Molecular Modeling in Anion Exchange Membrane Research: A Brief Review of Recent Applications

Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) fuel cells have attracted growing interest, due to their encouraging advantages, including high power density and relatively low cost. AEM is a polymer matrix, which conducts hydroxide (OH-) ions, prevents physical contact of electrodes, and has positively charged head groups (mainly quaternary ammonium (QA) groups), covalently bound to the polymer backbone. The chemical instability of the quaternary ammonium (QA)-based head groups, at alkaline pH and elevated temperature, is a significant threshold in AEMFC technology. This review work aims to introduce recent studies on the chemical stability of various QA-based head groups and transportation of OH- ions in AEMFC, via modeling and simulation techniques, at different scales. It starts by introducing the fundamental theories behind AEM-based fuel-cell technology. In the main body of this review, we present selected computational studies that deal with the effects of various parameters on AEMs, via a variety of multi-length and multi-time-scale modeling and simulation methods. Such methods include electronic structure calculations via the quantum Density Functional Theory (DFT), ab initio, classical all-atom Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, and coarse-grained MD simulations. The explored processing and structural parameters include temperature, hydration levels, several QA-based head groups, various types of QA-based head groups and backbones, etc. Nowadays, many methods and software packages for molecular and materials modeling are available. Applications of such methods may help to understand the transportation mechanisms of OH- ions, the chemical stability of functional head groups, and many other relevant properties, leading to a performance-based molecular and structure design as well as, ultimately, improved AEM-based fuel cell performances. This contribution aims to introduce those molecular modeling methods and their recent applications to the AEM-based fuel cells research community.

Self-calcifying lipid nanocarrier for bone tissue engineering

BACKGROUND

A nanoemulsion with specific surface properties (such as charge and functional groups) can initiate the deposition of calcium phosphate (CaP) on its surface, leading to formation of CaP nanoparticles with a lipid core. The lipid core can carry lipophilic compounds based on the function of the nanoemulsion. Therefore, a dual purpose nanoemulsion of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) exhibiting self-calcifying and carrier abilities can be developed.

METHODS

We employed an emulsification process to formulate LNPs with a specific charged surface. The LNPs were tested for their ability to calcify in simulated body fluid and encapsulate cholecalciferol (a model of active compound). The self-calcifying LNP was successfully fabricated using the emulsification process and stabilized using a mixture of polysorbate 80 and polysorbate 20.

RESULTS

The LNPs incubated in simulated body fluid bound to calcium and phosphate, subsequently forming CaP on the particle surface and resulting in approximately 180-nm CaP spheres with a lipid core. The LNPs facilitated calcium phosphate deposition in the collagen scaffolds. In addition, LNPs can be used as carriers of lipophilic compounds without impeding the self-calcifying ability.

Adsorption Conformation of Comb-Shaped Polycarboxylate Ethers on Ettringite (100) Surface: An Atomic Scales Simulation

The adsorption of five polycarboxylate ethers (PCEs) oligomers with different side-chain number and side-chain length on the ettringite (100) surface in explicit solution is studied by all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The adsorption conformations, adsorption energies, the radial distribution functions (RDF) between PCEs and ettringite surface and density distribution profile of water perpendicular to the substrate are analyzed. After dynamic equilibrium, negatively charged carboxylate groups are absorbed on the surface of the disordered ettringite crystal and the side-chains are extended to solution. The influence of the number of side-chain on the adsorption strength of PCEs on the ettringite (100) surface is more significant than that of the length of side-chain. The less number of grafted side-chains, the weaker electrostatic shielding, the electrostatic interaction between PCEs and ettringite (100) surface is stronger, which is favorable for the adsorption. The conformation of adsorbed PCEs is closely related to the length of side chain. The greater the length of side-chains is, the larger will be the coverage area of PCE on surface and the degree of water reduction. The mechanism of adsorption of PCEs on ettringite surface is concluded and the major contribution to the adsorption includes ion pairs, hydrogen bonds and an entropic compensation.

Hybrid Hollow Fiber Nanofiltration-Calcite Contactor: A Novel Point-of-Entry Treatment for Removal of Dissolved Mn, Fe, NOM and Hardness from Domestic Groundwater Supplies

Groundwater (GW) is one of the main potable water sources worldwide. However, the presence of undesirable compounds and particularly manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) (mainly co-existing in GWs) are considered as objectionable components of potable water for both health and aesthetic issues. As such, individual dwellings supplied by domestic wells are especially threatened by these issues. Current domestic treatment technologies are complicated to operate and even dangerous if improperly maintained (e.g., catalytic filtration) or consume salts and produce spent brine which pollutes the environment (i.e., ion exchange resins). Therefore, it is of prime importance to design a simple and compact, yet robust, system for Mn and Fe control of the domestic GW sources, which can reliably guarantee the desired Mn limit in the finished water (20μg/L). In the course of this study, we demonstrated, for the first time, that a hybrid hollow fiber nanofiltration (HFNF)–calcite contactor process is a promising alternative for treating domestic GWs with elevated levels of Mn, Fe, natural organic matter (NOM) and hardness. The efficacy of the HFNF membranes in terms of removal of Mn, Fe, NOM and fouling was compared with commercially available NF270 and NF90 membranes. The results revealed that HFNF (100–200 Da) and NF90 maintained considerably high rejection of Mn, Fe and NOM due to their dominant sieving effect. In contrary, the rejections of the above-mentioned components were decreased in the presence of high hardness for the looser HFNF (200–300 Da) and NF270 membranes. No membrane fouling was detected and the permeate flux was stable when the hard GW was filtered with the HFNF membranes, regardless of their molecular weight cut-off and transmembrane pressure, while the permeability of the NF270 and NF90 membranes steadily decline during the filtration. Integrating a calcite contactor, as a post filtration step, to the HFNF process yielded further Mn, Fe and NOM removals from the HFNF permeate and adjustment of its hardness level. The best performance was achieved when a blend of Calcite–CorosexTM (90/10wt.%) was used as a post-treatment to the tight HFNF (100–200 Da).
