Abstract
Cyanoacrylate-based adhesives are widely used in wound closure, providing good cosmetic results and little discomfort. However, reports in the literature are found about negative effects that include the release of cytotoxic chemicals during biodegradation. In this study, we sought to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of four cyanoacrylate-based adhesives on the closure of skin incisions in Rattus norvegicus. The animals (n = 140) were divided into five groups of 28 animals each according to the wound closure technique: G1 and G2 (n-2-ethyl-cyanoacrylate); G3 (n-2-butyl-cyanoacrylate); G4 (n-2-octyl-cyanoacrylate); and G5 (5 nylon stitches). Midline incisions measuring 5.0 cm in length were created and closed using the different materials evaluated, and on D3, D7, D14, and D21, tensiometric and histopathological analyses were performed. Shorter wound closure and adhesion times were observed in G4 animals. At D3 and D7, G5 presented greater tensiometric resistance in the animals of G5, with a decrease in D14 and D21 compared to the other groups. On the other hand, the wounds of G3 and G4 were more resistant in D14 and D21, reaching maximum resistance values. Polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cells are more prevalent and more granulation tissue was observed in G5. The deposition of type III collagen was more evident in G5, whilst there was no difference in the amount of type I collagen in any of the groups treated with cyanoacrylate adhesives. Larger areas stained positive for VEGF-α in G2 and smaller areas in G4, with peaks at D7 and D14. In general, cyanoacrylate adhesives cause less intense inflammatory reactions, resulting in shorter healing times when compared to nylon sutures.

Self-adhesive hydrogel meshes reduce tissue incorporation and mechanical behavior versus microgrips self-fixation: a preclinical study. Hernia 2022; 26:543-555. Abstract
Purpose Atraumatic mesh fixation for abdominal hernia repair has been developed to avoid the disadvantages of classical fixation with sutures, which is considered a cause of chronic pain and discomfort. This study was designed to analyze, in the short and medium term, the biological and mechanical behavior of two self-fixing meshes compared to that of a polypropylene (PP) mesh fixed with a cyanoacrylate (CA) tissue adhesive. Methods Partial abdominal wall defects (6 × 4 cm) were created in New Zealand rabbits (n = 36) and repaired using a self-adhesive hydrogel mesh (Adhesix™), a self-gripping mesh (ProGrip™) or a PP mesh fixed with CA (Surgipro™ CA). After 14 and 90 days, the host tissue incorporation, macrophage response and biomechanical strength were examined. Results At 14 and 90 days, the ProGrip and Surgipro CA meshes showed good host tissue incorporation; however, the Adhesix implants presented poor integration, seroma formation and a higher degree of shrinkage. The Adhesix hydrogel was completely reabsorbed at 14 days, whereas ProGrip microhooks were observed at all study times. The macrophage response was higher in the ProGrip and Surgipro CA groups at 14 and 90 days, respectively, and decreased over time. At 90 days, the ProGrip implants showed the highest tensile strength values and the Adhesix implants showed the highest failure stretch. Conclusion Meshes with mechanical microgrip self-fixation (ProGrip) show better biological and mechanical behavior than those with adhesive hydrogel (Adhesix) in a preclinical model of abdominal hernia repair in rabbits.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS We assessed 3-year anatomic and functional results using synthetic glue to fix mesh in laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy. METHODS Prospective multicenter cohort study in three academic urogynecology departments. Seventy consecutive patients with stage ≥ 3 POP-Q (Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification) anterior and/or apical prolapse underwent laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy using synthetic surgical glue to fix anterior and posterior meshes to the vagina. Patients were followed up at 1, 2 and 3 years. Primary outcome was anterior and apical anatomic success (POP-Q stage ≤ 1) at 3 years. Secondary outcomes comprised functional results (international quality of life and sexuality scales), mesh-related morbidity and urinary incontinence at 3 years. RESULTS Mean age was 56.7 ± 1.2 years. Mean follow-up was 43 months. Anterior compartment anatomic success rate was 87% at 2 years (Ba, -2.4 cm; p < 0.0001) and 86.5% at 3 years (Ba, -2.3 cm; p < 0.0001); apical success was 96.3% at 2 years (C, -6.8 cm; p < 0.0001) and 97.3% at 3 years (C, -6.5 cm; p < 0.0001). All quality-of-life scores improved significantly and lastingly at 3 years: PFDI-20, PFIQ-7 and PISQ-12, respectively, p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001 and p = 0.01. There was one case of vaginal mesh exposure at 3 years (2.8%) and five of mesh shrinkage at 1 year (7.8%), none at 2 years and two at 3 years (5.4%). Urinary incontinence rate was 29.7% at 1 year, 14.8% at 2 years and 11.1% at 3 years. CONCLUSION Vaginal mesh adhesive in laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy remained effective at 3 years, with excellent tolerance and no specific complications. Anatomic and functional results were good and enduring in terms of both anterior and apical correction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antibacterial meshes for hernia repair seek to avoid infection in the patient. As these biomaterials are especially prone to bacteria settling at their sutured borders, this study examines whether the use of a cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive could improve mesh behavior at the fixation zones. METHODS First, antibacterial polypropylene meshes were prepared by soaking in 0.05% chlorhexidine, and the response of n-hexyl cyanoacrylate to contamination with Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 was assessed in vitro. Then, in a preclinical model, partial defects (5 x 3 cm) were created in the abdominal wall of 18 New Zealand White rabbits and repaired with mesh to establish the following 3 study groups: (1) mesh without chlorhexidine fixed with cyanoacrylate, (2) antibacterial mesh fixed with sutures, and (3) antibacterial mesh fixed with cyanoacrylate (n = 6 each). The implants were inoculated with 106 CFU/mL of S aureus. At 14 days after surgery, bacterial adhesion to the implant and its integration within host tissue were determined through microbiological, histological and immunohistochemical procedures. RESULTS As observed in vitro, the cyanoacrylate gave rise to a 1.5-cm bacteria-free margin around the prosthetic mesh. In vivo, the tissue adhesive prevented bacterial adhesion to the fixation zones, reducing infection of chlorhexidine-free meshes and optimizing the efficacy of the antibacterial meshes compared with those fixed with sutures. CONCLUSION These findings indicated that cyanoacrylate fixation does not affect mesh integration into the host tissue. Likewise, the antibacterial behavior and tissue response of a chlorhexidine-treated polypropylene mesh is improved when cyanoacrylate is used for its fixation.

