Combining geospatial analyses to optimize quality reference values of rare earth elements in soils

Spatial distribution of rare earth elements and their impact factors in an area with a high abundance of regolith-hosted deposits

Despite the widespread occurrence of regolith-hosted rare earth elements (REEs) across South China, their spatial distribution characteristics in soils and their impact factors remain largely uncertain. This knowledge gap impedes the exploration of regolith-hosted REE deposits and the assessment of the environmental risks associated with REEs. To address this issue, 180 soil samples were collected from Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, a region known for its high abundance of regolith-hosted REEs. Subsequently, the correlations between REE enrichment/fractionation and various factors, i.e., topography, climate conditions, land use, and landform were analysed using the geo-detector method. The results revealed a highly uneven spatial distribution of REEs and their fractionation features with some regions displaying distinct spatial patterns. Elevation was the dominant factor influencing this distribution, and showed strong correlations with the concentrations of REEs, light REEs (LREEs) and heavy REEs (HREEs); the LREE/HREE ratio; and the positive Ce anomaly (δCe). The negative Eu anomaly (δEu) showed a good correlation with rock type. The enrichment and fractionation of REEs indicated a coupling among the abovementioned factors. For REE enrichment, areas with elevations of 138-148 m, precipitation levels of 1553-1574 mm, annual average land surface temperatures of 30.4-30.5 °C, leaf area index values of 22-29 and surface cutting degree of 21.5-29.9 m showed the highest average abundance within each type (scope) of the predominant factors. These findings highlight the key factors affecting REE distribution, thereby aiding the efficient utilization of regolith-hosted REE resources and the evaluation of their environmental risks.

Distribution of rare earth elements in soils of contrasting geological and pedological settings to support human health assessment and environmental policies

Establishing quality reference values (QRVs) for rare earth elements (REEs) in soils is essential for the screening of these emergent contaminants. Currently, Brazil has the second-largest reserve of REEs, but data regarding background concentrations and distributions in soils remain scarce. The aim of this study was to establish the QRVs and assess the spatial distribution of REEs in soils, including REE fractionations and anomalies in (Piauí) state (251,529.186 km²), northeastern Brazil. This study reports the most detailed data on REE geochemistry in Brazilian soils. A total of 243 composite soil samples was collected at 0-20 cm depth. The mean background concentrations in soils followed the abundance of the earth's upper crust: Ce > La > Nd > Pr > Sm > Dy > Gd > Er > Yb > Eu > Tb > Lu. The ∑REEs (mg kg^-1) showed the following order based on the individual mesoregions of Piauí state: Southeast (262.75) > North and Central-North (89.68) > Southwest (40.33). The highest QRVs were observed in the Southeast mesoregion. The establishment of QRVs based on the mesoregion scale improves data representativeness and the monitoring of natural REE values by identifying hot spots. Geostatistical modeling indicated significant local variability, especially in the Southeast mesoregion. The levels of these elements in this spatial zone are naturally higher than the other values across Piauí state and the mesoregion itself and indicate a high potential to exceed the QRVs. Our approach provides much needed data to help strengthen policies for both human health and environmental protection.

Petrology of weathering materials developed on granites in Biou area, North-Cameroon: implication for rare-earth elements (REE) exploration in semi-arid regions

Due to the increasing demand resulting from the use of REE in many fields of human life, a weathering profile developed on granites in the semi-arid region of Biou area (North-Cameroon) has been characterized for rare-earth elements (REE) exploration. The mineralogical compositions of weathered materials were revealed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasmas-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) have been used to determine the geochemical composition of granites and the overlying weathered materials. The S-type and peraluminous granites are constituted by quartz, orthoclase, microcline, plagioclase, biotite, muscovite, pyroxene and opaque minerals. Accessory minerals are probably responsible for the interesting contents in REE + Y and some trace elements (e.g., Zr, Zn, Ba, Rb). The weathering profile show from the bottom to the top: (i) saprolitic horizons; (ii) lower loose clayey horizon; (iii) iron duricrust horizon; (iv) upper loose clayey horizon; (v) and organo-mineral horizon. Some weathered rock fragments remain in the loose clayey and organo-mineral horizons. The mineralogical composition of the weathering materials is dominated by illite, muscovite and feldspar. The low weathering degree of the materials is justified by the climatic and reducing conditions. The large ion lithophiles and ferromagnesian elements (Mg, Fe, V, Cu, Co, Cs Cr, Ni, Sc and Li) which are supposed to be mobile are so much accumulated in the weathering materials. REE show very low degree of fractionation in weathering profile due probably to the lack of good drainage. The whole weathering materials shows high REE + Y contents as its parent rock. Geochemical mass balance and enrichment factor reveal that REE, especially light REE, are so much enriched in the iron duricrust horizon (ion-adsorption REE deposit type). Some heavy REE are also enriched in the lower loose clayey horizon. This first survey has revealed that the weathering materials developed on granites in Biou area are favorable for further REE exploration.

Potentially toxic elements and rare earth elements in sandy soils from the Brazilian Cerrado

This study aims to determine the concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and rare earth elements (REEs) in Brazilian sandy soils under the Cerrado at the Parnaíba-São Francisco Basin transition. We also explored the geochemical correlation between these elements and pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), total organic carbon (TOC), sand, clay, oxides from secondary minerals, and chemical index of alteration for each basin. Mineralogical, physical, and chemical analyses were used to examine PTE and REE geochemistry in six sand soil profiles from the Brazilian Cerrado. The background concentrations of these elements are low, but soils from the Parnaíba Basin have higher concentrations of PTEs than soils from the São Francisco Basin. In soils from the Parnaíba Basin, mainly Al₂O₃ has relevance in the V and Cr geochemistry, as these elements increase with increasing Al₂O₃ content. On the other hand, the REEs have CEC as a soil attribute of higher relevance in the geochemistry of those elements is soils from the Parnaíba Basin, and this relevance divides the TOC, Fe₂O₃, and TiO₂ minerals from the clay fraction. In soils from the São Francisco Basin, the geochemistry of PTEs is possibly associated with kaolinite, especially Cu, V, and Zn. In contrast, the Ba concentration was associated with the presence of feldspar. Unlike soils from the Parnaíba Basin, the REEs do not correlate with the studied soil attributes, except for Ho and Lu. Ho had a positive association with Al₂O₃. Ho and Lu are negatively related to the presence of iron oxides.
