Abstract
Background The use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to modulate pain, psychological aspects, and cognitive functions has increased in recent years. The present scoping review aims to investigate the use of tDCS in cancer patients and its significant impact on psychocognitive and pain related symptoms. Methods From the earliest available date to June 2023, a comprehensive search was conducted in three electronic scientific databases-PubMed, Scopus, and Embase-and other supplementary sources. Ten relevant studies were identified and included, comprising single case studies, randomized controlled trials, pilot studies, and one retrospective study. PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews were followed. Results These studies investigated the use of tDCS to improve pain and psychocognitive aspects in patients with various types of cancer, including breast, oral, bladder, lung, pancreatic, head and neck cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and meningioma. Overall, the results suggest that tDCS has shown efficacy in relieving pain, reducing anxiety and depression, and improving cognitive function in cancer patients. Conclusion Due to the limited number and high heterogeneity of the existing literature in this field, more investigation and the establishment of standardized protocols would be required to obtain more conclusive evidence.

Abstract
Cognitive dysfunctions and functional brain modifications are among the side effects reported by breast cancer patients that persist beyond the chemotherapy. This paper aims at synthesizing the evidence on cognitive and functional brain changes and their associations in breast cancer patients treated with chemotherapy. A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Scopus, and Embase up to July 2022. Eligible studies evaluated adult women with breast cancer treated with systemic chemotherapy, that performed cognitive assessment and resting-state functional MRI. Methodological quality was assessed. Sixteen studies were included, with a total of 1054 female participants. All studies reported alterations mainly concerned the fronto-parieto-temporal system and specifically involved the disruption of the DMN. Consistent with these findings, BCPs showed changes in cognitive performance reporting dysfunctions in executive ability, memory, and attention. However, not all the studies found a significant association between functional brain alterations and cognitive dysfunction. Some limitations including lack of sample homogeneity and different methodological approaches were reported. This work highlighted the presence of cognitive dysfunctions and functional brain alteration in breast cancer patients treated with chemotherapy. This allows a greater awareness of the side effects, promoting better clinical management. However, further research is needed to investigate the cause-effect relationship between cognitive and functional alterations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chemobrain is a well-established clinical syndrome that has become an increasing concern because of the growing number of long-term cancer survivors. It refers to the post-chemotherapy related cognitive dysfunction. The aim of this study was to objectively assess the impact of cancer treatment on the cognition of cancer patients. METHODS This was a convenience sample comparative study conducted at the Hematology and Oncology Department of Hôtel Dieu de France University Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon. It included cancer patients (G1) aged under 65 years who had already been treated for cancer compared to two control groups. The first control group (G2) consisted of treatment-naïve cancer patients aged under 65, and the second group (G3) was recruited from a pool of healthy controls aged between 40 and 65 years. All participants were asked to complete the part B of the trail making test (TMT) and the digital symbolic substitution test (DSST). RESULTS In the bivariate analysis, patients in G1 had significantly higher scores than patients in G2 (P=0.017) and G3 (P<0.001) on the TMT-B. However, patients in G1 only had lower scores on DSST when compared with G3 (P=0.017). In the logistic regression taking different groups two-by-two as the dependent variable, the only significant difference was found in the comparison between G2 and G3 with higher TMT-B scores more in favor of belonging to G2 (OR=0.946; P=0.003). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that, after controlling for anxiety and depression symptoms, patients treated with chemotherapy have significantly poorer outcomes on the DSST and TMT-B than treatment-naïve cancer patients and healthy controls. However, when taking confounding factors into account, the difference only persisted between patients undergoing chemotherapy and healthy controls. These findings are in favor of a multifactor cognitive impairment in patients with cancer partially related to chemotherapeutic treatment.

Abstract
Objective This narrative review aims to (1) identify neuropsychological tests for assessing cognitive function impairment in patients with cancer, specifically in the domains of attention and memory, (2) summarize the characteristics of these tests, including cognitive function domains, test content, readability, and psychometric quality, and (3) evaluate the feasibility of each test in cancer care. Methods Data sources include published test manuals, documents from official web pages, and published journal articles. Results Our study identified eight neuropsychological tests that are most frequently used to assess the attention and memory domains of objective cognitive function in patients with breast cancer. These tests include the California Verbal Learning Test, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure, CNS Vital Signs, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Wechsler Memory Scale, and Trail Making Test. They demonstrate acceptable evidence of psychometric quality and varying degrees of feasibility. Test feasibility is influenced by factors such as short testing time, brevity and comprehensiveness, clear cognitive domain distinctions, availability of normative data, minimal practice effects, ease of administration, and limited attention-span requirements. These attributes determine a test's feasibility for use in cancer care. Among the evaluated measures, the California Verbal Learning Test for memory, the Trail Making Test for attention, and the CNS Vital Signs for comprehensive assessment emerge as the most practical choices for cancer care. Conclusions The assessment and management of cognitive function impairment are crucial for enhancing the quality of life in cancer survivors. Nurses should possess knowledge of assessment tools for early detection and the ongoing monitoring of this symptom's progression.