Abstract
PURPOSE Laparoscopic ventral and incisional hernia repair (LVIHR) has become a common procedure because of its feasibility and safety, but it is not free of complications. Acute and chronic post-operative pain and bleeding caused by traumatic fixation of the mesh are frequently prolonging the hospital stay. The aim of this study was to analyze the behavior of n-butyl-cyanoacrylate (GLUBRAN® 2) as only mesh fixation METHODS: Ten female pigs were involved in the study and were divided into two groups of five (A and B). Animals in each group underwent a laparoscopic procedure in which two meshes were placed intraperitoneally and fixed with the same synthetic glue only. Animals in group A were sacrificed after 3 weeks, and those in group B were sacrificed after 12 weeks. We studied the morphological, biomechanical, and histological characteristics of the intraperitoneal mesh-tissue interface RESULTS: No disruption, migration or folding was observed in any of the pigs. In group A, the mean tensile strength was 1.4 N/cm (± 0.2) while in group B, the mean tensile strength was 2.5 N/cm (± 0.8). Histological analyses, in areas where mesh was fixed using the glue, showed a chronic lymphocytic inflammatory reaction with a granulomatous component and a marked desmoplastic reaction made up of immature collagen and numerous fibroblasts acquiring myofibroblastic characteristics. In some areas corresponding to fixation, the desmoplastic reaction originated from mature lamellar bone tissue with osteocytes and osteoblasts. CONCLUSION Laparoscopic mesh fixation with only the synthetic comonomer glue GLUBRAN® 2 is feasible, effective, and safe in intraperitoneal incisional/ventral hernia repair in this animal model.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of different methods of sutureless fixation of lightweight meshes made of different polymers for repair of experimental hernias. Two lateral hernia defects were modeled in male rats and covered with polyester and polypropylene prostheses. The meshes were fixed with Histacryl glue (group 1), or self-gripping meshes were used (group 2), or the meshes were implanted without fixation (group 3). On day 5 after surgery, mesh position and efficiency of fixation were evaluated. It was found that fixation is necessary for all light surgical meshes. Polyester meshes demonstrated better adhesive properties than polypropylene meshes. The most pronounced differences in the adhesive properties were found for self-gripping prosthesis, while in the groups with glue fixation, the differences were less pronounced.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to present a novel approach for complete and permanent ureteral occlusion using a percutaneous injection of Ifabond cyanoacrylate glue. METHODS We describe in detail all the steps of our surgery, performed on a 79-year-old patient with urinary leakage from ureteral stump following radical cystectomy. N-hexyl-cyanoacrylate glue (Ifabond) was used to occlude the distal ureter and solve the leakage. RESULTS Our approach was successful, sparing our already frail patient further surgical procedures. Six months pyelography confirmed the complete ureteral blockage with absence of extravasation. CONCLUSIONS In complicated scenarios with urinary leakages and frail patients, synthetic glues such as Ifabond might represent an interesting therapeutic option to solve the fistulas, leading to durable success with a minimally invasive approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As an alternative to sutures, meshes used for hernia repair can be fixed using cyanoacrylate-based adhesives. Attempts to improve these adhesives include alkyl-chain lengthening to reduce their toxicity. This preclinical study compares the long-term behavior of cyanoacrylates of different chain lengths already used in hernia repair and new ones for this application. MATERIALS AND METHODS Partial abdominal wall defects were repaired using a Surgipro mesh in 18 New Zealand White rabbits, and groups were established according to the mesh fixation method: sutures (control), Glubran 2 (n-butyl), Ifabond (n-hexyl), and the new adhesives SafetySeal (n-butyl), and Evobond (n-octyl). Six months after surgery, recovered implants were examined to assess adhesive degradation, host tissue reaction, and biomechanical strength. RESULTS All the cyanoacrylate groups showed good host tissue incorporation in the meshes. Macrophage responses to Glubran and Ifabond were quantitatively greater compared with sutures. Cell damage caused by the adhesives was similar, and only Glubran induced significantly more damage than sutures. Significantly lower collagen 1/3 messenger RNA expression was induced by Ifabond than the remaining fixation materials. No differences were observed in collagen expression except slightly reduced collagen I deposition in Glubran/Ifabond and collagen III deposition in the suture group. Mechanical strengths failed to vary between the suture and cyanoacrylate groups. CONCLUSIONS All cyanoacrylates showed good long-term behavior and tolerance irrespective of their long or intermediate chain length. Cyanoacrylate residues persisted at 6 mo, indicating their incomplete degradation. Biomechanical strengths were similar both for the adhesives and sutures.
