Analysis of Nausea in Clinical Studies of Lubiprostone for the Treatment of Constipation Disorders

Effectiveness and safety of lubiprostone after switching from stimulant laxatives in elderly patients with chronic constipation

Background and Aim

Stimulant laxatives may cause electrolyte abnormalities, dehydration, and abdominal pain; their long-term use can lead to tolerance and subsequent refractory constipation. We investigated the effectiveness, safety, and quality of life after switching from stimulant laxatives to lubiprostone in elderly patients with chronic constipation (CC).

Methods

This multicenter, interventional, open-label, single-arm, before-and-after comparison study enrolled 99 Japanese patients aged 65-90 years with CC who took stimulant laxatives for ≥2 weeks prior to switching to lubiprostone monotherapy.

Results

The mean ± SD spontaneous defecations at Week 1 of 7.8 ± 6.2 times/week was not significantly different from that at baseline (8.3 ± 4.7). Spontaneous defecations were significantly reduced at Weeks 2 (-1.5 ± 4.0, P < 0.001) and 4 (-1.5 ± 3.7, P < 0.001). The Bristol Stool Form Scale score did not change from baseline (4.7 ± 0.9) at Weeks 1 (4.5 ± 1.3) or 4 (4.3 ± 1.3), but it did at Week 2 (4.3 ± 1.5, P < 0.05). The Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life questionnaire score increased (0.36 ± 0.07, P < 0.001) after 28 days. Nausea was the only symptom that worsened from baseline and was the most frequently reported adverse drug reaction (15.2%).

Conclusion

Switching to lubiprostone monotherapy for CC was not associated with significant concerns in short-term spontaneous defecation frequency and safety, but it might affect the efficacy and patient quality of life over 2 weeks. Careful treatment strategies facilitating gradual switching to lubiprostone monotherapy may be needed in patients using stimulant laxatives.

The panel agreed on 10 recommendations for the pharmacological management of CIC in adults. Based on available evidence, the panel made strong recommendations for the use of polyethylene glycol, sodium picosulfate, linaclotide, plecanatide, and prucalopride for CIC in adults. Conditional recommendations were made for the use of fiber, lactulose, senna, magnesium oxide, and lubiprostone.

DISCUSSION

This document provides a comprehensive outline of the various over-the-counter and prescription pharmacological agents available for the treatment of CIC. The guidelines are meant to provide a framework for approaching the management of CIC; clinical providers should engage in shared decision making based on patient preferences as well as medication cost and availability. Limitations and gaps in the evidence are highlighted to help guide future research opportunities and enhance the care of patients with chronic constipation.

Analysis of the impact on efficacy of lubiprostone dose reduction to manage adverse events in the treatment of chronic constipation in Japan

OBJECTIVE

To compare outcomes between two doses of lubiprostone in patients with chronic constipation (CC), to assess whether dose reduction affects efficacy.

METHODS

This open-label exploratory study involved 146 patients with CC treated initially with lubiprostone 24 mcg twice daily for a planned duration of 4 weeks. Patients who experienced adverse events (AEs) had their dose reduced to 12 mcg twice daily (for 4 weeks).

RESULTS

Lubiprostone dose was unchanged in 104 patients and reduced due to AEs in 42 patients. Significant differences in the mean number of bowel movements per week favored the dose-reduced group at Week 1 and end of follow-up. No between-group differences were observed over time for mean number of days per week with bowel movements or mean Bristol Stool Form Scale scores. Symptoms of abdominal bloating, strained defecation, and sensation of incomplete evacuation improved in both groups. Before dose reduction, nausea was reported by 64.3% and diarrhea by 45.2% of patients in the dose-reduced group; after dose reduction, no patients reported nausea and one patient reported diarrhea.

CONCLUSION

Dose reduction of lubiprostone reduced the incidence of AEs, with no compromise to efficacy, and may be a suitable approach for patients who develop AEs during treatment.

