Solid-state synthesis of α-Fe and iron carbide nanoparticles by thermal treatment of amorphous Fe2O3

Elucidating the Active Site and the Role of Alkali Metals in Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of Phenols over Iron-Carbide-based Catalyst

Iron-carbide-based catalysts have been explored in the selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenol, aiming at elucidating the role of active site and alkali metal. Complementary characterization such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy, together with catalytic evaluations revealed a rapid structural reconstruction of iron carbide (Fe₃ C) catalysts, leading to a stable defective graphene-covered metallic Fe active phase (G@Fe) under reaction conditions. Further studies using different alkali metals (i. e., Na, K, and Cs) revealed that alkali metals showed negligible effect on the phase transformation of Fe₃ C. However, the reconstructed G@Fe doped with alkali metals inhibited the tautomerization, a facile reaction pathway to saturation of the aromatic ring, leading to enhanced selectivity to arene. The extent of inhibition of tautomerization or selectivity to arene was closely related to the degree of electron donation of alkali metal to Fe.

Anomalous dependence of particle size on supersaturation in the preparation of iron nanoparticles from iron pentacarbonyl

Iron nanoparticles were prepared by decomposing iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)(5)) at 170-220°C in the presence of amine surfactant and alkane solvent and under 1-12 bar carbon monoxide (CO) pressure. It was found that the amine not only acted as a stabilizer for the growing particles but also had a critical role as a promotor in the decomposition reaction. Relatively small changes in the CO pressure had anomalous effects on the particle size distribution. Typically, monodisperse particles were obtained at 1 bar, while pressures in the 2-6 bar range led to wider and even bimodal size distributions due to an emergence of smaller particles. At still higher pressures, the larger particle size disappeared leaving the distribution monodisperse again. The CO pressure, at which the bimodal transition took place, increased with the reaction temperature. Polycrystalline particles were formed at lower pressures and monocrystalline particles at higher pressures. This indicates that increased CO pressure inhibits aggregation.

A simple chemical route toward monodisperse iron carbide nanoparticles displaying tunable magnetic and unprecedented hyperthermia properties

We report a tunable organometallic synthesis of monodisperse iron carbide and core/shell iron/iron carbide nanoparticles displaying a high magnetization and good air-stability. This process based on the decomposition of Fe(CO)(5) on Fe(0) seeds allows the control of the amount of carbon diffused and therefore the tuning of nanoparticles magnetic anisotropy. This results in unprecedented hyperthermia properties at moderate magnetic fields, in the range of medical treatments.