Abstract
Subjective and objective cognitive impairments in Breast Cancer Survivors (BCS) often do not correlate. One important contribution to the reported disparities may be the reliance on mean-based cognitive performance. Cognitive intra-individual variability (IIV) may provide important insights into these reported disparities. Cognitive IIV refers to the fluctuation in performance for an individual on either one cognitive task across a trial or dispersed across tasks within a neuropsychological test battery. The purpose of this systematic review was to search for and examine the literature on cognitive IIV in BCS. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) approach was used to search for all articles related to cognitive IIV in BCS. MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase, and Scopus databases were searched using detailed search terms and strategies. Initially, 164 articles were retrieved but only 4 articles met the criteria for this systematic review. BCS differed from healthy controls in similar ways across the four studies, generally demonstrating similar performance but showing increased cognitive IIV for the more difficult tasks. Differences were enhanced later during chemotherapy. The four studies provide support for cognitive IIV as a useful measure to detect the subtle objective cognitive change often reported by BCS but frequently not detected by standard normed-based cognitive testing. Unexpectedly, measures of cognitive IIV were not consistently associated with self-reported measures of cognition.

Abstract
Among the potential adverse effects of breast cancer treatment, chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) has gained increased attention in the past years. In this review, we provide an overview of the literature regarding CRCI in breast cancer, focusing on three main aspects. The first aspect relates to the molecular mechanisms linking individual drugs commonly used to treat breast cancer and CRCI, which include oxidative stress and inflammation, reduced neurogenesis, reduced levels of specific neurotransmitters, alterations in neuronal dendrites and spines, and impairment in myelin production. The second aspect is related to the clinical characteristics of CRCI in patients with breast cancer treated with different drug combinations. Data suggest the incidence rates of CRCI in breast cancer vary considerably, and may affect more than 50% of treated patients. Both chemotherapy regimens with or without anthracyclines have been associated with CRCI manifestations. While cross-sectional studies suggest the presence of symptoms up to 20 years after treatment, longitudinal studies confirm cognitive impairments lasting for at most 4 years after the end of chemotherapy. The third and final aspect is related to possible therapeutic interventions. Although there is still no standard of care to treat CRCI, several pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches have shown interesting results. In summary, even if cognitive impairments derived from chemotherapy resolve with time, awareness of CRCI is crucial to provide patients with a better understanding of the syndrome and to offer them the best care directed at improving quality of life.

Abstract
Objective: To assess and correlate overall quality of life and the cognitive function of adult patients with hematologic cancer subjected to autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantations up to three years after treatment.
Materials and method: A longitudinal, observational, and analytical study was conducted with 55 patients in a reference hospital in Latin America, from September 2013 to February 2019, with the Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30, analyzed with the Spearman’s correlation coefficient and Generalized Linear Mixed Model tests.
Results: Overall quality of life in autologous and allogeneic transplantations presented a decline in the pancytopenia phase (59.3 and 55.3, respectively). There was impairment of the cognitive function in the autologous group in post-transplantation after two years (61.90) and, in the allogeneic group (74), in pancytopenia. In the autologous group, a positive (0.76) and significant (p < 0.04) correlation is observed between the cognitive domain and quality of life in post-transplantation after two years. In the allogeneic group, there was a positive (0.55) and significant (p < 0.00) correlation from 180 days after transplantation.
Conclusions: Quality of life and the cognitive function present impairment and there is a correlation after the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for both groups: autologous and allogeneic.