Probiotics in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Review of Their Therapeutic Role

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic collection of symptoms and lowers the quality of life. The management of such patients has always involved mitigating the symptoms produced by this disorder. This article reviews the role of probiotics in IBS by compiling various studies to deduce the possible symptomatic relief that probiotics may provide to IBS patients. Given the encouraging part of probiotics in abundant other gastrointestinal conditions, this article focuses on understanding the specific functional effects (if any) that are brought about by adding probiotics in patients with different types of IBS such as IBS with predominant constipation, IBS with predominant diarrhea, and even the unclassified type of IBS. The purpose of analyzing the role of probiotics is to study the changes brought about by them at the level of the gut microbiota in patients suffering from IBS, as this may prove to be of prime importance in managing such conditions with time. This article has also furnished an overview of the pathogenesis, diagnostic criteria, treatment modalities, sources of probiotics, and their therapeutic significance in IBS patients.

DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC IDIOPATHIC CONSTIPATION: A NARRATIVE REVIEW FROM A BRAZILIAN EXPERT TASK FORCE

ABSTRACT Background Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is a condition that widely affects the global population, represents relevant healthcare resource utilization and costs, and impacts the individual’s well-being. Objective To review the consensus of expert societies and published guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of CIC in adults, seeking to assist reasoning and decision-making for medical management of patients with CIC and provide a practical reference material. Methods A Brazilian medical task force searched the scientific literature in the following electronic databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, SciELO, EMBASE and Cochrane, using the following descriptors: chronic constipation, diagnosis, management of chronic constipation. In addition, a review of articles on the mechanism of action, safety, and efficacy of therapeutic options available in Brazil was carried out. Results The diagnostic approach and the understanding of the pathophysiology present in CIC are essential items to indicate the appropriate therapy and to understand the ecosystem of the patient’s needs. Conclusion CIC is a common condition in adults, occurring more frequently in the elderly and in women. Proper management is defined by detailed medical history and physical examination, together with appropriate therapeutics, regardless pharmacological or not, and depending on the best moment of indication. This way, the impact on quality of life is also optimized.

Evaluation of efficacy and safety of lubiprostone in patients with chronic constipation

OBJECTIVES

Lubiprostone is an apical type 2 chloride channel activator approved for the treatment of chronic constipation (CC), and nausea is the most common adverse symptom. However, the associated factors with the efficacy and the precise mechanism of nausea remain unclear. The aim of this study is to characterize clinical backgrounds related with the efficacy and the adverse symptoms of lubiprostone.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Subjects were patients with CC who were prescribed lubiprostone from April 2017 to October 2019. The efficacy and safety of lubiprostone were retrospectively examined using the electronic medical record.

RESULTS

Hundred and fifty-five patients (76 men, and mean age 69) were evaluated. Lubiprostone was effective in 74 patients (47.8%), and the discontinuation due to adverse in 34 patients (21.9%). including nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain in 16, 12 and 3 patients, respectively. The efficacy was significantly associated with gender, age, body mass index (BMI), diabetes mellitus, hypertension, calcium channel blockers and antipsychotics. In multivariate analysis, the efficacy was significantly associated with men (odds ratio [OR], 3.21; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.42-7.27) and BMI (OR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.02-1.28). The incidence of nausea was higher in patients under 65 years old, and hypertension was the significant protective factor for nausea.

CONCLUSIONS

Lubiprostone was effective for men patients with CC, and hypertension seems to be the protective factor for nausea.

Focus on Pharmacotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation

Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation is a common disorder that significantly impairs quality of life. There are now multiple classes of therapeutics that have been shown via rigorous clinical testing to improve the abdominal and bowel symptoms attributed to irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. These include the secretagogues (lubiprostone, linaclotide, plecanatide, tenapenor) and the prokinetic agent tegaserod. This article highlights the pivotal evidence for these agents and most recent treatment guidance from the major North American gastroenterological societies. When pharmaceuticals are used, a patient-specific approach based on efficacy, safety, tolerability, access, and affordability is recommended.

