Abstract
Both in-hospital and out-of-hospital cardiac arrests are associated with a high mortality. In the past survival advantages for patients could be achieved by optimizing the chain of rescue and postresuscitation treatment; however, for patients with refractory cardiac arrest, there have so far been few promising treatment options. For selected patients with refractory cardiac arrest who do not achieve return of spontaneous circulation with conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), extracorporeal (e)CPR using venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is an option to improve the probability of survival. This article describes the technical features, important aspects of treatment, and the current data situation on eCPR in patients with in-hospital or out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Abstract
Monitoring the function of essential organ systems is a hallmark of critical care. In combination with the medical history, physical examination and selective diagnostic tests. Monitoring facilitates the bed-side diagnosis of many diseases in critical care and guides therapeutic management while providing optimal patient safety. The availability of monitoring compensates in the very often complex and multimorbid patients and the very dynamic course of their diseases the lack of universally applicable treatment protocols, that are based on the results of randomized critical care trials. In the future clinical decision support systems based on artificial intelligence might support intensivists in the analysis of monitoring data in terms of individual prognosis assessment and choice of therapy.

Abstract
Informed by a series of systematic reviews, scoping reviews and evidence updates from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation, the 2021 European Resuscitation Council Guidelines present the most up to date evidence-based guidelines for the practice of resuscitation across Europe. The guidelines cover the epidemiology of cardiac arrest; the role that systems play in saving lives, adult basic life support, adult advanced life support, resuscitation in special circumstances, post resuscitation care, first aid, neonatal life support, paediatric life support, ethics and education.

Abstract
These European Resuscitation Council Ethics guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the ethical, routine practice of resuscitation and end-of-life care of adults and children. The guideline primarily focus on major ethical practice interventions (i.e. advance directives, advance care planning, and shared decision making), decision making regarding resuscitation, education, and research. These areas are tightly related to the application of the principles of bioethics in the practice of resuscitation and end-of-life care.

Abstract
The European Resuscitation Council has produced these newborn life support guidelines, which are based on the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) 2020 Consensus on Science and Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) for Neonatal Life Support. The guidelines cover the management of the term and preterm infant. The topics covered include an algorithm to aid a logical approach to resuscitation of the newborn, factors before delivery, training and education, thermal control, management of the umbilical cord after birth, initial assessment and categorisation of the newborn infant, airway and breathing and circulation support, communication with parents, considerations when withholding and discontinuing support.
