Aggregation Pheromone of the Bearded Weevil, Rhinostomus barbirostris (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): Identification, Synthesis, Absolute Configuration and Bioactivity

The Influencing Factors of Aggregation Behavior of Tree-of-Heaven Trunk Weevil, Eucryptorrhynchus brandti (Harold) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

The tree-of-heaven trunk weevil, Eucryptorrhynchus brandti (Harold) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is one of the most harmful pests that damage the tree of heaven, Ailanthus altissima Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae). Aggregation behavior tests of E. brandti adults were conducted in laboratory conditions. The effects of temperature and light on the aggregation behavior of adults were tested, and the effect of sex and host was conducted with binomial choice experiments. The results showed that (1) the adults aggregate in both light and dark environments but preferred the dark environment, (2) temperature can drive the aggregation of E. brandti adults, (3) host plants could trigger E. brandti adults' aggregation behavior, which is probably related to phytochemicals and insect feeding and localization, (4) there was mutual attraction of males and females and chemical attraction of crude intestinal extracts of males and females, and (5) aggregation behavior of E. brandti adults may also be related to the mediating of physical signals in insects. In this study, aggregation behavior can help us understand conspecific interactions and discover some strategies for effective control.

Recent advances in the synthesis of insect pheromones: an overview from 2013 to 2022

Covering: 2013 to June 2022Pheromones are usually produced by insects in sub-microgram amounts, which prevents the elucidation of their structures by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Instead, a synthetic reference material is needed to confirm the structure of the natural compounds. In addition, the provision of synthetic pheromones enables large-scale field trials for the development of environmentally friendly pest management tools. Because of these potential applications in pest control, insect pheromones are attractive targets for the development of synthetic procedures and the synthesis of these intraspecific chemical messengers has been at the core of numerous research efforts in the field of pheromone chemistry. The present review is a quick reference guide for the syntheses of insect pheromones published from 2013 to mid-2022, listing the synthesized compounds and highlighting current methodologies in organic synthesis, such as carbon-carbon coupling reactions, organo-transition metal chemistry including ring-closing olefin metathesis, asymmetric epoxidations and dihydroxylations, and enzymatic reactions.

Aggregation Pheromones of Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): Advances in the Identification and Potential Uses in Semiochemical-Based Pest Management Strategies

With approximately 83,000 species described, Curculionidae is the largest family of beetles, comprising more than 80% of all weevil species worldwide. Many species of Curculionidae attack a wide range of native and orchards crops, as well as globally important stored products such as grains, flour, and seeds, being responsible for significant environmental and economic losses. This work provides an overview of the research in the identification of aggregation pheromones of Curculionidae, and their potential contributions to the development of semiochemical-based pest management strategies. The synergistic effect of the host plant volatiles in the attractiveness of weevil pheromones is also briefly reported, demonstrating the important role of these additional attractants in the chemical communication of curculionids.

Direct deposition GC/IR techniques in natural product identification

Covering: up to the end of 2019 The application of coupled gas chromatography/direct deposition Fourier transform infrared (GC/DD-FTIR) spectroscopy in the field of volatile natural product identification yields orthogonal information to GC/MS analysis about functional groups and C-C double bonds. This underused method facilitates structure elucidation of trace compounds and can be combined with modern DFT-calculation to further improve the usefulness of the obtained results.

Nonanal modulates oviposition preference in female Helicoverpa assulta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) via the activation of peripheral neurons

BACKGROUND

The insect olfactory system can recognize odorants for feeding, courtship, oviposition and avoiding natural enemies. Odorant cues from host plants play important roles in insect behaviours. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is the main cultivated host of the oriental tobacco budworm Helicoverpa assult. Volatiles of tobacco plants attract and stimulate oviposition in female moths. However, it is still not known how female H. assulta recognize tobacco volatiles and which odorant compounds are used as oviposition cues.

RESULTS

We detected 14 volatile compounds emitted from a tobacco plant during vegetative growth, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Electroantennogram tests indicated that eight of the 14 compounds induced responses in female H. assulta. Among these eight volatiles, nonanal greatly increased oviposition preference. Single-sensillum recording (SSR) results showed that many neurons housed in three types of short basiconic sensilla and four types of long basiconic sensilla responded to nonanal and heptanal as its structural analogue. The responses to nonanal were significantly stronger than those to the other compounds. Nonanal was the main ligand of OR67, an odorant receptor from H. assulta. This was demonstrated using an in vitro Xenopus oocytes expression system that supported the SSR results.

CONCLUSION

Semiochemicals for intraspecific communication of the fig weevil Aclees sp. cf. foveatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): a first survey

The fig tree weevil Aclees sp. cf. foveatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), introduced in Italy in 2005, is currently causing significant economic and environmental losses to fig tree nurseries and orchards in Central Italy. Fig damages are due to the adults feeding on leaves and fruits, and to the galleries dug by the xylophagous larvae in the trunk, which lead the plants to death. To date, no chemical or biological control methods resulted to be effective against this invasive pest. In order to gain information about possible semiochemicals involved in mate recognition and choice, both the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the epicuticular lipids of male and female specimens were analysed. VOCs emissions of specimens were characterized essentially by monoterpenes, while epicuticular lipids contained long chained 2-ketones, alkanes, alkenes, including some methyl alkenes, and several fatty acid propyl esters. The attractiveness of reconstituted VOCs blends of the two sexes was tested in electrophysiological and behavioural assays in laboratory conditions. Both the male and the female reconstituted VOCs drove a significant response towards individuals of the opposite sex, thus demonstrating features of sexual attractants. Our results suggest a possible application of VOCs blends as pheromonic attractants in field monitoring and mass trapping of Aclees sp. cf. foveatus.

Registros de Dryophthorinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) de la Costa Caribe colombiana

Dyophthorinae es una subfamilia con varias especies asociadas principalmente al consumo de monocotiledóneas, siendo consideradas en Colombia plaga en cultivos de palmas, musáceas y granos como maíz, trigo, sorgo y arroz. En este documento se presenta un listado de las especies de Dryophthorinae para los departamentos de la costa Caribe colombiana, construido a partir de las visitas a colecciones entomológicas y de la revisión de literatura. Para la región se registraron 11 especies: Cosmopolites sordidus, Dynamis borassi, Mesocordylus striatus, Metamasius hemipterus, M. hebetatus, Polytus mellerborgii, Rhynchophorus palmarum, Rhodobaenus sp., Rhinostomus barbirostris, Sitophilus zeamais y S. oryzae, algunas de las cuales se documentan por primera vez para esta zona. Se discute la importancia de realizar muestreos sistemáticos de este grupo y estudios tendientes a mejorar el conocimiento sobre su distribución y biología, así como su impacto en producciones agrícolas y su potencial como plagas en el país.