Safety of elobixibat and lubiprostone in Japanese patients with chronic constipation: a retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

We aimed to discuss and compare reported adverse reactions and drug add-ons associated with elobixibat and lubiprostone use in chronic constipation treatment, as the safety of these drugs has not been well examined in post-marketing clinical settings.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

In this retrospective cohort study, using records of community pharmacies in Japan, we identified new users of elobixibat and lubiprostone. The Japan Pharmaceutical Association sent questionnaires regarding baseline and event data to community pharmacists. The incidence of events and hazard ratio (HR) associated with the study drugs were evaluated.

RESULTS

New users of elobixibat (n = 979) and lubiprostone (n = 829) were identified (mean age: 74 and 77 years; females: 59% and 53%, respectively). Although the crude risk ratio of adverse events for elobixibat was 0.79 (95% confidence interval: 0.63-0.99), there was no significant difference in the HR for any of the common events, including drug add-ons (n ≥ 5), compared with those for lubiprostone.

CONCLUSION

No new safety concerns have been raised in relation to elobixibat and lubiprostone use for treating chronic constipation, although the HR of different events varied. Further larger-scale study is needed as the estimates for events of small numbers were unstable.

Elachi Lemon (Citrus limon) Peel and Pulp: Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, Anticoagulant Activities, Bioactive Compounds, Minerals, and Heavy Metals

Background:

According to a number of previous studies, citrus fruits are rich in phytochemicals, minerals and bioactive compounds.

Objective:

The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticoagulant activities, phytonutrients, bioactive compounds, mineral and heavy metals in the peel and pulp of Elachi lemon (Citrus limon).

Methods:

Phytochemical screening was performed to estimate the total polyphenol, flavonoid, tannin, reducing sugar, total protein and vitamin C contents. High performance liquid chromatography was performed to determine the concentrations of phenolics and ascorbic acid. Antioxidant activities were evaluated by measuring 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by the disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Besides estimating heavy metals and minerals, activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and prothrombin time (PT) were observed for detecting anticoagulant activity.

Results:

In the case of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, the pulp was found to be richer. Both the peel and pulp showed similar anticoagulant activities. Among the phytonutrients, protein content was richer in the peel than in the pulp. Catechin, rutin, tannic, gallic and vanillic acids were detected in the peel, whereas in pulp quercetin, tannic and gallic acids were found. Pb, Cr, Cd were present in a negligible amount whereas, Co, Cu and Fe were high in both the peel and the pulp.

Conclusion:

This study exhibits that both the peel and the pulp of Citrus limon are a rich source of antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticoagulant, minerals and various bioactive compounds with nutritional values.

Open-label study to evaluate the treatment continuation rate after a dose reduction of lubiprostone due to onset of adverse events

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the continuation rate with a reduced lubiprostone dose (12 mcg twice daily, BD) after the onset of adverse events (AEs) in patients with chronic constipation (CC).

METHODS

In this exploratory, open-label, multicenter study, patients with CC received lubiprostone 24 mcg BD and the dose was reduced to 12 mcg BD in subjects experiencing AEs. The primary objective was the continuation rate after dose reduction due to nausea/vomiting. Secondary objectives included the continuation rate after dose reduction due to diarrhea/any AE and efficacy, including changes in number of weekly bowel movements and Bristol Stool Form Scale.

RESULTS

Of the 146 patients included in the study, 42 (28.8%) received lubiprostone 12 mcg BD (dose-reduced group) due to any AE. Thirty-six (85.7%) subjects in the dose-reduced group continued treatment and completed the study. 22/27 (81.5%) and 17/19 (89.5%) patients in whom the dose was reduced due to nausea/vomiting or diarrhea, respectively, continued treatment. There was no clinically relevant difference in efficacy after dose reduction.

CONCLUSION

These results suggest that treatment withdrawal due to AEs associated with lubiprostone 24 mcg BD could be minimized in patients with CC after dose reduction to 12 mcg BD, thus resulting in improved long-term outcomes.

