Computational study on acetamiprid-molecular imprinted polymer

Dual-template imprinted polymer electrochemical sensor for simultaneous determination of malathion and carbendazim using graphene quantum dots

Malathion (MAL) and carbendazim (CBZ) are organophosphate pesticides and fungicides, respectively. They are often used simultaneously in agriculture, and both have been shown to have harmful effects on humans and animals. Therefore, it is important to be able to measure both of these toxins simultaneously in order to assess their potential risks. This study aims to design a dual template electrochemical sensor using a cost-effective graphite-epoxy composite electrode (GECE) modified with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) coated on graphene quantum dots (GQDs) for simultaneous detection of MAL and CBZ in real samples. GQDs were synthesized initially, and their surface was coated with MIPs that were formed using MAL and CBZ as the template molecules, ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate as the cross-linker, and methacrylic acid as the functional monomer. The GQDs@MIP were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray scattering spectroscopy. Parameters affecting the sensor response, such as the percentage of GQDs@MIP in the fabricated electrode, the pH of the rebinding solution and analysis solution, and the incubation time, were optimized. The optimum pH values of the rebinding solution were verified using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Under the optimized conditions, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) response calibration curves of MAL and CBZ were generated, and the results showed that the sensor had a linear response to MAL in the range of 0.02-55.00 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2 nM (S/N = 3) and to CBZ in the range of 0.02-45.00 μM with a low LOD of 1 nM (S/N = 3). The results also demonstrated the proposed sensor's long-term stability and anti-interference capability. The practical applicability of the fabricated electrode was evaluated for real sample analysis, and good recovery values were obtained.

Magnetic and mesoporous molecularly imprinted polymer synthesized by rational computation design: Sample preparation and analysis of ractopamine

Through density functional theory calculations was studied theoretically the formation process of a magnetic and mesoporous molecularly imprinted polymer for ractopamine (RAC), evaluating the molecular electrostatic potential map, functional monomers, functional monomer / template stoichiometry and crosslink agents. The results revealed that the best conditions for the synthesis were established with acrylic acid as functional monomer in a 1: 4 stoichiometry using acetonitrile as the solvent and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as crosslink agent. It was observed that nine hydrogen bonds established between the RAC and acrylic acid play a key role on the pre-polymerization complex. In addition, three analytical methods using HPLC, UHPLC and CE instruments were optimized for rapid analysis. The adsorbent was experimentally synthesized considering the best conditions found at the molecular level and characterized by FTIR, DRX, TGA, SEM, TEM, surface analysis, and wettability. After that, the synthesized material was used in magnetic solid phase extraction combined with capillary electrophoresis in a preliminary RAC recovery study from milk samples. Finally, greenness metric with a score of 0.55 have been obtained for the sample preparation procedure using the online AGREEprep metric.

Atenolol-imprinted polymer: a DFT study

The purpose of this work was to investigate, via DFT calculations, the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for atenolol (ATL) β-blocker evaluating distinct functional monomers (FMs), solvents, and cross-linker agents (CLAs). As the main result, we could determine from structural and thermodynamic data the best MIP synthesis protocol as being: p-vinyl benzoic acid (APV) as FM, toluene as solvent, and pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETRA) as CLA. We believe this rational design can be very useful for experimentalists in an attempt to perform an efficient synthesis of a MIP for this important β-blocker drug.

Thiourea derivatives acting as functional monomers of As(Ш) molecular imprinted polymers: A theoretical and experimental study on binding mechanisms

Thiourea derivatives are expected to be potential monomers of As(Ш) molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) which are used to specifically recognize As(Ш). However, the specific recognition and binding mechanisms between template and monomers are unclear, which limits the practical applications of MIPs in As(Ш)detection. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and experimental methods were jointly applied to explore the binding interactions between H₃AsO₃ and thiourea derivatives and environmental factors influences, aiming to find out the best monomer and optimal preparation conditions for H₃AsO₃ MIPs. Among five monomer candidates, (2, 6-difluorophenyl) thiourea (FT) was calculated to be the most potential one, while allyl thiourea (AT) was the second choice. Configurations of the most stable binding complexes were found out. The optimal solvent was found to be toluene and the bindings were more favorable at pH 7.5 in aqueous solution. Besides, EGDMA was proved as the best cross-linker with the optimal ratio of template: monomer: cross-linker= 2:3:20. Moreover, the binding interactions were identified to be hydrogen bonds, and the non-covalent nature was revealed. These findings provide references for efficient design and preparation of good-performance H₃AsO₃ MIPs, which can be used to detect and remove As(Ш) from environment.

