Health Literacy among Korean American Immigrant Women in the USA: Role of Social Support

Health literacy is associated with health behaviors and outcomes. Using Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use, this study examined the role of limited English proficiency (LEP) and social support for the health literacy of Korean American immigrant women, one of the most affected groups by LEP. Researchers surveyed 232 Korean American immigrant women in a metro area in a Southeastern state, U.S. Health literacy was measured by the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Questionnaire and the California Health Interview Survey. Participants with better English proficiency and larger social support had higher health literacy. LEP and social support interaction was significantly associated with health literacy, illustrating social support as a buffer that mitigates the negative impact of LEP on health literacy. Community programs that enhance social support through community health advocates or peer educators may increase health literacy and reduce health disparities among Korean American immigrant women with LEP.

COVID-19 Vaccine Acceptance Among Korean American Immigrants in the United States: A Qualitative Study

INTRODUCTION

Immigrant populations in the United States are at increased risk of reduced COVID-19 vaccine acceptance. Currently, no qualitative research focuses on COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among Korean American immigrants (KAIs). This phenomenological study aims to uncover needs, beliefs, and practices that may affect COVID-19 vaccine acceptance within this immigrant group.

METHOD

Twelve study participants answered 10 semi-structured interview questions. Inclusion criteria for participants are as follows: (a) above 18 years, (b) has immigrated from Korea, and (c) can understand and speak English. Interview data were analyzed using Colaizzi's data analysis method.

RESULTS

Eight themes emerged from the study. Themes included apprehension and indifference, disruption of normalcy, patterns of acceptance, duty to protect, fear of contagion, perceived self-efficacy, relief and safety, and acceptance of new normal.

DISCUSSION

Findings from this study can inform health care professionals of cultural factors related to COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and health promotion behaviors among the KAIs.

Barriers to Breast Cancer-Screening Adherence in Vulnerable Populations

Breast cancer screening through periodic mammography has been effective in decreasing mortality and reducing the impact of this disease. However, adherence to screening does not meet the desired expectations from all populations. The main objective of this review is to explore the barriers that affect adherence to breast cancer-screening programs in vulnerable populations according to race and/or ethnicity in order to propose measures to reduce the lack of adherence. We conducted a search of publications in the PubMed Central and Scopus databases. The eligible criteria for the articles were as follows: original quantitative studies appearing in SJR- and/or JCR-indexed journals from 2016 to 2021 in English or Spanish. Most of them present common barriers, such as race/ethnicity (47%), low socioeconomic (35.3%) and educational levels (29.4%), no family history of cancer and being single (29.4%), medical mistrust and a health information gap (23.5%), lack of private health insurance (17.6%) and not having annual health checks (17.6%). The target populations with the lowest adherence were Black, Asian, Hispanic and foreign women. Implementing awareness campaigns focused on these populations should be promoted, as well as working on diversity, cultural acceptance and respect with healthcare workers, in order to improve breast cancer-screening adherence worldwide.

Association of health checkups with health-related quality of life among public servants: a nationwide survey in Taiwan

BACKGROUND

Preventive health checkups have gained in importance over the last decade. The association of health checkups and the number of diseases with health-related quality of life (HRQoL), including physical and mental health, remains unclear. We sought to investigate the aforementioned association among Taiwanese public servants.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was conducted using randomized and multistage stratified cluster sampling based on proportional probabilistic sampling. The questionnaires addressed demographics, job characteristics, health behaviors, health status, 3 types of health checkups during the preceding 3 years (government-paid health checkup [GPHC], self-paid health checkup [SPHC], and no health checkup [NOHC]), and physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores of the Short-Form Health Survey. In total 11,454 middle-aged public servants were analyzed. A multivariate general linear model (GLM) was used to estimate PCS and MCS scores by using least square means.

RESULTS

Health checkup types were associated with a significant difference in PCS scores among the public servants. Scores of PCS and MCS were both significantly higher in the GPHC group than in the NOHC group for those with no chronic diseases (51.20 vs. 50.66 [P = 0.008] and 46.23 vs. 45.58 [P = 0.02], respectively). Compared with the NOHC group, both scores of GPHC and SPHC groups were significantly associated with higher PCS scores for public servants with ≥ 2 chronic diseases (46.93 vs. 45.13 [P = 0.002] and 46.52 vs. 45.13 [P = 0.009], respectively).

CONCLUSION

In Taiwan, public servants undergoing GPHCs are more likely to report higher PCS scores than are those undergoing SPHCs. It is crucial that encourage periodically using the health checkup to improve health status and HRQoL.
