A Cross-Sectional Survey on Older Adults' Community Mobility in an Indian Metropolis

The health equity characteristics of research exploring the unmet community mobility needs of older adults: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Unmet community mobility needs of older adults, published since the announcement of the UN sustainable development goals was synthesised to describe the health equity characteristics of research identifying unmet community mobility needs of older adults.

METHODS

Searches were conducted in March and April 2020, 2275 articles were screened and 100 identified for data extraction.

RESULTS

Findings showed underrepresentation of articles considering rural settings [9%] and originating in the global South [14%]. Gender, disability, education, and transport / driving were identified as key health equity characteristics and only 10 articles provided detail on all four of these. External factors inhibiting community mobility included built environments, service availability, and societal attitudes. Internal factors included finances, fear and apprehension, and functional limitations.

CONCLUSIONS

The need for standardised reporting of participant characteristics in the community mobility of older adults was highlighted. These characteristics are required by research consumers to judge equity dimensions, and the extent to which findings represent minority or marginalised groups. 15 after the UN pledge to reduce inequalities, peer reviewed primary research does not reflect a global drive to end discrimination, exclusion and reduce the inequalities and vulnerabilities that leave people behind.

Perceived Neighborhood and Walking Among Older Brazilian Adults Living in Urban Areas: A National Study (ELSI-Brazil)

The study goal was to examine the association between perceived neighborhood characteristics and walking in urban older adults in Brazil. A cross-sectional study including 4,027 older adults from the baseline of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil) was performed. Walking was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Neighborhood characteristics were questions about physical disorder, noise pollution, safety, violence, social cohesion, services, concerns with community mobility, and pleasantness. Multinomial logistic regression was used. Concern about taking the bus, subway, or train was inversely associated with walking for men. Violence (victim of theft, robbery, or had home broken into) and social cohesion (trust in neighbors) were positively and inversely associated with walking for women, respectively. A significant interaction term between social cohesion and number of chronic diseases was observed for women. These findings demonstrate the need for sex-specific interventions and policies to increase the walking levels among older Brazilian adults.

Health conditions and weight change among the older adults over ten years of the SABE Survey

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the relationship between health conditions and weight changes among elderly people monitored by the SABE Survey over a ten-year period in São Paulo/SP.

METHODS

This was a longitudinal study that followed (2000-baseline, 2006 and 2010) change in body weight (outcome variable) and associated health conditions (exposure variables) in the elderly (n=571); multinomial logistic regression analyses were employed.

RESULTS

Average weight increase in the evaluated period was 29.0%. 34.0% (2006) and 12.5% (2010) lost weight and 18.2% (2006) and 39.9% (2010) gained weight. Prevalence of chronic diseases increased from 34.1% (2000) to 51.9% (2006) and 60.1% (2010). Older people with weight gain also rated their overall health as poorer in 2006 (RR:3.15; 95%CI 1.21;8.17) and 2010 (RR:2.46; 95%CI 1.02;5.94). The higher numbers of diseases (RR:2.12; 95%CI 1.00;4.46) and hospitalizations (RR:3.50; 95%CI 1.40;8.72) were associated with a decrease in weight in 2010.

CONCLUSION

Weight changes are related to poorer health status among the elderly.

Community mobility plans for individuals with developmental disabilities: A feasibility study

Introduction

Individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities have unmet transportation needs, which limits their community mobility. Access to transportation is linked to community participation and independence in adult outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine the implementation feasibility of individualized community mobility plans.

Methods

A pre-test post-test one group design was used to determine if methodology and implementation procedures were feasible. Outcome measures were evaluated to determine if appropriate for future effectiveness research. Participants were six adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities who received the community mobility plans intervention over a period of 3–8 sessions. Community mobility plans use a cyclical process where the individual first develops self-determined community mobility goals, followed by a comprehensive assessment process, and individualized environmental and person-centered travel interventions.

Results

Participants demonstrated significant improvement between pre- and post-test scores on the measures of the Progressive Evaluation of Travel Skills ( t(5) = –4.481, p = .007) and Goal Attainment Scaling ( t(5) = –7.457, p =.001).

Conclusion

Community mobility plans may provide a feasible option to improve community mobility for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, although further research is needed to determine effectiveness.

Indian elderly women's experiences of food procurement and preparation

The present study explored the experiences of Indian elderly women in meal preparation and food procurement. Ten elderly women aged 60-72 years residing in a metropolis were interviewed. Thematic analysis identified two overarching themes: "Meal preparation and food procurement are meaningful occupations" and "Meal preparation and food procurement change with age." The findings suggests that Indian elderly women valued their participation in these activities. They actively adopted alternative strategies and technologies to overcome the challenges experienced while performing these activities. The findings highlight the strong influence of family and financial aspects on the decisions of elderly women with regard to meal preparation and food procurement. The study findings provide salient information on personal and environmental factors that could guide interventions to promote and maintain Indian elderly women's participation in these meaningful occupations.

Cross-National Differences in Goals for Retirement: the Case of India and the United States

In the present investigation, a comparison is made between the retirement goals of working Indian adults and previously published data on the retirement goals of working adults in the United States. Participants were 158 Indian respondents between 21 and 60 years of age. Each respondent completed a questionnaire in which they reported the nature of the goals they held for retirement. For the most part, the types of the goals enumerated by workers from India were similar to those of Americans. However, Indians were found to focus more on financial stability and self-related goals, whereas Americans tended to focus on leisure and exploration activities. Moreover, Indian workers reported fewer retirement goals and their goals were less concrete than those reported by Americans. Findings are discussed in terms of the way culturally-based differences and similarities in retirement systems can impact some aspects of future goals (e.g., frequency; concreteness), but not other aspects of goal structures (e.g., goal content).