[Efficacy and Safety of Linaclotide in Elderly Patients]

The efficacy and safety of linaclotide in elderly patients are poorly understood. Herein, we aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of linaclotide in elderly patients in real-world setting. We retrospectively enrolled consecutive patients who started linaclotide therapy at Sapporo Medical University Hospital from October 1, 2017 to December 31, 2019. The efficacy and safety of linaclotide were examined in relation to various factors, including age (<65 or ≥65 years) and dose (0.25 or 0.5 mg/d). Fifty-two patients were enrolled, 60% of whom were over 65 years old and 40% were female. Thirty-six patients received a linaclotide dose of 0.25 mg/d. The most common side effect was diarrhea, but there was no difference in the incidence of diarrhea between the elderly (64.5%) and non-elderly patients (42.9%, p=0.130). No significant difference was observed with respect to improvement in constipation in the elderly (83.9%) and non-elderly patients (71.4%, p=0.318). Additionally, the difference in efficacy of linaclotide in patients who received a reduced dose (80.6%) vs. those who received the recommended dose (75.0%) was not statistically significant (p=0.719). Multivariate analysis revealed that age, gender, and dose were not associated with diarrhea induced by linaclotide treatment. However, concurrent treatment with constipation-inducing medications [odds ratio (OR) 5.79, p=0.047] and linaclotide monotherapy (OR 11.1, p=0.040) were both risk factors contributing to diarrhea. Linaclotide is effective and safe for use in elderly patients. The incidence of diarrhea may increase when linaclotide is administered alone or concurrently used with medications that cause constipation.

ACG Clinical Guideline: Management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly prevalent, chronic disorder that significantly reduces patients' quality of life. Advances in diagnostic testing and in therapeutic options for patients with IBS led to the development of this first-ever American College of Gastroenterology clinical guideline for the management of IBS using Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology. Twenty-five clinically important questions were assessed after a comprehensive literature search; 9 questions focused on diagnostic testing; 16 questions focused on therapeutic options. Consensus was obtained using a modified Delphi approach, and based on GRADE methodology, we endorse the following: We suggest that a positive diagnostic strategy as compared to a diagnostic strategy of exclusion be used to improve time to initiating appropriate therapy. We suggest that serologic testing be performed to rule out celiac disease in patients with IBS and diarrhea symptoms. We suggest that fecal calprotectin be checked in patients with suspected IBS and diarrhea symptoms to rule out inflammatory bowel disease. We recommend a limited trial of a low fermentable oligosaccharides, disacchardies, monosaccharides, polyols (FODMAP) diet in patients with IBS to improve global symptoms. We recommend the use of chloride channel activators and guanylate cyclase activators to treat global IBS with constipation symptoms. We recommend the use of rifaximin to treat global IBS with diarrhea symptoms. We suggest that gut-directed psychotherapy be used to treat global IBS symptoms. Real-World Comparison of Elobixibat and Lubiprostone Treatment in Patients with Chronic Constipation: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis

INTRODUCTION

Elobixibat is a new laxative, but its efficacy and adverse events (AEs) are insufficiently examined compared with those of other laxatives. Hence, by propensity score (PS) matching, we compared the effects and AEs between elobixibat and lubiprostone.

METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed 1,887 Japanese patients with chronic constipation (CC) treated at our hospital between October 2013 and April 2020. Enrolled patients were divided into three treatment groups, namely, elobixibat (10 mg daily) (E10 group, n = 293), lubiprostone (24 μg daily) (L24 group, n = 772), and lubiprostone (48 μg daily) (L48 group, n = 822), as their first treatment. We then investigated the changes on the weekly average number of spontaneous bowel movements, stool consistency scores (SCSs), and AEs starting from the baseline until the end of the 2-week treatment. To adjust for patients' background, we performed one-to-one nearest neighbor matching without replacement between elobixibat- and lubiprostone-treated patients according to the individual estimated PSs.

RESULTS

After treatment, for SCSs, both the L24 and L48 groups significantly improved compared with the E10 group (p < 0.05), but their stools were soft (Bristol Stool Form Scale: 4.8). Notably, the E10 group had less frequent AEs than the L24 group (26 [9.0%] vs. 43 [14.8%], p = 0.03). Particularly, nausea was significantly less in the E10 group than that in the L48 group (2 [0.7%] vs. 7 [2.4%], p = 0.01).

