Effects of Exercise on Depression and Anxiety. A Comparison to Transdiagnostic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Association between physical activity and comorbid anxiety/depression in 46 low- and middle-income countries

BACKGROUND

Evidence on the association of low physical activity (PA) with depression or anxiety is well established. Yet, evidence on the association between PA and comorbid anxiety/depression remains scarce, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thus, this study explored this relationship among adults aged ≥18 years from 46 LMICs.

METHODS

Cross-sectional, community-based data were analyzed from the World Health Survey (WHS). Multivariable multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the association between low PA and comorbid anxiety/depression with no anxiety or depression as the base category.

RESULTS

237,023 participants [mean (SD) age = 38.4 (16.0) years; 50.8 % female] were included in the analysis. Low PA was significantly associated with depression alone (OR = 1.33; 95%CI = 1.12-1.57) and anxiety alone (OR = 1.37; 95%CI = 1.23-1.53), while the OR was highest among those with comorbid anxiety/depression (OR = 1.75; 95%CI = 1.52-2.01).

CONCLUSION

Low PA is associated with particularly increased odds for comorbid anxiety/depression. Increasing PA may have a beneficial effect on the prevention of comorbid anxiety/depression. However, future longitudinal research establishing the direction of this relationship is warranted.

Effects of an Immersive Virtual Reality Exergame on University Students' Anxiety, Depression, and Perceived Stress: Pilot Feasibility and Usability Study

Background

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of students with depression, anxiety, and perceived stress. A solution that has been increasingly used for improving health and well-being is exergaming. The effects and acceptability of exergames have been studied widely but mostly with older adults. The feasibility and usability of exergames among university students, especially those of immersive virtual reality (iVR) exergames, remain unexplored.

Objective

This study aimed to explore the feasibility of a 6-week iVR exergame–based intervention in reducing anxiety, depression, and perceived stress among university students and to examine the usability and acceptability of such games.

Methods

A total of 31 university students were recruited to participate in a 6-week study in which they needed to play a boxing-style iVR exergame called FitXR (FitXR Limited) twice per week (30 minutes per session). Their anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory), depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II), and perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale) levels were measured before and after intervention.

Results

A total of 15 participants completed the 6-week study. Our results suggested that participants’ mean depression scores decreased significantly from 8.33 (SD 5.98) to 5.40 (SD 5.14) after the intervention (P=.01). In addition, most participants (14/15, 93%) believed that the iVR exergame has good usability. Furthermore, most participants (14/15, 93%) were satisfied with the iVR gameplay experience and would play the iVR exergame again in the future. Of the 15 participants, 11 (73%) would recommend the iVR exergame to their friends.

Conclusions

The results gained from this study show that the iVR exergame has good usability, is highly acceptable, and has the potential to reduce depression levels among university students.

The effectiveness of an online interdisciplinary intervention for mental health promotion: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

There is an urgent need for efficacious interventions to combat the global mental health crisis, and mental health promotion and primary prevention approaches are paramount. The aim of this study is to examine whether an online interdisciplinary intervention that incorporates evidence-based strategies from the disciplines of Lifestyle Medicine and Positive Psychology improves measures of mental health and emotional wellness.

METHODS

A randomized controlled trial with a wait-list control (N = 425, aged 46.97 ± 14.5, 69.9% females) was conducted in Australia and New Zealand. The intervention group participated in a 10-week online interdisciplinary intervention. Primary outcome measures of mental health and emotional wellness were taken at baseline (Week 1), post-intervention (Week 12), and 12 weeks post-intervention (Week 24). The wait-list control completed the same assessments.

RESULTS

General Linear Modelling analyses indicated that the intervention group experienced significantly greater improvements than the wait-list control group over time in all outcome measures: mental health (F(319) = 7.326, p = 0.007) and vitality (F(319) = 9.445, p = 0.002) subscales of the Short Form Survey (SF-36); depression (F(319) = 7.841, p = 0.005), anxiety (F(319) = 4.440, p = 0.36) and stress (F(319) = 12.494, p < 0.001) scales of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21); and life satisfaction (F(319) = 8.731, p = 0.003) as measured by the Satisfaction With Life Scale. Within the intervention group, significant improvements were observed from Week 1 to 12 in all outcome measures: mental health (10%, t(167) = - 6.423), p < 0.001, dz = 0.50), vitality (22%, t(167) = - 7.043, p < 0.001, dz = 0.54), depression (- 41%, t(167) = 6.189, p < 0.001, dz = 0.48), anxiety (- 38%, t(167) = 5.030, p < 0.001, dz = 0.39), stress (- 31%, t(167) = 6.702, p < 0.001, dz = 0.52) and life satisfaction (8%, t(167) = - 6.199, p < 0.001, dz = 0.48). Improvements in the outcome measures remained significant in the intervention group at 12 weeks post-intervention.

CONCLUSION

The online interdisciplinary intervention improved measures of mental health and emotional wellness suggesting that such interventions may be useful for mental health promotion and prevention. Effects of physical exercise and stress on hippocampal CA1 and dentate gyrus synaptic transmission and long-term potentiation in adolescent and adult Wistar rats

It is commonly recognized that physical exercise positively affects several CNS regions and improves cognitive abilities. For example, exercise is associated with an increase in neurogenesis and facilitation of long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. Conversely, animal models for depression are associated with a decrease in neurogenesis and a reduction of long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. Although exercise could be a viable option in the treatment of some forms of depression, the mechanisms responsible for such improvements have not been elucidated. In this study, we examine hippocampal function using electrophysiological field recordings in CA1 and dentate gyrus to study baseline synaptic transmission and long-term potentiation in adolescent and adult rats prenatally exposed to the glucocorticoid dexamethasone. One group of animals was allowed to run voluntarily for 10 or 21 days using an exercise wheel before the experiments, and the control group was prevented from running (i.e. the exercise wheel was locked). In adult saline-exposed animals, exercise was associated with increased long-term potentiation in the dentate gyrus. Unexpectedly, in dexamethasone-exposed animals, dentate gyrus long-term potentiation was facilitated, whereas long-term potentiation in CA1 was unaffected by prenatal dexamethasone or by 10 or 21 days of voluntary running. Irrespective of age, prenatal dexamethasone and running had limited effects on synaptic transmission and presynaptic release in CA1 and dentate gyrus. In summary, running facilitates dentate gyrus long-term potentiation in adult animals that resembles the effects of prenatal dexamethasone.
