Influence of aliphatic amide terminals on the thermoresponsive properties of hyperbranched polyethylenimines

Hyperbranched polyglycerol derivatives exhibiting normal or abnormal thermoresponsive behaviours in water: facile preparation and investigation by turbidimetry and fluorescence techniques

Polymers exhibiting an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour, in which increase in the polymer concentration in water leads to an increase in the phase transition temperature, are few, and no plausible strategy has been addressed to prepare these polymers. For illuminating a feasible common strategy to prepare polymers with an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour, in this study, we systematically prepared a series of hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) derivatives through a facile esterification reaction between HPG and aliphatic acids having different carbon numbers (X). Turbidimetry measurements demonstrate that thermoresponsive HPGs can be obtained only when HPGs are conjugated with aliphatic units of X ≤ 8. The conjugation of HPG with aliphatic units of X ≤ 4 resulted in thermoresponsive HPGs with a normal thermoresponsive behaviour. For the preparation of thermoresponsive HPGs with an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour, X should be controlled in the range of 5-8. Fluorescence measurements with nile red as the fluorescent probe demonstrate that the existence of relatively strong hydrophobic interaction is a key factor to ensure that the polymer exhibits an abnormal thermoresponsive behaviour in water. Moreover, turbidimetry and fluorescence techniques are complementary for measuring the phase transition behaviour and suitable for different polymer concentration regions.

Flocculation of flotation tailings using thermosensitive polymers

The key feature of thermosensitive polymers is the reversible transition between the hydrophilic and hydrophopic forms depending on the temperature. Although the main research efforts are focused on their application in different kinds of drug delivery systems, this phenomenon also allows one to precisely control the stability of solid-liquid dispersions. In this paper research on the application of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) copolymers in processing of minerals is presented. In the experiments tailings from flotation plant of one of the coal mines of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A. (Poland) were used. A laser particle sizer Fritsch Analysette 22 was used in order to determine the Particle Size Distribution (PSD). It was proved that there are some substantial issues associated with the application of thermosensitive polymers in industrial practice which may exclude them from the common application. High salinity of suspension altered the value of Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST). Moreover, the co-polymers used in research proved to be efficient flocculating agents without any temperature rise. Finally, the dosage needed to achieve steric stabilization of suspension was greatly beyond economic justification.

Improved epoxy thermosets by the use of poly(ethyleneimine) derivatives

Epoxy resins are commonly used as thermosetting materials due to their excellent mechanical properties, high adhesion to many substrates and good heat and chemical resistances. This type of thermosets is intensively used in a wide range of fields, where they act as fiber-reinforced materials, general-purpose adhesives, high-performance coatings and encapsulating materials. These materials are formed by the chemical reaction of multifunctional epoxy monomers forming a polymer network produced through an irreversible way. In this article the improvement of the characteristics of epoxy thermosets using different hyperbranched poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) derivatives will be explained.
