Solid-state anaerobic co-digestion of organic fraction of municipal waste and sawdust: impact of co-digestion ratio, inoculum-to-substrate ratio, and total solids

An overview of the occurrence, impact of process parameters, and the fate of antibiotic resistance genes during anaerobic digestion processes

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have emerged as a significant global health threat, contributing to fatalities worldwide. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and livestock farms serve as primary reservoirs for these genes due to the limited efficacy of existing treatment methods and microbial adaptation to environmental stressors. Anaerobic digestion (AD) stands as a prevalent biological treatment for managing sewage sludge and manure in these settings. Given the agricultural utility of AD digestate as biofertilizers, understanding ARGs' fate within AD processes is essential to devise effective mitigation strategies. However, understanding the impact of various factors on ARGs occurrence, dissemination, and fate remains limited. This review article explores various AD treatment parameters and correlates to various resistance mechanisms and hotspots of ARGs in the environment. It further evaluates the dissemination and occurrence of ARGs in AD feedstocks and provides a comprehensive understanding of the fate of ARGs in AD systems. This review explores the influence of key AD parameters such as feedstock properties, pretreatments, additives, and operational strategies on ARGs. Results show that properties such as high solid content and optimum co-digestion ratios can enhance ARG removal, while the presence of heavy metals, microplastics, and antibiotics could elevate ARG abundance. Also, operational enhancements, such as employing two-stage digestion, have shown promise in improving ARG removal. However, certain pretreatment methods, like thermal hydrolysis, may exhibit a rebounding effect on ARG levels. Overall, this review systematically addresses current challenges and offers future perspectives associated with the fate of ARGs in AD systems.

Leachate post-treatment by electrocoagulation process: Effect of polarity switching and anode-to-cathode surface area

In the electrocoagulation process, passivation or corrosion of the electrodes is one of the biggest challenges that cause a drop in treatment effectiveness. In this study, the effect of polarity switching was investigated, for the first time, in an attempt to enhance electrocoagulation treatment's ability to remove chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color from pretreated landfill leachate. Moreover, the ratio of the anode to cathode surface area and rotating electrode were examined in light of experimental results. The effect of different parameters, including the stirring speed, initial leachate pH, electrical current density, anode to cathode surface area ratio, and polarity switching time on system efficiency, was evaluated using the one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) classical method. According to the results, polarity switching resulted in an almost 18% increase in COD removal, 14% increase in color removal, 13% decrease in electrical energy consumption (EEC), 51% decrease in the specific sludge production (TSS/COD), and improved electrode performance compared to non-polarity switching mode. The findings of this research showed the highest COD and color removal efficiencies, which were 34% and 67%, respectively, in a 120 min period, a stirring speed of 135 rpm, the initial leachate pH of 9, the current density of 14.4 mA/cm², the anode/cathode surface ratio of 0.35, and the polarity switching time of 300 s.

Dry anaerobic digestion of ammoniated straw: Performance and microbial characteristics

This paper explores the influence of the mixing ratio of ammoniated straw to biogas residue on the stability and methane yield of dry anaerobic digestion and analyzes the structure of the microbial community with digestion time. Five reactors containing ammoniated straw and swine manure biogas residue at ratios of 5:1, 4:2, 3:3, 2:4 and 1:5 (total solids) were constructed, and neither total ammonia nitrogen nor free ammonia nitrogen was inhibited. Three reactors produced gas successfully. The reactor with a ratio of 3:3 (R3-3) yielded the best methane production, with a cumulative methane production of 115.13 mL/(g·VS_added). Analysis of the R3-3 microbial community showed that bacteria were dominant species. Archaea, mainly Methanosarcina, played an important role in anaerobic digestion and methane production. Methanobacterium, with high acid tolerance, was positively related to total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), playing a key role in preventing the acidification of the anaerobic digestion system.

Supplementation of Carbon-Based Conductive Materials and Trace Metals to Improve Biogas Production from Apple Pomace

Due to its high water and organic contents, management of apple pomace (AP) poses several waste management challenges on the apple juice and cider producing industries. Bioconversion of AP into biogas provides an excellent possibility to reduce the environmental challenge faced in the management of AP waste along with producing renewable energy in the form of methane. This study investigated the effect of carbon-based conductive materials (biochar and graphene) and trace metals supplementation to improve biogas production from AP. The results indicate that supplementation of biochar, trace metals, and graphene significantly improves the biogas production from AP. Trace metal and biochar supplementation at a COD concentration of 6000 mg/L resulted in 7.2% and 13.3% increases in the biogas production, respectively. When trace metals and biochar were supplemented together, the biogas production increased by 22.7%. This synergistic effect was also observed at the COD concentration of 12,000 mg/L. The improvement in the biogas formation was significantly higher for graphene supplemented reactors (27.8%). Moreover, biochar and trace metals supplementation also led to 19.6% and 23.0% increases in the methane yield relative to the reactor fed only with AP, respectively. These results suggest anaerobic digestion supplemented with carbon-based conductive materials and trace metals is a viable option for valorizing apple pomace.

High-Solid Anaerobic Digestion: Reviewing Strategies for Increasing Reactor Performance

High-solid and solid-state anaerobic digestion are technologies capable of achieving high reactor productivity. The high organic load admissible for this type of configuration makes these technologies an ideal ally in the conversion of waste into bioenergy. However, there are still several factors associated with these technologies that result in low performance. The economic model based on a linear approach is unsustainable, and changes leading to the development of a low-carbon model with a high degree of circularity are necessary. Digestion technology may represent a key driver leading these changes but it is undeniable that the profitability of these plants needs to be increased. In the present review, the digestion process under high-solid-content configurations is analyzed and the different strategies for increasing reactor productivity that have been studied in recent years are described. Percolating reactor configurations and the use of low-cost adsorbents, nanoparticles and micro-aeration seem the most suitable approaches to increase volumetric production and reduce initial capital investment costs.
