Evolutionary Consequences of Dispersal Ability in Cactus-feeding Insects

Wide-Scale Gene Flow, Even in Insects that have Lost their Flight Ability: Presence of Dispersion Due to a Unique Parasitic Ecological Strategy of Piggybacking Hosts

We focused on Meloe beetles that have lost all flight ability, and conducted molecular phylogeographic analyses based on their mitochondrial DNA COI and nuclear DNA EF1- α regions. Meloe beetles infiltrate bumblebee nests by attaching to bumblebees as they pollinate flowers and thereafter have a unique and specific life history as they complete their life-cycle within the host nest; flight-based dispersal is achieved by piggybacking on bumblebees. In fact, Meloe beetles, which cannot fly, even inhabit remote islands (i.e., "Oceanic Islands"). Regarding four species, i.e., Meloe coarctatus, Meloe proscarabaeus, Meloe violaceus and Meloe corvinus, the conventional morphological classification system based on morphological characteristics was strongly supported by the molecular markers. On the other hand, for two species, Meloe menoko and Meloe auriculatus, it was found that M. menoko may be evaluated as having a paraphyletic relationship with M. auriculatus. Furthermore, two other cryptic, undescribed species were also discovered in this study. One was collected in the Nikko Highland, and inhabited the area sympatrically with M. coarctatus. The other was collected from Hachijo-jima Island. These cryptic species were highly differentiated, independent lineages in terms of mitochondrial and nuclear gene regions. That is to say, a new level of species diversity was revealed among the Meloe beetle species, known for their unique and strange ecological and ethological characteristics.

Loss of flight promotes beetle diversification

The evolution of flight is a key innovation that may enable the extreme diversification of insects. Nonetheless, many species-rich, winged insect groups contain flightless lineages. The loss of flight may promote allopatric differentiation due to limited dispersal power and may result in a high speciation rate in the flightless lineage. Here we show that loss of flight accelerates allopatric speciation using carrion beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae). We demonstrate that flightless species retain higher genetic differentiation among populations and comprise a higher number of genetically distinct lineages than flight-capable species, and that the speciation rate with the flightless state is twice that with the flight-capable state. Moreover, a meta-analysis of 51 beetle species from 15 families reveals higher genetic differentiation among populations in flightless compared with flight-capable species. In beetles, which represent almost one-fourth of all described species, repeated evolution of flightlessness may have contributed to their steady diversification since the Mesozoic era.

The loss of flight in some insect lineages may promote allopatric differentiation and result in a high speciation rate. Here, using the carrion beetle, loss of flight is shown to accelerate allopatric speciation with higher genetic differentiation than for flight-capable species.

Phylogeography of the Cactophilic Drosophila and Other Arthropods Associated with Cactus Necroses in the Sonoran Desert

Studies on the population genetics, phylogenetic relationships, systematics and evolution of arthropods that inhabit necrotic tissue of cacti in the Sonoran Desert of North America are reviewed. These studies have focused upon several species of insects (orders Diptera and Coleoptera) and arachnids (order Pseudoscorpiones). For most taxa studied, little genetic structure and high dispersal ability are found in populations inhabiting the mainland and Baja California peninsula regions of the Sonoran Desert, consistent with the availability of the rotting cactus microhabitat which is patchily distributed and ephemeral. There is evidence, however, that the Gulf of California, which bisects the Sonoran Desert, has played a role in limiting gene flow and promoting speciation in several taxa, including histerid beetles, whereas other taxa, especially Drosophila nigrospiracula and D. mettleri, apparently are able to freely cross the Gulf, probably by taking advantage of the Midriff Islands in the northern Gulf as dispersal “stepping stones”. Genetic evidence has also been found for historical population expansions dating to the Pleistocene and late Pliocene in several taxa. Overall, these studies have provided important insights into how arthropods with different life history traits, but generally restricted to a necrotic cactus microhabitat, have evolved in an environmentally harsh and tectonically active region. In addition, they suggest some taxa for further, and more detailed, hypothesis driven studies of speciation.

Contrasting patterns of spatial genetic structure in sympatric rock-dwelling cichlid fishes

The cichlid fish of Lake Tanganyika in Eastern Africa are a celebrated example of both ecological and species diversification. Because population subdivision is likely to play an important role in the speciation process, understanding how habitat features interact with species' demographic, behavioral and ecological attributes to influence gene flow and population divergence may help explain the causes of high species richness in this and other systems. Here, we test the roles of isolation-by-habitat and isolation-by-distance in generating fine-scale population genetic structure in three sympatric species of habitat-restricted cichlids in Lake Tanganyika. Using multilocus microsatellite genotypes, we contrast patterns of population differentiation in these habitat specialists along a mosaic coastline of both favorable and unfavorable habitat. Despite their close phylogenetic relationship and shared habitat affinity, these species show striking differences in their pattern of genetic subdivision within the same geographical region, suggesting substantially different patterns of gene flow. In particular, two trophically specialized species exhibit much more restricted gene flow over sandy habitat than a trophically opportunistic species. This result suggests that ecological and behavioral traits have a strong influence on the scale and degree of population subdivision, a finding that has potentially important implications for understanding differential propensities for diversification among lineages and phylogenetic patterns of diversity.
