Infestation with the parasitic nematode Philometra ovata does not impair behavioral sexual competitiveness or odor attractiveness of the male European minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus)

Unclear host taxonomy hinders parasite studies: An up-to-date checklist of the protozoan and metazoan parasites of Phoxinus minnows (Teleostei: Leuciscidae)

Phoxinus minnows are small freshwater fish found throughout Eurasia. The taxonomy of this genus is still under investigation, and new species are regularly described. They are frequently introduced outside their native range due to their use as live bait for angling, and such fish introductions can have diverse impacts on the recipient areas. Before the rise in interest regarding the diversity of this genus in the past 15 years, studies carried out on their biology and ecology reported their findings for the Eurasian minnow Phoxinus phoxinus Linnaeus, 1758, which was then considered ubiquitous. A parasites checklist for Phoxinus minnows has yet to be published, and the recent progress on the taxonomy of this genus has enabled us to propose a reassignment of parasite records to their proper host. The most thoroughly studied potential species were the North European species Phoxinus sp. 7 sensu Palandačić et al. 2017, Phoxinus isetensis, and P. phoxinus. We were able to highlight a gap in knowledge for numerous species that have received little-to-no attention in terms of parasitology. Systematic molecular identification of Phoxinus minnows should be conducted when studying their parasites, as a reliable identification of the host is vital in parasitology research. Future research will certainly reveal a species-specific composition of the parasitofauna occurring in Phoxinus, especially among widespread parasites such as Gyrodactylus and Diplostomum. Such specificities could even become tools for assessing the introduction routes of Phoxinus species.

Ornaments indicate parasite load only if they are dynamic or parasites are contagious

Choosing to mate with an infected partner has several potential fitness costs, including disease transmission and infection-induced reductions in fecundity and parental care. By instead choosing a mate with no, or few, parasites, animals avoid these costs and may also obtain resistance genes for offspring. Within a population, then, the quality of sexually selected ornaments on which mate choice is based should correlate negatively with the number of parasites with which a host is infected ("parasite load"). However, the hundreds of tests of this prediction yield positive, negative, or no correlation between parasite load and ornament quality. Here, we use phylogenetically controlled meta-analysis of 424 correlations from 142 studies on a wide range of host and parasite taxa to evaluate explanations for this ambiguity. We found that ornament quality is weakly negatively correlated with parasite load overall, but the relationship is more strongly negative among ornaments that can dynamically change in quality, such as behavioral displays and skin pigmentation, and thus can accurately reflect current parasite load. The relationship was also more strongly negative among parasites that can transmit during sex. Thus, the direct benefit of avoiding parasite transmission may be a key driver of parasite-mediated sexual selection. No other moderators, including methodological details and whether males exhibit parental care, explained the substantial heterogeneity in our data set. We hope to stimulate research that more inclusively considers the many and varied ways in which parasites, sexual selection, and epidemiology intersect.

Parasite-Mediated Mate Preferences in a Cooperatively Breeding Rodent

Females of many species discriminate among males when choosing a mate and this can bear indirect and direct benefits including the avoidance of parasite transmission from infested males. In rodents, this may be mediated by androgen hormones that affect the expression of urinary odors. Female choosiness may also vary with a female’s infestation status, with infested females being less choosy. In the current study we tested the preference of cooperatively breeding highveld mole-rat (Cryptomys hottentotus hottentotus) females for male urinary odors from healthy males and those naturally infested with a cestode (Mathevotaenia sp.). Thirty females (15 healthy, 15 infested) were allowed to explore a Y-maze with urine samples from healthy and infested males and the frequency of entering choice arms and chambers as well as the duration spend with each odor sample was recorded. Infestation status did neither affect male body mass, urinary testosterone, nor cortisol levels or the body condition of females. Although overall female activity was not affected by infestation status, infested females entered choice arms and chambers significantly less frequently than healthy females. Surprisingly, healthy females preferred odors from infested males while the opposite was true for infested females, independent of male hormone levels. As the study species lives in groups that tend to share the same infestation status, we suggest that highveld mole-rat females may exhibit a preference for unfamiliar odors, possibly as an indicator of genetic diversity, rather than discriminate between infestation status of males. Similar mechanisms may also play a role in other social species.

The attraction trick: males in early stages of disease become more chemically attractive to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) females

In aquatic systems, olfaction plays an important role in acquiring information about the social environment and influences important behaviours in various contexts, including predator avoidance, foraging, aggressive and reproductive behaviour and mate selection. As the presence of diseases might modify individual odour, fish may use the variability in conspecifics' odours as an indicator of the health status and infectious load of potential mates. Here, female Nile tilapia were tested for their ability to detect infected males and discriminate between bacterial infected and uninfected individuals by means of chemical cues. Females were allowed to choose between the odours of males infected by Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria and uninfected males. The findings show that female Nile tilapia initially showed a preference for infected males in terms of their first choice in a dichotomous choice test, but the total duration of time spent with the stimulus from infected males was not longer than that for the uninfected males. This may indicate that males at early stages of infection, i.e., without advanced clinical signs of infection, emit odours that allow them to enjoy the benefits of socialization when the infection is not yet detected by conspecifics. Thus, in the context of reproduction, males might attract female partners and have some chance of reproducing, before being avoided.
