Emulsions are dispersed systems widely used in various industries. In recent years, Raman spectroscopy (RS), as a spectroscopic technique, has gained much attention for measuring and monitoring emulsions. In this review, we explore the use of RS on emulsion structures and emulsification, important reactions that use emulsions such as emulsion polymerization, catalysis and cascading reactions, as well as various applications of emulsions. We explore how RS is used in emulsions, reactions and applications. RS is a powerful and versatile tool for studying emulsions, but there are also challenges in using RS to monitor emulsion processes, especially if they are rapid or volatile. We also explore these challenges and difficulties, as well as possible designs that can be used to overcome them.

Optimization of mesoporous titanosilicate catalysts for cyclohexene epoxidation via statistically guided synthesis

An efficient approach to improve the catalytic activity of titanosilicates is introduced. The Doehlert matrix (DM) statistical model was utilized to probe the synthetic parameters of mesoporous titanosilicate microspheres (MTSM), in order to increase their catalytic activity with a minimal number of experiments. Synthesis optimization was carried out by varying two parameters simultaneously: homogenizing temperature and surfactant weight. Thirteen different MTSM samples were synthesized in two sequential 'matrices' according to Doehlert conditions and were used to catalyse the epoxidation of cyclohexene with tert-butyl hydroperoxide. The samples (and the corresponding synthesis conditions) with superior catalytic activity in terms of product yield and selectivity were identified. In addition, this approach revealed the limiting values of each synthesis parameter, beyond which the material becomes catalytically ineffective. This study demonstrates that the DM approach can be broadly used as a powerful and time-efficient tool for investigating the optimal synthesis conditions of heterogeneous catalysts.

Hollow-structured mesoporous materials: chemical synthesis, functionalization and applications

Hollow-structured mesoporous materials (HMMs), as a kind of mesoporous material with unique morphology, have been of great interest in the past decade because of the subtle combination of the hollow architecture with the mesoporous nanostructure. Benefitting from the merits of low density, large void space, large specific surface area, and, especially, the good biocompatibility, HMMs present promising application prospects in various fields, such as adsorption and storage, confined catalysis when catalytically active species are incorporated in the core and/or shell, controlled drug release, targeted drug delivery, and simultaneous diagnosis and therapy of cancers when the surface and/or core of the HMMs are functionalized with functional ligands and/or nanoparticles, and so on. In this review, recent progress in the design, synthesis, functionalization, and applications of hollow mesoporous materials are discussed. Two main synthetic strategies, soft-templating and hard-templating routes, are broadly sorted and described in detail. Progress in the main application aspects of HMMs, such as adsorption and storage, catalysis, and biomedicine, are also discussed in detail in this article, in terms of the unique features of the combined large void space in the core and the mesoporous network in the shell. Functionalization of the core and pore/outer surfaces with functional organic groups and/or nanoparticles, and their performance, are summarized in this article. Finally, an outlook of their prospects and challenges in terms of their controlled synthesis and scaled application is presented.
