Abstract
Introduction The goal of this cadaver study in cats was to compare the mechanical properties of intact mandibles (C) with mandibles whose simulated fracture was located between the third and fourth premolar teeth and repaired with four possible treatments: (1) Stout multiple loop interdental wiring plus bis-acryl composite intraoral splint (S); (2) modified Risdon interdental wiring plus bis-acryl composite intraoral splint (R); (3) ultrasound-aided absorbable fixation plate (P); and (4) ultrasound-aided absorbable fixation mesh (M). Materials and methods Thirty feline mandibles were randomly assigned to the control and treatment groups. Mandibles were loaded by cantilever bending on the canine tooth, first in non-destructive cyclic loading followed by destructive ramp-to-failure loading. Results Cyclic loading showed no differences between the treatment groups in angular deflection (a measure of sample flexion under non-destructive loads); however, the R group had significantly higher angular deflection than the C group. In destructive testing, no differences in mechanical properties were found between the treatment groups; however, all treatment groups demonstrated significantly lower maximum bending moment, bending stiffness, energy to failure, and maximum force when compared to the control group. The main mode of failure of the intraoral splint groups (S and R) was fracture of the bis-acryl composite (50%), and the main mode of failure of the absorbable fixation groups (P and M) was fracture of the pins (91.7%). Discussion Intraoral splint and absorbable fixation methods have low strength and stiffness. The four treatments tested provided similar stabilization of mandibular fractures located between the third and fourth premolar teeth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intermaxillary fixation screw (IMFS) implantation is a common procedure in orthognathic surgery (OGS) performed to the temporary maxillary-mandibular fixation and stable bite relationships. The study aims to assess the accuracy of IMFS implantation with a digital guide to reduce the occurrence of root damage. METHODS This prospective study involved 40 patients undergoing OGS at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from August 2017 to May 2021. The patients were randomly divided into two groups according to whether the IMFS implantation was with or without digital guide (20 patients in the experimental group and 20 controls). The digital guides used in the experimental group were designed according to a virtual implantation plan and printed using stereolithography. In the control group, IMFSs were directly implanted by a surgeon based on clinical experience. Postoperatively, cone-beam computed tomography was performed to compare root proximity of IMFSs between the two groups and verify the accuracy of IMFS placement. RESULTS In the experimental group, there was no case of root damage, the incidence of the periodontal ligament (PDL) injured was 22.1%, and 77.9% IMFSs were placed without contacting adjacent anatomic structures. In the control group, the incidence of root damage had been up to 20.8%, 31.7% IMFSs injured the PDL, and only 47.5% IMFSs were placed between the roots (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION IMFSs can be placed more accurately with surgical guides, reducing the incidence of root and PDL damages.

Abstract
The purpose of the retrospective study was to investigate the long-term result of implant-induced injury on the adjacent tooth. The subjects of this retrospective study were patients who had received implants and had tooth injury; direct invasion of root (group I), root surface contact (group II), or < 1 mm distance of the implant from the root (group III). Clinical and pathological changes were periodically examined using radiographs and intra-oral examinations. Paired t-tests and chi-square tests were used to evaluate the implant stability quotient (ISQ) of implant and tooth complications, respectively (α = 0.05). A total of 32 implants and teeth in 28 patients were observed for average 122.7 (± 31.7, minimum 86) months. Seven teeth, three of which were subsequently extracted, needed root canal treatment. Finally, 90.6% of the injured teeth remained functional. Complications were significant and varied according to the group, with group I showing higher events than the others. The ISQs increased significantly. One implant in group I resulted in osseointegration failure. The implant survival rate was 96.9%. In conclusion, it was found even when a tooth is injured by an implant, immediate extraction is unnecessary, and the osseointegration of the invading implant is also predictable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate morphological and immunohistochemical features of tooth extraction sites in rats subjected to different antiresorptive drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Wistar rats were allocated into 4 groups according to the treatment: (1) alendronate, (2) raloxifene, (3) strontium ranelate, and (4) control. The animals underwent tooth extraction (60th day of treatment) and afterwards were euthanized (90th day of treatment). Tooth extraction sites were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), hematoxylin-eosin staining (H&E), and immunohistochemical staining (RANKL and OPG). RESULTS On H&E analysis, the alendronate group showed greater amounts of non-vital bone, biofilm, inflammatory infiltrate and root fragment, and smaller amount of vital bone. The strontium ranelate group showed great amount of non-vital bone. This group also had lower levels of OPG, while the alendronate group showed lower OPG and RANKL than the other groups. On SEM analysis, the alendronate group showed a considerable number of microcracks on the alveolar bone surface and few Howship lacunae and lack of bone cells as well. The raloxifene, strontium ranelate, and control groups showed a large number of bone cells and Howship lacunae on the bone surface and few microcracks. CONCLUSION Alendronate therapy is associated with macro- and microscopic features of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw at tooth extraction sites, whereas raloxifene therapy is not, and strontium ranelate therapy is associated with non-vital bone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Osteonecrosis of the jaws is a serious side effect of alendronate therapy, where tooth extraction is a major risk factor. Considering the significant number of patients undergoing antiresorptive therapies worldwide, the present study investigated whether raloxifene and strontium ranelate interfere with bone repair after tooth extraction in a similar way to bisphosphonates.

Abstract
Background The aim of this investigation was to describe the healing reactions following root damage caused by placement of a miniplate anchorage system. Material and Methods In 4 beagle dogs, 4 titanium miniplates (2 self-tapping screws per miniplate) were placed in each maxilla, after drilling of pilot-holes. Six fixation screws were unintentionally inserted damaging the root of maxillary canines. Two weeks later, half of the miniplates were loaded with a coil spring. Two dogs were euthanized 7 weeks after placement of the miniplates, while the remaining two after 29 weeks. Histological sections were prepared, microradiographed, observed under U.V. light, then stained and analysed under ordinary light. Results Four screws caused direct root damage; one was damaged during the drilling process; one caused damage to the periodontal ligament only. Among these 6 screws, 2 were mobile and 4 were stable at sacrifice. Limited root damage showed some repair after 29 weeks, consisting in a thick layer of mineralized cementum including anchoring periodontal fibres. Tissue repair was not related to screw stability or loading status. Conclusions Limited root damage has shown potential to heal, while extensive root damage has not. Precise position of insertion of the miniplates is thus of utmost importance. Key words:Temporary anchorage devices, animal studies, root resorption.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION More patients are choosing customized orthodontic appliances because of their excellent esthetics. It is essential that clinicians understand the biomechanics of the tooth movement tendency in customized lingual orthodontics. This study aimed to evaluate the tooth movement tendency during space closure in maxillary anterior teeth with the use of miniscrew anchorage in customized lingual orthodontics with various power arm locations. METHODS Three-dimensional finite element models of the maxilla were created with miniscrews and power arms; the positions were varied to change the force directions. A retraction force (1.5 N) was applied from the top of the miniscrews to the selected points on the power arm, and the initial displacements of the reference nodes of the maxillary teeth were analyzed. RESULTS After applying force in different directions, power arms located at the distal side of the canines led to larger initial lingual crown tipping and occlusal crown extrusion of the maxillary incisors compared with power arms located at the midpoint between the lateral incisors and canines, and caused a decreasing trend of the intercanine width. CONCLUSIONS In customized lingual orthodontic treatment, power arms located at the distal side of the canines are unfavorable for anterior teeth torque control and intercanine width control. Power arms located at the midpoint between the lateral incisors and canines can get better torque control, but still cannot achieve excepted torque without extra torque control methods, no matter whether its force application point is higher than, lower than, or equal to the level of the top of the miniscrews.