CONCLUSION

Elobixibat is a beneficial drug for patients with mildly symptomatic CC and is safe to use, given its few AEs.

Systematic review with meta-analysis: lubiprostone efficacy on the treatment of patients with constipation

BACKGROUND

Lubiprostone is a type 2 chloride channel activator that has been shown to be efficacious and safe in the treatment for chronic constipation.

OBJECTIVE

To systematically review randomized clinical trials (RCTs) assessing efficacy of lubiprostone for patients with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC), irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation (IBS-C) and opioid-induced constipation (OIC).

METHODS

Searches were conducted in PubMed, LILACS, Cochrane Collaboration Database, and Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. Lubiprostone RCTs reporting outcomes of spontaneous bowel movements (SBM) and abdominal pain or discomfort were deemed eligible. Meta-analysis was performed calculating risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals, using the Mantel-Haenszel method and random effects model.

RESULTS

Searches yielded 109 records representing 93 non-duplicate publications, and 11 RCTs (978 CIC, 1,366 IBS-C, 1,300 OIC, total = 3,644) met inclusion criteria. Qualitative synthesis showed that for CIC patients, lubiprostone is superior to placebo in terms of SBM outcomes. Meta-analysis for CIC was feasible for full responder and SBM within 24h rates, indicating superiority of lubiprostone over placebo. For IBS-C, lubiprostone was significantly superior for all SBM outcomes in follow-ups ranging from 1 week-3 months. In terms of abdominal pain, lubiprostone provided significantly better symptoms relief, particularly after 1 month of treatment. For OIC, lubiprostone was more effective than placebo for both SBM and discomfort measures.

CONCLUSION

Our findings demonstrated that lubiprostone is superior to placebo in terms of SBM frequency for CIC, IBS-C and OIC. In terms of abdominal symptoms, the most pronounced effect was seen for abdominal pain in IBS-C patients.

Constipation and Fecal Incontinence in the Elderly

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

To review the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, and management of primary constipation and fecal incontinence in the elderly.

RECENT FINDINGS

Among elderly people, 6.5%, 1.7%, and 1.1% have functional constipation, constipation-predominant IBS, and opioid-induced constipation. In elderly people, the number of colonic enteric neurons and smooth muscle functions is preserved; decreased cholinergic function with unopposed nitrergic relaxation may explain colonic motor dysfunction. Less physical activity or dietary fiber intake and postmenopausal hormonal therapy are risk factors for fecal incontinence in elderly people. Two thirds of patients with fecal incontinence respond to biofeedback therapy. Used in combination, loperamide and biofeedback therapy are more effective than placebo, education, and biofeedback therapy. Vaginal or anal insert devices are another option. In the elderly, constipation and fecal incontinence are common and often distressing symptoms that can often be managed by addressing bowel disturbances. Selected diagnostic tests, prescription medications, and, infrequently, surgical options should be considered when necessary.

Risk Factors for Adverse Events in Patients with Chronic Constipation Following Lubiprostone Administration

INTRODUCTION

Lubiprostone is an effective treatment of chronic constipation (CC). However, as with other stimulant or osmotic laxatives, adverse events (AEs) can make it difficult to continue treatment. This article investigates AE risk factors associated with lubiprostone.

METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed all 1,338 Japanese patients with CC treated at our hospital from October 2013 to July 2017. All patients were diagnosed with constipation as defined by the Roma III criteria. Enrolled patients received lubiprostone orally (24 or 48 μg daily), after which we investigated the incidence of AEs. The causative factors for diarrhea and nausea, the most common AEs, were examined by the backward logistic regression model.

