Groundwater-induced alterations in elemental concentration and interactions in semi-arid soils of the Southern High Plains, USA

Drought and land use/land cover impact on dust sources in Southern Great Plains and Chihuahuan Desert of the U.S.: Inferring anthropogenic effect

Exploring the effects of drought and land use/land cover (LULC) on aeolian dust emission is important to enhance dust models to account for anthropogenic land surface change. Hitherto, there has been no systematic effort to quantitatively estimate associations between LULC and drought with the number of dust point sources as a surrogate for emission on both local and global levels. Previously, we created a dataset of dust emission point sources in the southwestern United States (U.S.) during the years 2001-2016, including a period of extreme drought. However, that work did not investigate the effects of drought on the detected dust point sources. Here, we used that dataset to test the hypothesis that there is a statistically significant association between drought level and LULC that may contribute to the number of dust point sources in the Southern Great Plains and Chihuahuan Desert regions of the U.S. The spatio-temporal analysis showed that the geographic mean center for all the dust points, as well as the majority of the annual geographic mean centers between 2001 and 2016, is located in the Southern High Plains. Areas suffering from severe to exceptional drought tend to attract the annual geographic mean center of dust points. The chi-square analysis results showed a significant association between land cover type (as defined in the National Land Cover Database) and drought level with the number of dust point sources (χ² (6) = 45.54, р < 0.001), thus supporting the proposed hypothesis. Results from this study indicate that human activities in dust-prone regions have clear potential to worsen the negative impacts of drought by changing LULC and increasing erodibility in multiple ways. This study paves the way for future efforts that can utilize more data and conduct more robust statistical analysis of the drought-LULC-dust linkage on both regional and global scales.

Irrigation Water Quality—A Contemporary Perspective

In the race to enhance agricultural productivity, irrigation will become more dependent on poorly characterized and virtually unmonitored sources of water. Increased use of irrigation water has led to impaired water and soil quality in many areas. Historically, soil salinization and reduced crop productivity have been the primary focus of irrigation water quality. Recently, there is increasing evidence for the occurrence of geogenic contaminants in water. The appearance of trace elements and an increase in the use of wastewater has highlighted the vulnerability and complexities of the composition of irrigation water and its role in ensuring proper crop growth, and long-term food quality. Analytical capabilities of measuring vanishingly small concentrations of biologically-active organic contaminants, including steroid hormones, plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, in a variety of irrigation water sources provide the means to evaluate uptake and occurrence in crops but do not resolve questions related to food safety or human health effects. Natural and synthetic nanoparticles are now known to occur in many water sources, potentially altering plant growth and food standard. The rapidly changing quality of irrigation water urgently needs closer attention to understand and predict long-term effects on soils and food crops in an increasingly fresh-water stressed world.

Arsenic Mobility in As-Containing Soils from Geogenic Origin: Fractionation and Leachability

The lithogenic arsenic in soils of the Anllóns River basin (Spain) was quantified, its chemical fractions were determined, and its leachability characteristics were compared under various experimental conditions. Fifty soil samples of C horizons, sampling an area of 50 km2along the river course, were submitted to an exploratory analysis. Pseudo-total arsenic ranged between 2 and 489 mg kg−1. Arsenic leachability using the standard methods DIN 38414-S4 and TCLP was less than 0.25% of pseudo-total As. Then the effect of pH (3, 6, and 9), solid : liquid (S : L) ratio (1 : 10 and 1 : 50), phosphate (10 mM), and contact time (24 and 240 h) on arsenic mobilization was studied in nine soils with the highest As concentration. Arsenic mobilization increased at alkaline pH and lower S : L ratio; the most decisive factor was the addition of phosphate, increasing arsenic leachability up to 1,000 times, and this increased even 2.3 times when the contact time was extended from 24 hours to 240 hours. The results suggest that the mobilization of arsenic may be underestimated in short-term water leaching tests and that the environmental conditions favouring arsenic mobilization should be taken into account for a sound evaluation of the transfer risk of arsenic towards aquatic ecosystems.
