Recent advances in the cyclization of N-heterocycles: the role of enabling techniques (review)

Microwaves as "Co-Catalysts" or as Substitute for Catalysts in Organophosphorus Chemistry

The purpose of this review is to summarize the importance of microwave (MW) irradiation as a kind of catalyst in organophosphorus chemistry. Slow or reluctant reactions, such as the Diels-Alder cycloaddition or an inverse-Wittig type reaction, may be performed efficiently under MW irradiation. The direct esterification of phosphinic and phosphonic acids, which is practically impossible on conventional heating, may be realized under MW conditions. Ionic liquid additives may promote further esterifications. The opposite reaction, the hydrolysis of P-esters, has also relevance among the MW-assisted transformations. A typical case is when the catalysts are substituted by MWs, which is exemplified by the reduction of phosphine oxides, and by the Kabachnik-Fields condensation affording α-aminophosphonic derivatives. Finally, the Hirao P-C coupling reaction may serve as an example, when the catalyst may be simplified under MW conditions. All of the examples discussed fulfill the expectations of green chemistry.

Ultrasonically improved semi-hydrogenation of alkynes to (Z-)alkenes over novel lead-free Pd/Boehmite catalysts

This paper reports the application of ultrasound in the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes over two novel Pd/Boehmite catalysts. The semi-hydrogenations of phenylacetylene, diphenylacetylene and 2-butyne-1,4-diol have either been investigated in an ultrasonic bath under atmospheric hydrogen pressure, or in an ultrasonic horn reactor under 0.1-0.5MPa hydrogen pressure. Alkyne hydrogenation was suppressed by sonication under atmospheric hydrogen pressure, but promoted by sonication under 0.1MPa of hydrogen pressure. Sonication increased selectivity towards the semi-hydrogenated products in both cases. Catalyst loading, hydrogen pressure, temperature and the presence of quinoline, all impacted on hydrogenation rate, activity and selectivity to semi-hydrogenated products. Palladium leaching from the catalyst was evaluated in ethanol and hexane both under plain stirring and sonication.

Synthesis of Pyrrolidines and Pyrroles via Tandem Amination/Cyanation/Alkylation and Amination/Oxidation Sequences

Starting from a primary amine-tethered alkyne 1, a copper-catalyzed three-component tandem amination/cyanation/alkylation sequence gives α-CN pyrrolidine 6 in good yield and regioselectivity. Also, a silver mediated tandem amination/oxidation of a secondary amine-tethered alkyne 7 produces functionalized pyrrole 8 in good yield. All reactions were conducted in one pot without any protection/deprotection steps.
