Abstract
AIMS This population-based study aimed to investigate the impact of mental disorders on the risk of mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes in adults with new-onset type 1 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS We included 17,429 patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes without CVD from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Mental disorders include depression, bipolar, persistent affective and other affective disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, personality and behavioral disorders, and substance abuse. Individuals with or without mental disorders were matched 1:1 by age, sex, and year of the index date. The primary outcomes were all-cause mortality and composite CVD events. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 7.99 years, all-cause mortality (composite CVD outcomes) occurred in 1,562 patients (1,993 patients with CVD outcomes) with mental disorders and 1,211 patients (1,611 patients with CVD outcomes) without mental disorders. The adjusted HR for all-cause mortality and composite CVD outcomes in patients with mental disorders was 1.35 and 1.32, respectively, compared to those without mental disorders. The aHR for the all-cause mortality and composite CVD events was 1.27 and 1.28 in the subgroup with one mental disorder and 1.57 and 1.43 in the subgroup with multiple mental disorders, compared to those without mental disorders. CONCLUSIONS Mental disorders are associated with an elevated risk of all-cause mortality and CVD in adults with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes. Early detection and greater attention to premature death and CVD development are required in patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes and mental disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore the existing literature on the relationship between depressive symptoms and executive function in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) across the lifespan. METHODS The scoping review followed the PRISMA protocol by using three databases: PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO on May 14, 2023. Primary research that included reported executive function and the association with depressive symptoms was included in the review. RESULTS Of 1470 de-duplicated publications identified, nine articles were included in the review. Five studies evaluated the T1DM population, while four studies evaluated T1DM and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) as an aggregate result. Three studies indicated an association between depressive symptoms and executive function in adults with T1DM, and four studies indicated an association between depressive symptoms and executive function in adults with either T1DM or T2DM. In general, participants who reported depressive symptoms also exhibited poor executive function. However, two studies did not find an association between depressive symptoms and executive function. CONCLUSION In summary, the seven studies in this review suggest that individuals with T1DM who report depressive symptoms are at a higher risk of poor executive function; a clear association between depressive symptoms and executive function in individuals with T1DM remains inconclusive. There is a need to explore this relationship in the future.

Abstract
AIMS This study examined the psychosocial impact of Loop, an open-source automated insulin dosing system that has emerged from the diabetes technology "Do-It-Yourself" (DIY) movement. METHODS Subsamples of 239 adults, 115 children, and 243 parents completed data collection at the time of Loop initiation and 3 and 6 months later. Surveys collected demographic and clinical information, percent time-in-range, HbA1c, and validated psychosocial measures. Analyses included paired t tests and McNemar's tests to compare psychosocial functioning at 3 and 6 months and regression models to assess baseline predictors of psychosocial outcomes at 6 months. RESULTS Adults reported significant improvements in diabetes distress (t = -7.20 P < .001; t = -8.01, P < .001), sleep quality (t = 6.81, P < .001; t = 2.98, P = .003), fear of hypoglycemia (t = -4.42, P < .001; t = -4.97, P < .001), and hypoglycemia confidence (t = 8.68, P < .001; t = 7.96 P < .001) from baseline to 3 months and 6 months, respectively. Significant improvements in parents' and children's sleep quality and parents' fear of hypoglycemia were also observed. Several baseline characteristics were associated with psychosocial outcomes at 6 months. CONCLUSIONS The current findings support the broad and sustained benefits of Loop across multiple aspects of psychosocial well-being. Advancement and dissemination of such technologies has the potential to improve mental and physiological health among people living with type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Type 1 diabetes (T1D) causes psychological distress, negatively impacting normal childhood activities. Depression, anxiety disorders, and eating problems are commonly observed in this population. METHODS The study population consisted of 40 adolescents (22 females and 18 males) who had been diagnosed with T1D and 41 healthy adolescents (21 females and 20 males). The aim of this study was to compare adolescents with T1D to healthy controls in terms of depression, anxiety, and eating problems and subsequently examine the T1D group in relation to the risk of diabetes-specific eating disorders. Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40), Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), and Diabetes Eating Problem Survey - Revised (DEPS-R) scales were used to compare the case and control groups. RESULTS The case group exhibited significantly higher scores in EAT-40 total score, RCADS parent form major depressive disorder (MDD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), total anxiety score, total scale scores, RCADS child form MDD, PD, and total scale scores compared to the control group. Individuals at high risk of diabetes-specific eating disorder within the case group demonstrated significantly higher RCADS (child and parent form) MDD scores and RCADS parent form separation anxiety (SA) and total scale scores. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that the RCADS parent form total scale score could predict DEPS-R. CONCLUSIONS Routine screening of children and adolescents diagnosed with T1D for depression, anxiety, and eating disorder risk may facilitate early detection of possible psychopathologies, allowing for early intervention to address factors that may disrupt treatment adherence. Further longitudinal studies with larger samples are needed to investigate psychopathologies, particularly eating disorders, in children and adolescents with T1D.

