Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-based circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been recognized as a promising pathway for developing chiroptical materials with high luminescence dissymmetry factors (|glum|). Here, we propose a method for the construction of a thermally tunable CPL-active system based on a supramolecular self-assembly approach that utilizes helical nano- or microfilament templates in conjunction with an AIE dye. The CPL properties of the ensuing ensembles are predominantly determined by the intrinsic geometric differences among the various filament templates such as their overall dimensions (width, height, and helical pitch) and the area fraction of the exposed aromatic segments or sublayers. The proposed mechanism is based on the collective data acquired by absorption, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence, absolute quantum yield, and CPL measurements. The highest |glum| value for the most promising dual-modulated helical nanofilament templates in the present series was further enhanced, reaching up to |glum| = 0.25 by confinement in the appropriate diameter of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) nanochannels. It is envisioned that this methodology will afford new insights into the design of temperature-rate indicators or anti-counterfeiting tags using a combination of structural color by the nano- and microfilament templates and the AIE property of the guest dye.

Flavanone-Based Fluorophores with Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement Characteristics for Mitochondria-Imaging and Zebrafish-Imaging. Molecules 2020; 25:molecules25143298. Abstract
Fluorophores with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics applied in bioimaging have attracted more and more attention in recent years. In this work, a series of flavanone compounds with AIEE characteristics was developed and applied to fluorescence imaging of mitochondria and zebrafish. The compounds were readily prepared by the thermal dehydration of chalcone that was obtained by the reaction of o-hydroxyacetophenone and benzaldehyde. Two of these compounds showed significant AIEE characteristics by fluorescence performance experiments, including optical spectra, fluorescence spectra, fluorescence quantum yield (φF), fluorescence lifetime, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compared with traditional organic fluorescent dyes, these compounds have high fluorescence emission and high fluorescence quantum yield in solid or aggregated state, which overcomes the shortcoming of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). More importantly, the two compounds exhibited low cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility in A549 lung cells at the experimental concentration range and they specifically targeted mitochondria, which make it of great potential use in mitochondria labeling. In addition, they were embryonic membrane permeable and had different affinities for different tissues and organs of zebrafish, but mainly distributed in the digestive system, providing a basis for the application of such compounds in bioimaging. These AIEE compounds with superior properties could be of great potential use in mitochondria imaging and other in vivo studies.

Abstract
An aggregation-induced emission chromophore, vinylpyrrole, was prepared from a formylpyrrole derivative, Meldrum's acid, and 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid. The optical properties of the chromophore both in the solution and solid states were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the dimethylbarbituric acid adduct formed a J-aggregate in the solid and resulted in higher fluorescence quantum yield compared to the Meldrum's acid adduct. Emission enhancement was found to occur by the restriction of molecular rotation in the solid state. A cyclic ester and a cyclic amide functionalized monopyrroles show aggregation-induced emission (AIE) by the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) mechanism.![]()

Abstract
"United we stand, divided we fall."--Aesop. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical phenomenon shown by a group of luminogenic materials that are non-emissive when they are dissolved in good solvents as molecules but become highly luminescent when they are clustered in poor solvents or solid state as aggregates. In this Review we summarize the recent progresses made in the area of AIE research. We conduct mechanistic analyses of the AIE processes, unify the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) as the main cause for the AIE effects, and derive RIM-based molecular engineering strategies for the design of new AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Typical examples of the newly developed AIEgens and their high-tech applications as optoelectronic materials, chemical sensors and biomedical probes are presented and discussed.
