Abstract
Abstract
Background
Recently facet joint block has been increasingly used to relief the residual pain after vertebral augmentation, but whether it can be a complementary or alternative to vertebral augmentation remain largely unknown. Thus, we conducted this meta-analysis to determine the effect of facet joint block in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF).
Methods
Following PRISMA statement, a comprehensive literature search through Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Wanfang Data, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chinese BioMedical Literature Database was performed to identify relevant studies. Studies comparing vertebral augmentation combined with facet joint block (combined therapy) with vertebral augmentation, and studies comparing facet joint block with vertebral augmentation were analyzed, respectively.
Results
A total of 10 studies were included. There were seven studies comparing combined therapy with vertebral augmentation, the results showed combined therapy was associated with significantly lower visual analog scale (VAS) scores on postoperative day 1, 7, month 1, 3, and lower oswestry disability index (ODI) scores on postoperative day 1, 7, and month 3. There were three studies comparing facet joint block with vertebral augmentation, the results demonstrated vertebral augmentation only provided better analgesia in month 1 after surgery, but it was associated with a higher incidence of refracture.
Conclusions
Current evidence suggested facet joint block might be considered as a complementary to vertebral augmentation in the treatment of OVCF, but it might not be effectively used as an alternative therapy.

Abstract
Methods Clinical and radiological data of 204 patients were reviewed. The patients were divided into Group A (PVP alone) and Group B (PVP and FB combined therapy) according to treatments. Back pain was evaluated with Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). The operation, fluoroscopic exposure time, and bone cement leakage were recorded. The χ2 test, Student's t-test, and repeated measures analysis of variance were used to compare the differences between the two groups. Results There were 125 patients in Group A and 79 patients in Group B. Their baseline characteristics were similar (P > 0.05). The mean VAS scores of Group A and Group B were 7.03 and 7.21 at admission, 4.7 and 3.2 at 1 day after operation, 4.0 and 3.0 at 3 months, and 2.2 and 2.2 at 12 months after operation, respectively. The mean ODI scores of Group A and Group B were 30.9 and 29.8 at admission, 17.6 and 17.7 at 3 months, and 10.5 and 10.9 at 12 months after operation, respectively. The mean operation time and fluoroscopic exposure time of Group A (35.6 minutes and 7.2 seconds, respectively) was significantly shorter than that of Group B (45.7 minutes and 11.7 seconds, respectively, P < 0.01). The incidence of bone cement leakage and new fractures after operation did not have statistically significant difference between groups. Conclusion PVP and FB combined therapy could provide better pain relief than PVP alone in short term after operation in patients with OVCFs associated back pains.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional, ancillary study of an international multicenter epidemiological study. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship of the anterior trunk mobility with self-report and physical performance measures in elderly women with acute low back pain (LBP). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA LBP is one of the most prevalent pain complaints in the elderly population. It is postulated that the increased range of motion of limited joints of the trunk may improve LBP and functionality of patients. Recent studies have, however, questioned the association between trunk range of motion and the functional status. METHODS The present study included a convenience sample of elderly women from the community aged 60 years and older who presented with a new (acute) episode of LBP. Volunteers with severe diseases and visual, hearing and mobility losses, or cognitive impairment were excluded. Trunk mobility was assessed by the fingertip-to-floor test. Functionality was assessed by the Roland-Morris Questionnaire (RMQ) and gait speed test. Statistical analysis was performed by using hierarchical linear regression model. RESULTS Data from 459 elderly women, mean age of 69.0 (6.1) years old, were used to describe this report. The additional predictive value for the inclusion of independent variable trunk mobility was only 4.4% in the RMQ score and 1.5% in the gait speed test, respectively. A reduced hierarchical linear regression model showed that the significant predictors for RMQ and gait speed test were body mass index, pain intensity, and trunk mobility. CONCLUSION This was the first study to investigate the relationship between trunk mobility and functionality in elderly women with acute LBP. The results suggest that these clinical parameters are independent from each other. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE N/A.