Abstract
Cancer- and treatment-related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD) is a common challenge faced by patients diagnosed with non-central nervous system (CNS) cancer. It has become increasingly recognized that multiple factors likely play a role in these symptoms, including the cancer disease process, systemic treatments (e.g., chemotherapy and endocrine therapies), and risk factors that may predispose an individual to both cancer and cognitive dysfunction. As the field has evolved, advanced neuroimaging techniques have been applied to better understand the neural correlates of CRCD. This review focuses on structural neuroimaging findings related to CRCD in adult non-CNS cancer populations, including examination of gray matter volume/density and white matter integrity differences between cancer patients and comparison groups, as well as emerging findings regarding structural network abnormalities. Overall, this literature has demonstrated consistent findings of reduced gray matter volume/density and white matter integrity in cancer patients relative to comparison groups. These are most prominent in individuals treated with chemotherapy, though alterations have also been noted in those treated with anti-estrogen and androgen-deprivation therapies. Alterations in gray and white matter structural network connectivity have also been identified. These structural abnormalities have been observed most prominently in frontal and temporal brain regions, and have been shown to correlate with subjective and objective cognitive function, as well as with physiological and clinical variables, helping to inform understanding of CRCD mechanisms. To date, however, structural neuroimaging techniques have not been utilized in systematic studies of potential CRCD treatments, suggesting a potentially fruitful avenue for future research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cancer and chemotherapy are correlated with brain functional and structural changes in cancer patients, which may lead to cognitive dysfunction. However, little is known about the structural abnormalities of brain in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The aim of this study was to explore the topological properties within the brain white matter network of NSCLC patients prior to chemotherapy. METHODS To explore the neurobiological biomarkers of NSCLC, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were acquired in 24 non-nervous system metastatic NSCLC patients and 25 matched healthy controls. The topological properties of the brain structural networks of NSCLC were measured by the parameters of local and global efficiency. RESULTS Treatment-naïve NSCLC patients showed cognitive and emotional deficits. In addition, NSCLC patients also exhibited decreased global efficacy in the left inferior frontal gyrus (triangular part), left inferior frontal gyrus (orbital part), right rolandic operculum, right gyrus rectus, right lenticular nucleus (putamen), left superior temporal gyrus and right inferior temporal gyrus. Decreased local efficacy were found in the left middle frontal gyrus (orbital part) and left superior temporal gyrus in NSCLC patients. Moreover, the aberrant brain regions were associated with the impaired cognitiion and emotion of NSCLC patients. CONCLUSION Overall our results suggested that altered local and global efficiency of brain white matter network were associated with cancer-induced cognitive and emotional deficits of NSCLC patients. These findings demonstrated that disrupted topological characteristics of the brain network might underlie the impaired cognition and emotion in NSCLC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many patients with brain tumours exhibit mild to severe (neuro)cognitive impairments at some point during the course of the disease. Social cognition, as an instance of higher-order cognitive functioning, specifically enables initiation and maintenance of appropriate social interactions. For individuals being confronted with the diagnosis of a brain tumour, impairment of social function represents an additional burden, since those patients deeply depend on support and empathy provided by family, friends and caregivers. METHODS The present study explores the scientific landscape on (socio)cognitive functioning in brain tumour patients by conducting a comprehensive bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer. The Web of Science Core Collection database was examined to identify relevant documents published between 1945 and 2019. RESULTS A total of 664 English titles on (socio)cognitive functions in patients with brain tumours was retrieved. Automated textual analysis revealed that the data available so far focus on three major topics in brain tumour patients: cognitive functions in general and in paediatric cases, as well as psychological factors and their influence on quality of life. The focus of research has gradually moved from clinical studies with cognitive functions as one of the outcome measures to investigations of interactions between cognitive functions and psychological constructs such as anxiety, depression or fatigue. Medical, neurological and neuropsychological journals, in particular neuro-oncological journals published most of the relevant articles authored by a relatively small network of well interconnected researchers in the field. CONCLUSION The bibliometric analysis highlights the necessity of more research on social cognition in brain tumour patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Cognitive decline is frequently reported after hospitalisation in the contexts of surgery, delirium and critical care. The question not adequately addressed is whether all types of acute hospitalisations increase the risk of cognitive decline. As acute hospitalisations are common in the elderly, who are also vulnerable to cognitive decline, this possible association is of significant concern. RECENT FINDINGS This review summarises cognitive outcomes from recent observational studies investigating acute hospitalisation (emergent and elective) in older age adults. Studies were identified from searching Medline, Embase and PsycINFO databases and citations lists. The highest incidence of cognitive decline has been reported following critical care admissions and admissions complicated by delirium, although all types of acute hospitalisations are implicated. Age is the most consistent risk factor for cognitive decline. Several etiological and therapeutic aspects are being investigated, particularly the measurement of inflammatory biomarkers and treatment with anti-inflammatory medications. SUMMARY Acute hospitalisation for any reason appears to increase the risk of cognitive decline in older adults, but the cause remains elusive. Future research must clarify the nature and modifiers of posthospitalisation cognitive change, a priority in the face of an ageing population.
