Financial Literacy and Economic Attitudes as Protective Factors Against Pathological Gambling? A Systematic Review

Pathological gambling poses significant global issues, leading to economic, social, and psychological consequences such as debt, family breakdowns, and mental health problems. While various risk factors for gambling addiction, including comorbid addictions, psychiatric disorders, gender, age, and easy access to gambling venues, have been well-studied, less emphasis is placed on protective factors. Strong social support and higher education are key in mitigating gambling addiction. Higher education, in particular, equips individuals with better decision-making skills and risk management strategies, reducing the likelihood of addictive behaviors. Strengthening education and social support systems is essential for preventing gambling addiction. A systematic review was conducted across Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCO, focusing on studies published after 2000. Peer-reviewed studies written in English that examined the relationship between financial literacy and gambling were included. Studies focusing solely on financial topics or not in English were excluded. The review follows the PROSPERO protocol. Financial literacy is linked to lower rates of pathological gambling, although its impact varies based on cultural context and gambling accessibility. From 880 papers, 8 met the inclusion criteria. Six studies confirmed a relationship between higher financial literacy and reduced gambling behavior, while two studies indicated that the significance of this relationship depended on specific financial literacy dimensions or contextual factors. This research underscores the importance of incorporating consumer education and psychological factors into future gambling addiction prevention strategies, particularly for younger gamblers.

What is known about population level programs designed to address gambling-related harm: rapid review of the evidence

BACKGROUND

Gambling and gambling-related harm attract significant researcher and policy attention. The liberalisation of gambling in most western countries is strongly associated with a marked rise in gambling activity and increases in gambling-related harm experienced at the population level. Programs to address gambling-related harm have traditionally focused on individuals who demonstrate problematic gambling behaviour, despite clear evidence of the effectiveness of a public health approach to high-risk activities like gambling. Little is known about the availability or efficacy of programs to address gambling-related harm at a population level.

METHODS

The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation commissioned a rapid evidence review of the available evidence on programs designed to reduce gambling-related harm at a population level. The review was conducted using a public health and harm reduction lens. MEDLINE, ProQuest Central and PsychInfo databases were searched systematically. Included studies were published in English between 2017 - 2023 from all countries with gambling policy contexts and public health systems comparable to Australia's; included primary data; and focused on primary and/or secondary prevention of gambling-related harm or problems.

RESULTS

One hundred and sixty-seven articles were eligible for inclusion. Themes identified in the literature included: risk and protective factors; primary prevention; secondary prevention; tertiary prevention; target population group; and public health approach. The evidence review revealed a gap in empirical evidence around effective interventions to reduce gambling-related harm at the population level, particularly from a public health perspective.

CONCLUSIONS

Addressing gambling-related harm requires a nuanced, multi-layered approach that acknowledges the complex social, environmental, and commercial nature of gambling and associated harms. Moreover, evidence demonstrates community programs to reduce gambling-related harm are more successful in reducing harm when based on sound theory of co-design and address the social aspects that contribute to harm.

Gambling Harm Experienced by Children Exposed to Parental Gambling: An Online Survey of Australians

Although child wellbeing is known to be negatively affected by gambling, relatively little is known about the specific harms experienced by children exposed to parental gambling problems. The current study aimed to better understand gambling harm directly attributed to regular parental gambling in key areas of child wellbeing: financial, psychological, interpersonal wellbeing and intergenerational transmission of problem gambling. Using data from a national survey of Australian adults exposed to parental gambling under the age of 18 (n = 211), the results show that parental gambling was related significant levels of financial harm, abuse, neglect as well as relational and psychological problems as a direct result of parental gambling. The likelihood of experiencing gambling harms was positively associated with parental problem gambling severity. Harmful impacts of parental gambling as a child were also associated with a range of psychological problems in adulthood including depression, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and intimate partner violence victimisation. Parental problem gambling severity was negatively associated with own lifetime gambling problems, suggesting a specific pattern of intergenerational transmission of problem gambling in children of regular, or heavy, gamblers. This research highlights the need for more supports for families with children in which at least one parent gambles regularly.

The intergenerational transmission of gambling and other addictive behaviors: Implications of the mediating effects of cross-addiction frequency and problems

INTRODUCTION

This study examined the degree to which perceptions of familial and household participation in gambling and other addictive behaviors in youth was associated with frequency and problem severity of gambling, alcohol and/or drug use in participants as adults.

METHOD

The study measured perceived frequency of gambling, alcohol use, drug use and other potentially addictive behaviors in family/household members and the frequency and problem severity of gambling, alcohol, and drugs in an epidemiological sample of adults 18 and older (N = 3,499; m = 48.26 %, f = 51.74 %).

RESULTS

About 23.45 % of participants reported their father gambled when they were a child or adolescent, followed by mother (13.56 %), grandfather (9.73 %), or grandmother (7.83 %). A pathway model demonstrated cross-addiction inter- and intra-generational influences. Gambling by a father, mother or brother; substance use by a sister; and/or engagement in other behaviors by a brother, sister, grandmother or other household member was related to higher frequency of participant gambling (ps < 0.05), and, in turn, to higher levels of gambling, alcohol, and drug use problem severity (ps < 0.05).

DISCUSSION

Findings demonstrate the complex contributions of specific family and household members in the transmission of addictive behaviors. Frequency of gambling, alcohol use, and drug use mediated the relationship of perceived family behavior with and across addictions. In addition, perceptions regarding use of alcohol and/or other drugs, or engagement in other behaviors by family or household members was related not only to participants' alcohol and drug use but also to problem gambling frequency and severity.

How many children are exposed to at-risk parental gambling in Australia? Results from a representative national sample

Children of problem gamblers are at risk of harm, however, there are no population level estimates as to how many children are currently exposed to parental problem- and at-risk gambling. The current study analysed data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey, a nationally representative survey, to derive the first ever national estimates of the proportion of problem, moderate, and low risk gamblers (as measured by PGSI) in the Australian parent population. It also reports how many children under 15 years of age in Australia are exposed to parental gambling across the gambling risk categories. The results show that 13.7% of all Australian families with dependent children are currently exposed to some level of gambling risk due to parental gambling, and nearly 4% of families with children are exposed to parental moderate risk or problem gambling. This corresponds to almost 200,000 children each year. The results and approach of this study will guide future examination of child wellbeing in families where parents experience problems with gambling. The results are discussed in the context of public health approaches to familial gambling harm.
