A synergistic approach of Vulcan carbon and CeO2 in their composite as an efficient oxygen reduction reaction catalyst

Design of S-Scheme CuInS2/CeO2 Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Pharmaceuticals in Wastewater

The release of common medications and illegal drugs into the environment could be potentially harmful to the ecosystem and hamper the behavior and growth of plants and animals. These pollutants gain access to water through sewage and factory discharges and have been found to exceed safety limits in water bodies. Therefore, there is an urgent need for improved wastewater purification systems. In this study, semiconductor-based heterojunction photocatalyst CuInS2/CeO2, synthesized through a facile solvothermal process, was explored for the photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin, commonly used antibiotics. Studies on the electronic properties of the heterojunction revealed interfacial characteristics that were suitable for enhanced charge carrier separation and transport and a potential S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. The heterojunction achieved ∼90% efficiency for the degradation of CIP compared to 60% and 12% reported for CeO2 and CuInS2, respectively. This shows an improvement in the activity, which results from the improved charge carrier properties of the heterojunction. Further investigation of the charge transfer mechanism through radical scavenging experiments identified •OH, O2•-, and h+ as active species contributing to the catalyst's efficacy. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, a proposed S-scheme charge transfer mechanism was suggested for the CuInS2/CeO2 heterojunction. The findings indicate the potential of the CuInS2/CeO2 heterojunction as a promising photocatalyst for treating waste effluents from the pharmaceutical industry.

Mixed Transition-Metal Oxides on Reduced Graphene Oxide as a Selective Catalyst for Alkaline Oxygen Reduction

The development of highly efficient, stable, and selective non-precious-metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline fuel cell applications is essential. A novel nanocomposite of zinc- and cerium-modified cobalt-manganese oxide on reduced graphene oxide mixed with Vulcan carbon (ZnCe-CMO/rGO-VC) was prepared. Physicochemical characterization reveals uniform distribution of nanoparticles strongly anchored on the carbon support resulting in a high specific surface area with abundant active sites. Electrochemical analyses demonstrate a high selectivity in the presence of ethanol compared to commercial Pt/C and excellent ORR activity and stability with a limiting current density of -3.07 mA cm^-2, onset and half-wave potentials of 0.91 and 0.83 V vs reversible hydrogen reference electrode (RHE), respectively, a high electron transfer number, and an outstanding stability of 91%. Such a catalyst could be an efficient and cost-effective alternative to modern noble-metal ORR catalysts in alkaline media.

Evaluating the Growth of Ceria-Modified N-Doped Carbon-Based Materials and Their Performance in the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Owning to their distinctive electronic structure, rare-earth-based catalysts exhibit good performance in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and can replace commercial Pt/C. In this study, CeO₂-modified N-doped C-based materials were synthesized using salt template and high-temperature calcination methods, and the synthesis conditions were optimized. The successful synthesis of CeO₂-CN-800 was confirmed through a series of characterization methods and electrochemical tests. The test results show that the material has the peak onset potential of 0.90 V and the half-wave potential of 0.84 V, and has good durability and methanol resistance. The material demonstrates good ORR catalytic performance and can be used in Zn-air batteries. Moreover, it is an excellent catalyst for new energy equipment.

Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity of Cobalt-Doped Ceria Embedded on Nitrogen, Sulfur-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide as an Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

N, S-doped rGO was successfully synthesized and embedded Co-doped CeO2 via hydrothermal synthesis. The crystal structure, surface morphology and elemental composition of the prepared catalyst were studied by XRD, Raman spectra, SEM, TEM and XPS analyses. The synthesized electrocatalyst exhibits high onset and halfwave potential during the ORR. This result shows that a combination of N- and S-doped rGO and Co-doped CeO2 leads to a synergistic effect in catalyzing the ORR in alkaline media. Co–CeO2/N, S–rGO displays enhanced ORR performance compared to bare CeO2. The superior stability of the prepared catalyst implies its potential applications beyond fuel cells and metal–air batteries.