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of elcatonin injections and oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for patients with osteoporosis who have acute lumbar pain after experiencing new vertebral compression fractures. Two hundred twenty-eight Japanese female patients (mean age 77.3 years) with acute lumbar pain from osteoporotic vertebral fractures were randomly divided into two groups. Patients in one group were given an NSAID (NSAIDs group) and patients in the other group were given weekly intramuscular injections of 20 units of elcatonin (elcatonin group). All patients underwent follow-up examinations up to 6 weeks from the start of the trial. Outcome measures were the level of functional impairment according to the Japan Questionnaire for Osteoporotic Pain (JQ22), the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RDQ), and a visual analog scale (VAS) of pain intensity. Statistical analyses focused on (1) the time course of pain and functional level using linear mixed effects models to analyze the longitudinal data and (2) the effectiveness of elcatonin injection with mean difference values and 95 % confidence intervals. Significant differences were seen over time between the initial values and the postintervention values (4 and 6 weeks) in JQ22, RDQ, and VAS scores (effect size d > 0.4) in each group. The mean differences between the elcatonin group and the NSAIDs group in each measure at 4 and 6 weeks were -4.8 and -8.3 for the JQ22, -1.3 and -2.6 for the RDQ, and -11.3 and -11.5 for the VAS, shifted to elcatonin. Once weekly elcatonin injection was more effective than NSAIDs for treating acute lumbar pain and improving mobility in Japanese women with osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

Abstract
PURPOSE Despite objectively good results, up to 70 % of individuals may not return to their pre-injury level of sports activity after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. Although psychological responses have been shown to affect outcomes after ACL injury, an appropriate means of measuring their effects, in addition to functional status, has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to develop a patient-reported questionnaire for measuring psychological factors associated with outcomes after ACL injury and to evaluate its reliability, validity, and responsiveness. METHODS After item analysis based on the results of two pilot studies and a short relevance assessment, 25 questionnaire items were selected for the Japanese Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Questionnaire 25 (JACL-25) and assessed for validity, reliability, and responsiveness in subjects with ACL injury. RESULTS The JACL-25 had no floor or ceiling effects and no confounding factors. A Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.981 and a Guttman split-half coefficient of 0.983 indicated excellent reliability. Large standardized response means (1.30-1.62) and effect sizes (0.96-1.51) from the preoperative to postoperative period indicated good responsiveness. Construct structures were created, and these items were separated into three domains. Strong correlations between the JACL-25 and the International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (r s = -0.86), Lysholm Score (r s = -0.73), and Tegner Activity Scale (r s = -0.65) indicated good concurrent validity of the JACL-25. CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrated that the JACL-25 was valid, reliable, and responsive enough to evaluate psychological factors associated with outcomes in individuals with ACL injuries. Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT The study of low back pain (LBP) is complex, and the physical and psychological aspects, including kinesiophobia, should be considered. Several studies have investigated the relationship between kinesiophobia and functionality in patients with chronic LBP. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, no studies have investigated the association between kinesiophobia and self-reported assessments of disability and physical performance in elderly patients with acute LBP. PURPOSE The study aimed to investigate the association between kinesiophobia and self-reported and physical performance measures among the elderly with acute LBP. DESIGN This was an observational, cross-sectional, ancillary study of the Back Complaints in the Elders study, a longitudinal observational epidemiologic research project by an international consortium involving Brazil, the Netherlands, and Australia. PATIENT SAMPLE Sample selection was carried out by convenience. The study included women from the community aged 60 years old and older who presented with a new episode of LBP. Volunteers with severe diseases, as well as visual, hearing, and mobility losses, or cognitive dysfunction, were excluded. Four hundred fifty nine elderly women (mean age: 69.0±6.1 years) were included. OUTCOME MEASURES Kinesiophobia was evaluated by Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ), subscale FABQ-Phys. Functionality was investigated by the Roland-Morris Questionnaire and the gait speed test. METHODS Statistical analysis was performed using hierarchical linear regression model. Statistical significance was established at the level of .05. RESULTS The additional predictive value because of the inclusion of the FABQ-Phys was 0.1%, using the Roland-Morris score, and 0.2% for the gait speed test. CONCLUSIONS This was the first study to investigate the association between the FABQ-Phys and functionality in elderly patients with acute LBP. The results provide preliminary evidence that kinesiophobia assessed by the FABQ-Phys cannot be generalized to disability.
