Inhibiting effect of carbonate on the photoinduced flatband potential shifts during water photooxidation at TiO2/solution interface

Photo-Chlorine Production with Hydrothermally Grown and Vacuum-Annealed Nanocrystalline Rutile

Photo-generated high-energy surface states can help to produce chlorine in aqueous environments. Here, aligned rutile (TiO2) nanocrystal arrays are grown onto fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates and activated either by hydrothermal Sr/Ba surface doping and/or by vacuum-annealing. With vacuum-annealing, highly photoactive films are obtained with photocurrents of typically 8 mA cm−2 at 1.0 V vs. SCE in 1 M KCl (LED illumination with λ = 385 nm and approx. 100 mW cm−2). Photoelectrochemical chlorine production is demonstrated at proof-of-concept scale in 4 M NaCl and suggested to be linked mainly to the production of Ti(III) surface species by vacuum-annealing, as detected by post-catalysis XPS, rather than to Sr/Ba doping at the rutile surface. The vacuum-annealing treatment is proposed to beneficially affect (i) bulk semiconductor TiO2 nanocrystal properties and electron harvesting, (ii) surface TiO2 reactivity towards chloride adsorption and oxidation, and (iii) FTO substrate performance.

The Effect of Laser Re-Solidification on Microstructure and Photo-Electrochemical Properties of Fe-Decorated TiO2 Nanotubes

Fossil fuels became increasingly unpleasant energy source due to their negative impact on the environment; thus, attractiveness of renewable, and especially solar energy, is growing worldwide. Among others, the research is focused on smart combination of simple compounds towards formation of the photoactive materials. Following that, our work concerns the optimized manipulation of laser light coupled with the iron sputtering to transform titania that is mostly UV-active, as well as exhibiting poor oxygen evolution reaction to the material responding to solar light, and that can be further used in water splitting process. The preparation route of the material was based on anodization providing well organized system of nanotubes, while magnetron sputtering ensures formation of thin iron films. The last step covering pulsed laser treatment of 355 nm wavelength significantly changes the material morphology and structure, inducing partial melting and formation of oxygen vacancies in the elementary cell. Depending on the applied fluence, anatase, rutile, and hematite phases were recognized in the final product. The formation of a re-solidified layer on the surface of the nanotubes, in which thickness depends on the laser fluence, was shown by microstructure studies. Although a drastic decrement of light absorption was recorded especially in UV range, laser-annealed samples have shown activity under visible light even 20 times higher than bare titania. Electrochemical analysis has shown that the improvement of photoresponse originates mainly from over an order of magnitude higher charge carrier density as revealed by Mott-Schottky analysis. The results show that intense laser light can modulate the semiconductor properties significantly and can be considered as a promising tool towards activation of initially inactive material for the visible light harvesting.

Scalable Route toward Superior Photoresponse of UV-Laser-Treated TiO2 Nanotubes

Titanium dioxide nanotubes gain considerable attention as a photoactive material due to chemical stability, photocorrosion resistance, or low-cost manufacturing method. This work presents scalable pulsed laser modification of TiO₂ nanotubes resulting in enhanced photoactivity in a system equipped with a motorized table, which allows for modifications of both precisely selected and any-large sample area. Images obtained from scanning electron microscopy along with Raman and UV-vis spectra of laser-treated samples in a good agreement indicate the presence of additional laser-induced shallow states within band gap via degradation of crystalline structure. However, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra revealed no change of chemical nature of the modified sample surface. Photoelectrochemical measurements demonstrate superior photoresponse of laser-treated samples up to 1.45-fold for an energy beam fluence of 40 mJ/cm² compared to that of calcined one. According to the obtained results, optimal processing parameters were captured. Mott-Schottky analysis obtained from impedance measurements indicates an enormous (over an order of magnitude) increase of donor density along with a +0.74 V positive shift of flat band potential. Such changes in electronic structure are most likely responsible for enhanced photoactivity. Thus, the elaborated method of laser nanostructuring can be successfully employed to the large-scale modification of titania nanotubes resulting in their superior photoactivity. According to that, the results of our work provide a contribution to wider applications of materials based on titania nanotubes.