RESULTS

Two hundred eight (15.5%) experienced at least 1 AE. No serious AEs were associated with the study drug. The AEs reported by >1% of patients overall were diarrhea (6.1%) and nausea (4.2%). We performed a multivariate logistic regression using a backward variable selection method to investigate AE risk factors. Factors associated with higher incidence of diarrhea were patient age of 65 years or more (odds ratio: [95% confidence interval]; p value) (2.09: [1.05-4.16]; 0.035). Factors associated with greater likelihood of nausea included female gender (1.99: [1.10-3.61]; 0.023), and the chief complaint was a patient complaining of abdominal pain and fullness (2.07: [1.01-4.22]; 0.046).

CONCLUSIONS

Understanding AE risk factors can help avoid unnecessary AEs and promote more effective treatment.

Chronic idiopathic constipation in adults: epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and clinical management

Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, with a global prevalence of 14%. It is commoner in women and its prevalence increases with age. There are three subtypes of CIC: dyssynergic defaecation, slow transit constipation and normal transit constipation, which is the most common subtype. Clinical assessment of the patient with constipation requires careful history taking, in order to identify any red flag symptoms that would necessitate further investigation with colonoscopy to exclude colorectal malignancy. Screening for hypercalcaemia, hypothyroidism and coeliac disease with appropriate blood tests should be considered. A digital rectal examination should be performed to assess for evidence of dyssynergic defaecation. If this is suspected, further investigation with high resolution anorectal manometry should be undertaken. Anorectal biofeedback can be offered to patients with dyssynergic defaecation as a means of correcting the associated impairment of pelvic floor, abdominal wall and rectal functioning. Lifestyle modifications, such as increasing dietary fibre, are the first step in managing other causes of CIC. If patients do not respond to these simple changes, then treatment with osmotic and stimulant laxatives should be trialled. Patients not responding to traditional laxatives should be offered treatment with prosecretory agents such as lubiprostone, linaclotide and plecanatide, or the 5-HT4 receptor agonist prucalopride, where available. If there is no response to pharmacological treatment, surgical intervention can be considered, but it is only suitable for a carefully selected subset of patients with proven slow transit constipation.

Lubiprostone in the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation: an update on health-related quality of life and patient-reported outcomes

Chronic idiopathic constipation, if inadequately treated, can be bothersome with a detrimental effect on patients’ quality of life (QOL). This may also result in frequent health care visits, increasing the burden of this ailment’s medical cost. Management strategies, focused on lifestyle changes, include increased exercise, a high-fiber diet, and toilet training. Pharmacologic options include fiber supplementation, laxatives, serotonergic agents, and prosecretory agents such as lubiprostone. In this review, we were able to conclude that lubiprostone, when used for chronic idiopathic constipation, has a significantly beneficial effect on both patients’ symptoms and their QOL. In multiple randomized controlled trials, it has been found to have increased the number of spontaneous bowel movements at different time endpoints. Corresponding improvements were also observed for abdominal bloating, discomfort, stool frequency, and straining symptoms among patients.

Management Options for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is associated with diverse pathophysiologic mechanisms. These mechanisms include increased abnormal colonic motility or transit, intestinal or colorectal sensation, increased colonic bile acid concentration, and superficial colonic mucosal inflammation, as well as epithelial barrier dysfunction, neurohormonal up-regulation, and activation of secretory processes in the epithelial layer. Novel approaches to treatment include lifestyle modification, changes in diet, probiotics, and pharmacotherapy directed to the motility, sensation, and intraluminal milieu of patients with IBS. Despite recent advances, there is a need for development of new treatments to relieve pain in IBS without deleterious central or other adverse effects.

Guidelines on the management of irritable bowel syndrome: In memory of Professor Witold Bartnik

These guidelines constitute an update of the previous "Recommendations on the management of irritable bowel syndrome" issued in 2008. They have been developed by a Task Force organized by the Governing Board of the Polish Society of Gastroenterology. They discuss, with particular emphasis on new scientific data covering papers published since 2008, the aetiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic principles and criteria for the diagnosis, and recommendations for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The English-language acronym for the syndrome (IBS) has become popular in medical and popular scientific language. It is also widely recognized by patients who identify with this diagnosis. Therefore, in the discussed guidelines, this is what we will use.
