Characteristics of good clinical teachers in anesthesiology from medical students' perspective: a qualitative descriptive study

PURPOSE

Learning needs are influenced by the stage of learning and medical specialty. We sought to investigate the characteristics of a good clinical teacher in anesthesiology from the medical students' perspective.

METHODS

We conducted a qualitative descriptive study to analyze written comments of medical students about their clinical teachers' performances. Our analysis strategy was the inductive content analysis method. The results are reported as a descriptive summary with major themes as the final product.

RESULTS

Our study identified four themes. The first theme, teachers' individual characteristics, includes characteristics that are usually more related to students' subjective experiences and feelings. The second theme, teachers' characteristics that advance student learning, seems to be one of the most important contributions to learning because it increases the practice of procedural skills. The third theme, teachers' characteristics that prepare students for success, shows characteristics that facilitate students' learning by promoting a healthy and safe environment. Lastly, the fourth theme, characteristics related to teaching approaches, includes characteristics that can guide clinical teachers more objectively.

CONCLUSION

Our analysis of the written comments of medical students identified many characteristics of a good clinical teacher that were organized in four different themes. These themes contribute to expand on existing understandings of clinical teaching in the anesthesiology clerkship environment, and add new interpretations that can be reflected upon and explored by other clinical educators.

Developing experts in health professions education research: knowledge politics and adaptive expertise

The field of health professions education research draws inspiration from many disciplines, creating a dynamic socio-cultural context that is replete with contests over research rigour and quality. These knowledge politics are never definitively resolved. Thus, an important question that any graduate program established within the field has to contend with is what should constitute expertise in HPER. In this paper we explore interrelated contextual, conceptual and procedural dimensions of expertise to substantiate our suggestions for a core curriculum for graduate students in health professions education. We argue that an expert in health professions education research should have both an appreciation of when knowledge politics are relevant to their research process as part of their procedural knowledge and also an awareness of why these politics can affect their work as part of their conceptual knowledge.

Health Professionals' Experience of Barriers in Empowering People with Spinal Cord Injury: a Qualitative Inquiry

Introduction: Empowering an individual with spinal cord injury as far as possible is an experience with various social and cultural aspects. This study investigated health professionals' experiences of barriers in empowering individuals with spinal cord injuries.

Methods: This was a qualitative inquiry with a conventional content analysis approach. A number of 11 healthcare professionals who were members of Iran Spinal Cord Injuries Research National Network or had been working in a related research center for at least three years participated in the study. A purposive sampling method was applied until reaching data saturation. The data were collected by semi-structured interviews. The collected data were managed with MAXQDA software version 13.

Results: Three main themes as barriers in empowering people with spinal cord injury emerged: 1) Lack of patient-and-family-centered education, 2) Failure in providing sufficient healthcare services and 3) Inappropriate setting for using rehabilitation services.

Conclusion: These finding can help policymakers to provide better social facilities and more support services for people with spinal cord injuries and their families. Further research is needed to investigate barriers to empowerment from the perspective of individuals with SCI and their families.