Abstract
Studies on fear of hypoglycemia as a barrier to physical activity among youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have been limited and controversial, most of which used self-reported assessment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between fear of hypoglycemia and physical activity and glycemic metrics in children and adolescents with T1D. Seventy-four participants (6-18 years of age; 44.6% females) with T1D were included in the study. Physical activity was assessed through accelerometry on nine consecutive days, and blood glucose metrics were simultaneously tracked using continuous glucose monitoring (time-in-range and hypoglycemic events). A closed question was used to evaluate the avoidance of physical activity due to fear of hypoglycemia. Fifteen participants (20%) reported avoiding physical activity due to fear of hypoglycemia. The group reporting no fear of hypoglycemia showed lower total physical activity (-35.33 min/day, 95% confidence interval [CI] (-77.57 to -1.47)) and light physical activity (-29.81 min/day, 95% CI -64.01 to -2.75) and higher sedentary time (77.95 min/day, 95% CI 26.46-136.87) per day compared with those with fear of hypoglycemia. No difference was found between those patients with fear of hypoglycemia in terms of meeting the recommendations of glycated hemoglobin, glucose coefficient of variation, and time-in-range when compared to those with no fear of hypoglycemia. In conclusion, children and adolescents with fear of hypoglycemia were more active, less sedentary, and had similar glycemic metrics to those without fear. Our results therefore suggest that fear of hypoglycemia may be less of a barrier to an active lifestyle than previously believed.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Although advances in diabetes technology and pharmacology have significantly and positively impacted diabetes management and health outcomes for some, diabetes care remains burdensome and can be challenging to balance with other life priorities. The purpose of this article is to review the rationale for assessment of psychosocial domains in diabetes care settings and strategies for the implementation of psychosocial screening into routine practice. Survey data from the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange Quality Improvement Network is highlighted. RECENT FINDINGS Implementation of psychosocial screening requires identifying the population; selecting validated tools to assess target domains; determining frequency of screening and mode of survey delivery; and scoring, interpreting, documenting, and facilitating referrals such that these processes are part of clinical workflows. Recognizing the influence of psychosocial factors for people with diabetes (PWD), professional society guidelines for comprehensive diabetes care recommend the integration of psychosocial screening into routine care.

Abstract
METHODS The study was conducted by distributing the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC) to adolescents with T1D seen at Jordan University Hospital between February 2019 and February 2020. Demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic data were collected using electronic clinical charts. Possible predictors of depression were assessed using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 108 children were enrolled in the study with mean age of 13.7 ± 2.3 years. Fifty-eight children (53.7%) had a CES depression score less than 15, and 50 children (46.3%) had a depression score of 15 or more. The number of diabetes-related hospital admissions and the frequency of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) were significantly different between the two groups. In the multivariable analysis, both gender and SMBG frequency were statistically significant. Girls were more likely to have a depression score ≥ 15 (OR = 3.41, p = 0.025) than boys. Patients who were rarely testing blood glucose levels were more likely to have a depression score ≥ 15 compared to those who were testing regularly (OR = 36.57, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION The prevalence of depressive symptoms is relatively high in adolescents with T1D, especially in those living in developing countries. Longer diabetes duration, higher glycated hemoglobin level, and less frequent blood glucose monitoring are associated with higher depression scores.

Abstract
Objective To conduct a systematic review to examine associations between hypoglycemia and quality of life (QoL) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Methods Four databases (Medline, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO) were searched systematically in November 2019 and searches were updated in September 2021. Studies were eligible if they included children and/or adolescents with type 1 diabetes, reported on the association between hypoglycemia and QoL (or related outcomes), had a quantitative design, and were published in a peer-reviewed journal after 2000. A protocol was registered the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO; CRD42020154023). Studies were evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute’s critical appraisal tool. A narrative synthesis was conducted by outcome and hypoglycemia severity. Results In total, 27 studies met inclusion criteria. No hypoglycemia-specific measures of QoL were identified. Evidence for an association between SH and (domains) of generic and diabetes-specific QoL was too limited to draw conclusions, due to heterogenous definitions and operationalizations of hypoglycemia and outcomes across studies. SH was associated with greater worry about hypoglycemia, but was not clearly associated with diabetes distress, depression, anxiety, disordered eating or posttraumatic stress disorder. Although limited, some evidence suggests that more recent, more frequent, or more severe episodes of hypoglycemia may be associated with adverse outcomes and that the context in which hypoglycemia takes places might be important in relation to its impact. Conclusions There is insufficient evidence regarding the impact of hypoglycemia on QoL in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes at this stage. There is a need for further research to examine this relationship, ideally using hypoglycemia-specific QoL measures.

Abstract
Background Fear of hypoglycemia is a medical emergency which leads to disrupt individuals' normal lives. Peers support is a hopeful approach to improve diabetes self-care behaviors. This study was conducted to assess the effect of peers support on the fear of hypoglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes. Materials and Methods This randomized clinical trial study was performed among 60 patients with type 1 diabetes in Qazvin city from September 2019 to October 2020. Patients were assigned to control and intervention groups using a random method. The data collection tools included demographic characteristics and a standard questionnaire for Hypoglycemia Fear Survey (HFS). Patients in the intervention group were trained by skilled peers for 2 months, but those of the control group only received routine hospital training. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 16 and paired and independent t-test. Results The scores of the fear of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients in the two groups had no significant statistical difference before intervention (t53 = 0.93, p = 0.94). But after the intervention, the independent t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the scores of the fear of hypoglycemia in both groups (t53 = -2.13, p = 0.03). Conclusions Considering the results of the current study, peer support for diabetic patients is an effective way to reduce the fear of hypoglycemia. Therefore, it is recommended using this training method to train diabetic patients.