A Review on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Preparation by Computational Simulation-Aided Methods

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are obtained by initiating the polymerization of functional monomers surrounding a template molecule in the presence of crosslinkers and porogens. The best adsorption performance can be achieved by optimizing the polymerization conditions, but this process is time consuming and labor-intensive. Theoretical calculation based on calculation simulations and intermolecular forces is an effective method to solve this problem because it is convenient, versatile, environmentally friendly, and inexpensive. In this article, computational simulation modeling methods are introduced, and the theoretical optimization methods of various molecular simulation calculation software for preparing molecularly imprinted polymers are proposed. The progress in research on and application of molecularly imprinted polymers prepared by computational simulations and computational software in the past two decades are reviewed. Computer molecular simulation methods, including molecular mechanics, molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics, are universally applicable for the MIP-based materials. Furthermore, the new role of computational simulation in the future development of molecular imprinting technology is explored.

Theoretical design and preparation research of molecularly imprinted polymers for steviol glycosides

In this paper, a novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for specific adsorption of steviol glycosides was designed, and the imprinting mechanism of self-assembly system between template and monomers was clearly explored. Firstly, steviol (STE) was chosen as dummy template, and the density functional theory (DFT) at B3LYP/6-31 + G (d, p) level was used to select monomers, imprinting molar ratios, solvents, and cross-linking agents. The selectivity to five steviol glycosides was also calculated. Importantly, reduced density gradient (RDG) theory combined with atom in molecules (AIM) and infrared spectrum (IR) was applied to investigate the bonding situation and the nature of noncovalent interaction in self-assembly system. The theoretical designed results showed that the template which interacts with acrylic acid (AA) has the minimum binding energy, and the complex with the molar ratio of 1 : 4 has the most stable structure. Toluene (TL) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were chosen as the optimal solvent and cross-linking agent, respectively. Five hydrogen bonds formed in the self-assembly system are the key forces at the adsorption sites of MIPs through the RDG and AIM analyses. The MIPs were synthesized by theoretical predictions, and the results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity towards dulcoside A is 26.17 mg/g. This work provided a theoretical direction and experimental validation for deeper researches of the MIPs for steviol glycosides. In addition, the method of RDG theory coupled with AIM and IR also could be used to analyze other imprinting formation mechanisms systematically.

Theoretical research of molecular imprinted polymers formed from formaldehyde and methacrylic acid

In recent years, with the development of molecular imprinting technology, the imprinting sites, nature of imprinting, selection of functional monomers, cross-linking agents, solvents, and the optimization of the imprinting ratio are all the hot spots of researchers. In this work, the theoretical prediction of the self-assembly system of formaldehyde (HCHO) molecularly imprinted polymer was carried out by the B3LYP/6-31 G(d,p) method. The geometric configuration and active sites of the stable complex of HCHO and methacrylic acid (MAA) were analyzed. The selection of the imprinting ratios, cross-linking agents, and solvents was discussed. The topological properties of electron density of HCHO-MAA complex were considered by using the topological analysis method of chemical bond electron density based on valence bond theory. This study cannot only reveal the relationship between the imprinting mechanism of molecularly imprinted polymers and the molecular structure and properties of molecularly imprinted polymers but also provide valuable reference for the design and preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers.

Screening of functional monomers and solvents for the molecular imprinting of paclitaxel separation: a theoretical study

The interactions between the template molecule paclitaxel (PTX) and seven functional monomers containing methacrylic acid (MA), acrolein (AC), 4-vinylbenzoic acid (4VA), acrylonitrile (AN), 2-vinylpyridine (2VP), 2,6-bisacrylamide pyridine (BAP) and methyl methacrylate (MM) were systematically investigated adopting the density functional theory (DFT) method. Moreover, the different binding sites on PTX and solvents embracing chloroform, acetone, ethanol, methanol, and acetonitrile were considered. The calculated solvent energies (ΔE_solvent) and template-monomer binding energies (ΔE_b) suggest that the chloroform is the most suitable solvent for the molecular imprinting reaction of PTX among the studied five solvents. Furthermore, from the obtained ΔE_b, we can find that the monomer 4VA combining with PTX in the form of the specific intermolecular hydrogen bonds would present the most stable structure among the investigated monomers. These results can provide valuable theoretical guidance for the efficient extraction of PTX by the molecular imprinting technique in experiments. Graphical abstracts.
