Understanding the determinants of vaccine hesitancy in the United States: A comparison of social surveys and social media

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted governments worldwide to implement a range of containment measures, including mass gathering restrictions, social distancing, and school closures. Despite these efforts, vaccines continue to be the safest and most effective means of combating such viruses. Yet, vaccine hesitancy persists, posing a significant public health concern, particularly with the emergence of new COVID-19 variants. To effectively address this issue, timely data is crucial for understanding the various factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy. While previous research has largely relied on traditional surveys for this information, recent sources of data, such as social media, have gained attention. However, the potential of social media data as a reliable proxy for information on population hesitancy, especially when compared with survey data, remains underexplored. This paper aims to bridge this gap. Our approach uses social, demographic, and economic data to predict vaccine hesitancy levels in the ten most populous US metropolitan areas. We employ machine learning algorithms to compare a set of baseline models that contain only these variables with models that incorporate survey data and social media data separately. Our results show that XGBoost algorithm consistently outperforms Random Forest and Linear Regression, with marginal differences between Random Forest and XGBoost. This was especially the case with models that incorporate survey or social media data, thus highlighting the promise of the latter data as a complementary information source. Results also reveal variations in influential variables across the five hesitancy classes, such as age, ethnicity, occupation, and political inclination. Further, the application of models to different MSAs yields mixed results, emphasizing the uniqueness of communities and the need for complementary data approaches. In summary, this study underscores social media data's potential for understanding vaccine hesitancy, emphasizes the importance of tailoring interventions to specific communities, and suggests the value of combining different data sources.

Statin Twitter: Human and Automated Bot Contributions, 2010 to 2022

BACKGROUND

Many individuals eligible for statin therapy decline treatment, often due to fear of adverse effects. Misinformation about statins is common and drives statin reluctance, but its prevalence on social media platforms, such as Twitter (now X) remains unclear. Social media bots are known to proliferate medical misinformation, but their involvement in statin-related discourse is unknown. This study examined temporal trends in volume, author type (bot or human), and sentiment of statin-related Twitter posts (tweets).

METHODS AND RESULTS

We analyzed original tweets with statin-related terms from 2010 to 2022 using a machine learning-derived classifier to determine the author's bot probability, natural language processing to assign each tweet a negative or positive sentiment, and manual qualitative analysis to identify statin skepticism in a random sample of all tweets and in highly influential tweets. We identified 1 155 735 original statin-related tweets. Bots produced 333 689 (28.9%), humans produced 699 876 (60.6%), and intermediate probability accounts produced 104 966 (9.1%). Over time, the proportion of bot tweets decreased from 47.8% to 11.3%, and human tweets increased from 43.6% to 79.8%. The proportion of negative-sentiment tweets increased from 27.8% to 43.4% for bots and 30.9% to 38.4% for humans. Manually coded statin skepticism increased from 8.0% to 19.0% for bots and from 26.0% to 40.0% for humans.

CONCLUSIONS

Over the past decade, humans have overtaken bots as generators of statin-related content on Twitter. Negative sentiment and statin skepticism have increased across all user types. Twitter may be an important forum to combat statin-related misinformation.

COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in China: An Analysis of Reasons through Mixed Methods

This study aims to investigate the causes of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among the Chinese population. The LDA model and content analysis were used to analyze the content of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy expressed by the Chinese on Weibo from 2020 to 2022, the leading causes of vaccine hesitancy, and the changes in the reasons for vaccine hesitancy over time. The study found that when the Chinese expressed vaccine hesitancy, it usually involved themes such as information access (18.59%), vaccination services (13.91%), and physical illness (13.24%), and topics such as vaccination process (6.83%), allergic diseases (6.59%), and international news (6.43%). Constraints (35.48%), confidence (17.94%), and calculation (15.99%) are the leading causes of vaccine hesitancy on Weibo. These findings provide a comprehensive picture of how the Chinese express vaccine hesitancy in social media and the reasons and changes for vaccine hesitancy, which can help inspire public health experts, health organizations, or governments in various countries to improve the phenomenon of vaccine hesitancy.

Developing an evidence-based TISM: an application for the success of COVID-19 Vaccination Drive

The study illustrates an application of evidence data for performing Total Interpretive Structural Modeling (TISM). TISM is widely used to analyze the critical success factors or inhibitors and their interlinkages. This study uses learning from evidence data, specifically social media analytics, to identify the relationship between the elements. Thus, it leads to the advancement of the TISM-P methodology with evidence-based TISM (TISM-E). This study uses Twitter as a source of evidence data. Further, 2,60,297 tweets were used to illustrate the process of TISM-E. The paper demonstrates the application of TISM-E for the success of the COVID-19 vaccination drive. The pandemic effects are long-term; therefore, the hierarchical model developed shows a sustainable approach for vaccinating maximum population. Further, the framework developed will ensure the distribution efficacy of vaccines. In addition, it will aid practitioners in developing future vaccination policies. The enhanced model provides evidence for polarity (positive/negative) of relationships and can help to build propositions for theory development. The study contributes to healthcare, modeling research, and graph-theoretic literature.
