SRHandNet: Real-time 2D Hand Pose Estimation with Simultaneous Region Localization

This paper introduces a novel method for real-time 2D hand pose estimation from monocular color images, which is named as SRHandNet. Existing methods can not time efficiently obtain appropriate results for small hand. Our key idea is to simultaneously regress the hand region of interests (RoIs) and hand keypoints for a given color image, and iteratively take the hand RoIs as feedback information for boosting the performance of hand keypoints estimation with a single encoder-decoder network architecture. Different from previous region proposal network (RPN), a new lightweight bounding box representation, which is called region map, is proposed. The proposed bounding box representation map together with hand keypoints heatmaps are combined into the unified multi-channel feature maps, which can be easily acquired with only one forward network inference and thus improve the runtime efficiency of the network. Our proposed SRHandNet can run at 40fps for hand bounding box detection and up to 30fps accurate hand keypoints estimation under the desktop environment without implementation optimization. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. State-of-the-art results are also achieved out competing all recent methods.

A Combined Fully Convolutional Networks and Deformable Model for Automatic Left Ventricle Segmentation Based on 3D Echocardiography

Segmentation of the left ventricle (LV) from three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) plays a key role in the clinical diagnosis of the LV function. In this work, we proposed a new automatic method for the segmentation of LV, based on the fully convolutional networks (FCN) and deformable model. This method implemented a coarse-to-fine framework. Firstly, a new deep fusion network based on feature fusion and transfer learning, combining the residual modules, was proposed to achieve coarse segmentation of LV on 3DE. Secondly, we proposed a method of geometrical model initialization for a deformable model based on the results of coarse segmentation. Thirdly, the deformable model was implemented to further optimize the segmentation results with a regularization item to avoid the leakage between left atria and left ventricle to achieve the goal of fine segmentation of LV. Numerical experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the challenging CETUS benchmark in the segmentation accuracy and has a potential for practical applications.

A Combination of Shape and Texture Features for Classification of Pulmonary Nodules in Lung CT Images

Classification of malignant and benign pulmonary nodules is important for further treatment plan. The present work focuses on the classification of benign and malignant pulmonary nodules using support vector machine. The pulmonary nodules are segmented using a semi-automated technique, which requires only a seed point from the end user. Several shape-based, margin-based, and texture-based features are computed to represent the pulmonary nodules. A set of relevant features is determined for the efficient representation of nodules in the feature space. The proposed classification scheme is validated on a data set of 891 nodules of Lung Image Database Consortium and Image Database Resource Initiative public database. The proposed classification scheme is evaluated for three configurations such as configuration 1 (composite rank of malignancy "1" and "2" as benign and "4" and "5" as malignant), configuration 2 (composite rank of malignancy "1","2", and "3" as benign and "4" and "5" as malignant), and configuration 3 (composite rank of malignancy "1" and "2" as benign and "3","4" and "5" as malignant). The performance of the classification is evaluated in terms of area (A z) under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The A z achieved by the proposed method for configuration-1, configuration-2, and configuration-3 are 0.9505, 0.8822, and 0.8488, respectively. The proposed method outperforms the most recent technique, which depends on the manual segmentation of pulmonary nodules by a trained radiologist.

Automatic computation of left ventricular volume changes over a cardiac cycle from echocardiography images by nonlinear dimensionality reduction

Curve of left ventricular (LV) volume changes throughout the cardiac cycle is a fundamental parameter for clinical evaluation of various cardiovascular diseases. Currently, this evaluation is often performed manually which is tedious and time consuming and suffers from significant interobserver and intraobserver variability. This paper introduces a new automatic method, based on nonlinear dimensionality reduction (NLDR) for extracting the curve of the LV volume changes over a cardiac cycle from two-dimensional (2-D) echocardiography images. Isometric feature mapping (Isomap) is one of the most popular NLDR algorithms. In this study, a modified version of Isomap algorithm, where image to image distance metric is computed using nonrigid registration, is applied on 2-D echocardiography images of one cycle of heart. Using this approach, the nonlinear information of these images is embedded in a 2-D manifold and each image is characterized by a symbol on the constructed manifold. This new representation visualizes the relationship between these images based on LV volume changes and allows extracting the curve of the LV volume changes automatically. Our method in comparison to the traditional segmentation algorithms does not need any LV myocardial segmentation and tracking, particularly difficult in the echocardiography images. Moreover, a large data set under various diseases for training is not required. The results obtained by our method are quantitatively evaluated to those obtained manually by the highly experienced echocardiographer on ten healthy volunteers and six patients which depict the usefulness of the presented method.
