Predictors of Heart Disease Knowledge Among Older and Younger Asian Indian Adults

Cardiovascular disease knowledge, risk factors, and resilience among US veterans with and without post-traumatic stress disorder

BACKGROUND

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of hospitalization and disability among the US veterans. Information about CVD knowledge and risk factors, and connection between psychological health and CVD among veterans transitioning from the military are limited.

PURPOSE

We examined the existing knowledge of CVD and its risk factors among the US veterans with and without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the relationship between knowledge, risk factors, resilience, and PTSD.

METHODS

A total of 104 veterans participated in our study by responding to the Primary Care PTSD Screen for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Heart Disease Fact Questionnaire (HDFQ) knowledge scale, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10. Data were extracted from the online Qualtrics survey software into SPSS (v. 25) for analysis.

RESULTS

Mean age was 52.3 years, mostly males (85.6%), married (72.1%), employed (54.8%), and with college education. Most were in the Navy or Air Force (72.1%) and served in a war (68.0%). Hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity were the most common CVD risk factors reported. Average CVD knowledge score was 85%. Marines scored higher on resilience than other branches of the military. Seventeen percent reported having PTSD. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 was significantly correlated with the HDFQ in the probable PTSD group (r = .589, p = .013).

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Our study provides information about the knowledge and risk factors of CVD among veterans and insights about interventions needed to improve CV health. Nurse practitioners should assess the CV and psychological health of veterans and screen for PTSD to provide appropriate care and referral.

Health Beliefs Regarding Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Risk Reduction in South Asian Immigrants: An Integrative Review

Introduction: The risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is higher in South Asians (SAs) than in other ethnic groups. The purpose of this review is to explore SAs' health beliefs regarding CVD risk and risk reduction behaviors including physical activity and healthy diet. Methodology: An integrative review was conducted to examine the peer-reviewed literature published before May 2017. Searches from PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL yielded 1 mixed-method, 4 quantitative, and 14 qualitative studies. Results: Stress, lack of exercise, and high-fat diet were perceived as causes of CVD in most studies. Lack of time, sociocultural norms, and insufficient guidance from health care providers were perceived barriers to CVD risk reduction. Exercise and healthy diet were perceived to be beneficial in a few studies. Cues to action included information from community leaders and health care providers. Discussion: Understanding the unique health beliefs of SAs regarding CVD is important in planning and delivering culturally competent preventive and educational services.

College Students' Knowledge Concerning Oropharyngeal Cancer, Human Papillomavirus, and Intent Toward Being Examined

The purpose of this study was to assess college students' knowledge of oral/oropharyngeal cancer and the relationship of human papillomavirus (HPV) to oropharyngeal cancer. Data were also collected to determine their perceived susceptibility to oropharyngeal cancer and awareness of emotions toward and intentions to receive an oral cancer examination in order to design tailored messages for promoting oropharyngeal cancer prevention on college campuses. Two hundred ten baccalaureate students in nonhealth majors from a public southeastern university were surveyed. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictors of knowledge of oral/oropharyngeal cancer and the HPV and intentions to be examined. Results indicated most were unaware of oropharyngeal cancer, did not understand the purpose of an oral cancer examination, and could not affirm they had received one or had one explained to them. Results also indicated poor understanding of some of the signs and risk factors of oropharyngeal cancer, especially HPV. In addition, oral/oropharyngeal cancer knowledge and negative emotions were predictors of examination intentions, confirming current behavioral theories that postulate rational decisions require collaboration from both cognitive and affective systems. Recommendations are offered for tailored educational communications and strategies about oropharyngeal cancer on college campuses.
