic variation in serotonin function impacts on altruistic punishment in the ultimatum game: A longitudinal approach

Growing evidence demonstrates that the serotonin system influences punishment behavior in social decision-making and that individual differences in the propensity to punish are, at least in part, due to genetic variation. However, the specific genes and their mechanisms by which they influence punishment behavior are not yet fully characterized. Here, we examined whether serotonin system-related gene variation impacts on altruistic punishment in the ultimatum game by using a longitudinal approach with three time points, covering a time frame up to four months in young adults (N = 106). Specifically, we investigated additive effects of 5-HTTLPR and TPH2 G-703T genotypes by using a composite score. This composite score was significantly associated with altruistic punishment, with individuals carrying both the S-allele and the G-allele demonstrating less punishment behavior. The results suggest that serotonin system-related gene variation contributes to individual differences in altruistic punishment. Furthermore, comparably high test-retest correlations suggest that punishment behavior in the ultimatum game represents a relatively stable, trait-like behavior.

Susceptibility loci for heroin and cocaine addiction in the serotonergic and adrenergic pathways in populations of different ancestry

BACKGROUND

Drug addiction is influenced by genetic factors.

AIM

To determine if genetic variants in the serotonergic and adrenergic pathways are associated with heroin and/or cocaine addiction.

SUBJECTS & METHODS

The study examined 140 polymorphisms in 19 genes in 1855 subjects with predominantly European or African ancestries.

RESULTS

A total of 38 polymorphisms (13 genes) showed nominal associations, including novel associations in S100A10 (p11) and SLC18A2 (VMAT2). The association of HTR3B SNP rs11606194 with heroin addiction in the European ancestry subgroup remained significant after correction for multiple testing (p(corrected) = 0.04).

CONCLUSION

The study strengthens our previous findings of association of polymorphisms in HTR3A, HTR3B and ADRA1A. The study suggests partial overlap in genetic susceptibility between populations of different ancestry and between heroin and cocaine addiction.

Recent advances in the genetics of emotion regulation: a review

Recent attention has been given to the role of emotion regulation in the development and maintenance of psychopathology, and the psychosocial literature on emotion regulation has been growing rapidly over the past decade. However, knowledge about the genetic etiology of emotion regulation facets has been slower to develop. The present paper aims to briefly introduce the various constructs that fall under the umbrella of emotion regulation; provide an overview of behavioral genetic methods; summarize the empirical studies of emotion regulation twin studies; introduce molecular genetic methods; review the recent molecular genetic studies on emotion regulation; and provide future directions for research.

Perinatal exposure to bisphenol A enhances contextual fear memory and affects the serotoninergic system in juvenile female mice

Perinatal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting chemical, affects the central nervous system, including effects on emotional responses and neurotransmitter release. In this study, we investigated the effects of BPA (250 ng/kg/day, from gestational day 10 to postnatal day 20) on fear memory and serotonin (5-HT) metabolites in the brain using contextual fear conditioning (FC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively, in adult and juvenile mice of both sexes. Furthermore, we studied the effects of BPA on the gene expression of 5-HT metabolite-related enzymes and 5-HT receptors using quantitative real-time RT PCR in the brains of juvenile females. BPA enhanced fear memory and increased serotonin metabolite (5-HIAA) levels and 5-HIAA/5-HT in the hippocampus, the striatum, the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla oblongata of juvenile female mice. In contrast, alterations in those areas were much smaller in adult females and in both juvenile and adult males. Furthermore, BPA induced increases in the expression levels of Tph2, Slc6a4, and Maoa mRNA in the hippocampus of juvenile females, indicating that BPA induces hyper 5-HT turnover in the hippocampus. Our results suggest that perinatal exposure to a low dose of BPA enhances fear memory and the 5-HTergic system in juvenile mice.
