Data Fusion-Based Musculoskeletal Synergies in the Grasping Hand

The hypothesis that the central nervous system (CNS) makes use of synergies or movement primitives in achieving simple to complex movements has inspired the investigation of different types of synergies. Kinematic and muscle synergies have been extensively studied in the literature, but only a few studies have compared and combined both types of synergies during the control and coordination of the human hand. In this paper, synergies were extracted first independently (called kinematic and muscle synergies) and then combined through data fusion (called musculoskeletal synergies) from 26 activities of daily living in 22 individuals using principal component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA). By a weighted linear combination of musculoskeletal synergies, the recorded kinematics and the recorded muscle activities were reconstructed. The performances of musculoskeletal synergies in reconstructing the movements were compared to the synergies reported previously in the literature by us and others. The results indicate that the musculoskeletal synergies performed better than the synergies extracted without fusion. We attribute this improvement in performance to the musculoskeletal synergies that were generated on the basis of the cross-information between muscle and kinematic activities. Moreover, the synergies extracted using ICA performed better than the synergies extracted using PCA. These musculoskeletal synergies can possibly improve the capabilities of the current methodologies used to control high dimensional prosthetics and exoskeletons.

Signal processing algorithms for SSVEP-based brain computer interface: State-of-the-art and recent developments

Over past two decades, steady-state evoked potentials (SSVEP)-based brain computer interface (BCI) systems have been extensively developed. As we all know, signal processing algorithms play an important role in this BCI. However, there is no comprehensive review of the latest development of signal processing algorithms for SSVEP-based BCI. By analyzing the papers published in authoritative journals in nearly five years, signal processing algorithms of preprocessing, feature extraction and classification modules are discussed in detail. In addition, other aspects existed in this BCI are mentioned. The following key problems are solved. (1) In recent years, which signal processing algorithms are frequently used in each module? (2) Which signal processing algorithms attract more attention in recent years? (3) Which modules are the key to signal processing in BCI field? This information is very important for choosing the appropriate algorithms, and can also be considered as a reference for further research. Simultaneously, we hope that this work can provide relevant BCI researchers with valuable information about the latest trends of signal processing algorithms for SSVEP-based BCI systems.

Dynamic Modeling of Common Brain Neural Activity in Motor Imagery Tasks

Evaluation of brain dynamics elicited by motor imagery (MI) tasks can contribute to clinical and learning applications. The multi-subject analysis is to make inferences on the group/population level about the properties of MI brain activity. However, intrinsic neurophysiological variability of neural dynamics poses a challenge for devising efficient MI systems. Here, we develop a time-frequency model for estimating the spatial relevance of common neural activity across subjects employing an introduced statistical thresholding rule. In deriving multi-subject spatial maps, we present a comparative analysis of three feature extraction methods: Common Spatial Patterns, Functional Connectivity, and Event-Related De/Synchronization. In terms of interpretability, we evaluate the effectiveness in gathering MI data from collective populations by introducing two assumptions: (i) Non-linear assessment of the similarity between multi-subject data originating the subject-level dynamics; (ii) Assessment of time-varying brain network responses according to the ranking of individual accuracy performed in distinguishing distinct motor imagery tasks (left-hand vs. right-hand). The obtained validation results indicate that the estimated collective dynamics differently reflect the flow of sensorimotor cortex activation, providing new insights into the evolution of MI responses.

To Explore the Potentials of Independent Component Analysis in Brain-Computer Interface of Motor Imagery

This paper is focused on the experimental approach to explore the potential of independent component analysis (ICA) in the context of motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI). We presented a simple and efficient algorithmic framework of ICA-based MI BCI (ICA-MIBCI) for the evaluation of four classical ICA algorithms (Infomax, FastICA, Jade, and Sobi) as well as a simplified Infomax (sInfomax). Two novel performance indexes, self-test accuracy and the number of invalid ICA filters, were employed to assess the performance of MIBCI based on different ICA variants. As a reference method, common spatial pattern (CSP), a commonly-used spatial filtering method, was employed for the comparative study between ICA-MIBCI and CSP-MIBCI. The experimental results showed that sInfomax-based spatial filters exhibited significantly better transferability in session to session and subject to subject transfer as compared to CSP-based spatial filters. The online experiment was also introduced to demonstrate the practicability and feasibility of sInfomax-based MIBCI. However, four classical ICA variants, especially FastICA, Jade, and Sobi, performed much worse as compared to sInfomax and CSP in terms of classification accuracy and stability. We consider that conventional ICA-based spatial filtering methods tend to be overfitting while applied to real-life electroencephalogram data. Nevertheless, the sInfomax-based experimental results indicate that ICA methods have a great space for improvement in the application of MIBCI. We believe that this paper could bring forth new ideas for the practical implementation of ICA-MIBCI.
